One of the many Fletcher-class destroyers built by the US and later transferred to other nations, Tier IX premium destroyer Velos takes her place as the first Greek ship in the game. Although serving in the European tech tree, she is much closer to her American cousins than her European counterparts.

Velos carries four 127mm guns in four single turrets, two forward and two aft of the superstructure. Both her guns and shells are identical to those found on other Fletcher-class destroyers. She shares Fletcher’s floaty shells and long flight times, which allow her to farm targets from behind most island cover, but hitting agile targets at range is more difficult.

Her 12.1km main battery range is slightly below average for the tier, the same as Chung Mu but less than Fletcher and Black. Although she has less range, she retains the fastest-in-tier traverse, able to rotate her turrets 180 degrees in just 5.3 seconds. Her main battery reload is also impressive at 2.5 seconds stock, faster than Fletcher and one of the fastest at Tier IX. Although she has one less turret, that shorter reload gives her a higher sustained DPM than her American cousins. However, dedicated gunboats like Friesland and Kitakaze have even greater DPM. She can outgun most lower tier destroyers and many same tier torpedo destroyers, but she’ll need help to engage Tier X gunboats and destroyer hunters.

In addition to her main battery, Velos mounts one quintuple torpedo rack, with the same Mk 16 torpedoes found on Fletcher. Although their 10.5km range and 66 knot top speed are average for Tier IX, her 19,033 damage per torpedo is high for the tier, as is her flood chance. Like the other European destroyers, she has a choice between narrow and super narrow spreads, rather than the narrow and wide of most destroyers.

At only 60 seconds base, she has the fastest torpedo reload in her tier and the second fastest in her entire matchmaking spread. However, her single rack leaves her average torpedo DPM below average for Tier IX. And with only one rack, a single unlucky HE hit can permanently remove her torpedo threat. Combined with her narrower spread, that single rack leaves more to chance when launching torpedoes. If aimed well, most of them will likely hit their target. But when aimed poorly, there’s no wide spread or extra racks to saturate an area and ensure at least a couple hits.

Velos's ASW defenses are identical to Fletcher’s. She carries two sets of depth charges, which reload in 40 seconds each. Each set drops 12 depth charges that deal up to 5100 damage per charge.

Velos carries a similar consumable suite to most high tier American destroyers — Damage Control PartyWhen activated, instantly repairs fires, floods, and incapacitations, and prevents more for the duration., Smoke GeneratorWhile active, generates a smoke screen that blocks line-of-sight for both enemies and teammates., Engine BoostWhile active, increases a ship's speed by a fixed percentage., and Defensive AA FireWhile active, the damage per second of large caliber anti-aircraft guns is increased..

Unlike her American cousins, her Engine Boost and Defensive AA Fire consumables are in separate slots, allowing her to increase her AA defenses without sacrificing agility. However, she uses the “normal” Defensive AA Fire consumable, rather than the improved version on American destroyers with an extra charge and increased continuous DPS.

Velos also uses the characteristic American Smoke Generator consumable, with an increased action time (30 seconds vs 20) and substantially longer dispersion time.

Velos is both fast and agile. Her 38 knot top speed is high for her tier and matchmaking range, although the French, Russian, and Italian speedboats will still outpace her. With her Engine Boost active and the Sierra Mike signal mounted, she can reach 43 knots. Her 3.9 second rudder shift and 620mm turning circle are also impressive for the tier and her matchmaking range. She’s not the fastest or most agile destroyer in her battle, but she can still move around the map with ease.

Compared to Fletcher, she features a higher top speed but slower rudder shift and worse turning circle.

Like Fletcher, Velos is not particularly durable. Her 17,100 HP is noticeably low for Tier IX, and she doesn’t get a Repair Party like Östergötland to make up for her small health pool. Even against lower tier opponents, many enemy destroyers will have similar or larger health pools, and even the squishiest Tier X destroyer can survive longer than Velos.

