The BT-5 is a Soviet tier 3 light tank.
A mass-produced tank in the BT vehicle series that was developed as an upgraded version of the BT-2 with improved gun armament, a Soviet engine, and slightly increased vehicle height and weight. The BT-5 was one of the Red Army's main tanks before the war. Vehicles of this modification were engaged in the Spanish Civil War as well as the Battle of Khalkhyn Gol, the Polish Campaign, the Winter War, and World War II. A total of 1,884 vehicles were manufactured.
The BT-5 has very good mobility and firepower but suffers from poor protection, making it a sniper, but a good one at that.

Player Opinion
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Very good penetration (12th-best in class out of 33) and rate of fire on the top gun
- Excellent concealment
- Quite a low profile
- Relatively fast and maneuverable
Cons:
- Weak armor
- Long hull makes you a big target and makes it harder to use cover
Performance
The BT-5 can do well if played correctly. The lack of armor makes it particularly susceptible to autocannons so don't try and duke it out with Pz. Ic's. Its speed means that it can get to strategic locations (for instance the hill on Mines) and stay out of trouble. Its small turret makes it a small hull-down target.
The combination of a very good main gun, poor armor, and impressive concealment makes sniping the preferred tactic for the BT-5; avoid brawling if at all possible.
The BT-5's crew layout -- Commander (Radio Operator), Gunner (Loader), Driver -- makes it crew-compatible with the BT-7 Artillery, LT-432, and Tetrarch, all three premium Soviet lights can accommodate the BT-5's crew without penalty, making them good crew trainers.
Early Research
The BT-5 has an interesting research path. The stock suspension is stout enough to let you do anything you like -- both module and equipment-wise -- short of mounting the top engine, and only then is the top suspension required. (Of course one can get Improved Hardening, then even the top engine becomes available.)
Make a beeline for the Tier IV top gun -- the 45mm 21-KMT -- to gain very good firepower, get the top radio for much-improved signal range, pick up the top engine for better acceleration and a lower fire chance, and finish off with the top suspension if you haven't acquired it already.
Now research the T-28 and BT-7 to elite the tank, and don't forget to turn on Accelerate Crew Training.
Documented Tank and Crew Builds
As a Tier III sniper the BT-5 really needs a Binocular Telescope in case it needs to spot targets for itself. The other equipment slot should have Improved Ventilation to bolster its sniper capabilities -- namely view range, accuracy, and concealment -- but a case could be made for Low-Noise Exhaust or even a Camouflage Net, depending on play style (the former favored due to the tank's excellent mobility.)
