The M15/42 is an Italian tier 3 medium tank.
Italian medium tank produced from the beginning of 1943. After the surrender of Italy, a total of 90 vehicles were manufactured; some of which were confiscated by the Germans. Later they built another 28 vehicles. The tank was used by the Germans against the partisans in Yugoslavia, as well as in the Leonessa and Leoncello Battalions of the Armed Forces of the Italian Social Republic.
The M15/42 leads to the P26/40.

Player Opinion
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Very good top gun -- excellent pen on both AP and HE rounds, above-average DPM, and 10 degrees of gun depression
- Huge ammunition capacity -- 195 rounds total
- Good protection for its tier. With proper angling it fends off auto-cannons and many small-caliber guns easily
Cons:
- Special ammunition is HEAT, unusual for a small caliber gun and takes time to adapt to
- Gun traverse speed is a little on the low side but not too bad
- Aim time is slower than the rate of fire
- No dedicated gunner crew position -- the commander must provide any desired gunner skills
- Below average view range (but misses the average by only six meters)
- Subpar signal range (but not by much -- only 5% below average)
Performance
The M15/42 is in that unique category of mini-derps that make up the Italian medium line from Tiers III to V. The 42's top gun has available an HE shell with 45mm of penetration -- best in tier for mediums, if not all Tier III's period -- and are excellent for tearing apart enemies except for heavily-armored foes such as Valentines and Matildas. The AP shell is also excellent with 70mm of pen; some experience with the gun will tell you which of these are better for which tanks. Tougher opponents -- even Tier IV's -- can still be hurt and killed with HEAT rounds (95mm pen).
(HE rounds have been horribly nerfed but at Tier III these can still be viable. They're quite slow -- only 400mps -- so use them at short to medium ranges and/or when a target is stationary. AP and HEAT rounds are good for sniping. You might simply consider making your ammo loadout 65 of each shell type.)
Aim time is slower than the gun's reload time so an Enhanced Gun Laying Drive (Class 3) should be considered to increase effective DPM at medium to long ranges. (But you can't go wrong with Improved Ventilation, and in either case a Binocular Telescope is recommended.)
Concealment is second best amongst mediums; only the T3 Convertible is more stealthy. Players may wish to train up a full-camo crew.
Armor protection isn't the best but quite decent for a medium: hull armor is second best, turret armor third best -- good enough to defend against autocannons and otherwise get a few bounces with proper hull angling. This all counts for frontal armor only; side and rear protection is mediocre.
Mobility is average and good enough to get you into the fight or get you out of trouble to take cover.
Unfortunately the M15/42 doesn't have any premium Italian mediums which can serve as a crew trainer.
Overall a fun tank to play; definitely worth at least giving a try.
Early Research
- First, research the Cannone da 47/40 gun to increase damage.
- Next, research the M15/42 mod. 43 suspension as the stock suspension has reached its weight limit.
- Research the SPA 19TB mod. 43 engine for minor improvement in mobility.
- Research the M15/42 modificata turret next.
- Lastly, research the R.F. 2 C.A. radio.