She also lacks anything resembling armor. Her 19mm plating and 13mm superstructure are completely normal for a Tier IX destroyer, leaving her with little defense against incoming fire. Due to her small size, large caliber AP is likely to overpenetrate, passing through her and out the other side before detonating if it even fuses at all. But any HE shell will easily penetrate and deal damage.

Her excellent surface concealment helps keep her alive and avoid taking damage. Able to get as low as 5.76km with Concealment Expert and the slot 5 concealment module, she is one of the stealthiest destroyers at Tier IX and in her entire matchmaking range. Only a handful of enemy destroyers will be able to outspot her.

Velos's survivability is nearly identical to Fletcher’s when fully upgraded. Their health and armor are exactly the same, but Velos has slightly better surface concealment at the expense of slightly worse air and periscope detection.

Unlike her American cousins and European counterparts, Velos's AA defenses are average. Her long range defenses and flak are both underwhelming. Most of her defenses lie in her mid range mounts, which have a longer reach than most destroyers and deal more damage. However, her Friesland, Groningen, and Östergötland put out more damage at all ranges. She has no short-range defenses, unlike her American cousins.

Velos mounts the Defensive AA Fire consumable in its own slot, which increases her continuous and flak damage. Unlike her American cousins, she uses the standard version of the consumable, which lacks the extra continuous damage boost and additional charge.

She isn’t as much of a threat to enemy planes as most high tier American or European destroyers, even with Defensive AA Fire active. But she can still deter attacks long enough to disengage or seek assistance from allies.

Battle performance

Players familiar with high tier American destroyers should feel right at home in Velos. Despite her European flag and Greek name, she is very much an American destroyer and shares their hybrid play style. Neither her guns nor her torpedoes are good enough to just use one or the other, but together they’re a dangerous combination.

With her high top speed, she can quickly reach a cap at the start of the battle or reposition as the battle develops. Her excellent concealment and high DPM allow her to fight over caps and kill or weaken her destroyer opponent, although she lacks the Hydroacoustic Search of dedicated cap contesters, and will need help if a real gunboat shows up on the other side. When not fighting over a cap, she can provide spotting for her team and send a steady stream of torpedoes toward chokepoints and stationary battleships.

She’s not the best ship in the battle at any one thing, but she’s good enough at all of them to contribute and carry her own weight. When she can make use of all her offensive and defensive capabilities, she’s still a formidable opponent.

  • High main battery DPM
  • Fast turret traverse
  • Very fast torpedo reload
  • High top speed, with excellent agility
  • Excellent concealment
  • Smoke Generator consumable with increased action and dispersion times
  • Defensive AA Fire and Engine Boost consumables in separate slots

  • Low health
  • Floaty shells and long flight times
  • Only four main turrets
  • Only one torpedo rack
  • Weaker AA defenses
  • Does not use the improved “American” Defensive AA Fire consumable

As a premium ship, Velos has no module upgrades to research.

Optimal Configuration

Although sailing under the European flag, Velos is very much an American destroyer. As such, her optimal configuration is closer to Fletcher than her “national” counterparts. Like other high tier American destroyers, she can build for guns or torpedoes alone, but works best as a hybrid of the two.

The recommended upgrades are:

Commander Skills

Unique commander Jerzy Ṡwirski is a particularly good fit for Velos. In addition to his improved Adrenaline Rush skill that’s useful on any ship, Velos can easily activate both of his special talents — Torpedo Armament Expert, which reduces her torpedo reload by 5% for every eight torpedo hits, and AA Gun Expert, which increases her continuous AA damage by 10% after shooting down 20 planes.

Velos equips the following consumables:

Players should note that Velos uses the "American" Smoke Generator consumable, with increased action and dispersion times. Her Defensive AA Fire consumable is normal, rather than the improved version on American destroyers with an extra charge and increased continuous DPS.

As a premium ship, Velos comes with Default permanent camouflage and a set of permanent combat bonuses.

Note: Use of the Juliet Charlie signal makes detonation impossible.
