Performance
A challenging light tank to play, the GSOR shares the terrible DPM and small size of the other tanks in its tech tree. However, unlike previous tanks in the line, the GSOR can actually pull out some other advantages.
For one, it’s extremely mobile. The GSOR has an excellent P/W ratio and a decent top speed, allowing it to zip around the battlefield very effectively. The small size of the tank also helps with avoiding enemy fire, and gives the tank an excellent camouflage rating, something that should be abused at much as possible. Whilst the view range is average at best, the camouflage rating at least gives you some leeway with regards to counter spotting other light tanks, and makes you extremely dangerous if you are the only light tank still alive. During the endgame, the GSOR can be a very serious threat, as very few tanks will be capable of counter spotting it thanks to its camo rating. This tank shines near the end of the battle, where it can easily pick off wounded tanks and evade being spotted.
The gun may not be the best gun at Tier IX, but it can prove capable nonetheless. The standard penetration is excellent like the previous tanks in the line, and means even at range the gun is still effective, even against heavy tanks. 232 is enough to contest frontal weak points on most equal tier heavies, and is easily enough to punch through side armour. Whilst the DPM is poor, you can still take shots and deal effective damage, and act as a harasser from unexpected angles. Your alpha damage is high enough that many tanks won’t want to ignore you for long, and your small size makes it much more difficult for enemy tanks fighting back. The gun handling is also excellent, so quickly reacting to where you need to put in shots is easy and fluid.
The main drawback to the GSOR is its lack of DPM. Any other tank, except maybe for other British light tanks, will be able to kill you much faster than you can eliminate them. The T49 with the 90mm gun has nearly 1000 more DPM than you do! If you are being charged down, your best option is to run unless you can take them out with one or two shots. The rate of fire simply isn’t enough to fight back. Your alpha damage is better than previous tiers, but 240 is still nothing impressive at this tier, so trading is also not favourable. Stay back, chip away targets at range, use the excellent penetration to make every shot count, as you don’t have many. Try and stay alive until the end of the game, where this tank can truly shine with its camouflage value. Then, picking off targets should be much easier to do, especially without being seen.
This tank is not for beginners. The low DPM will get you killed if you play it like a traditional light tank. But conserve your health, chip away at enemies, and finally swoop in for the kill on wounded tanks, and the GSOR can prove very rewarding.
