The Object 780 is a Soviet tier 10 premium heavy tank.
Developed in the first half of the 1960s, this tank represented a modification of the Object 775 rocket tank prototype. The tank was to have been provided with a 125 mm rifled gun/launching device that could fire both standard shells and rockets. Another unique feature of the tank's design was the placement of the driver in the center of the turret in an immobile cabin that would remain stationary during turret rotation. Existed in blueprints. Some full-size prototypes were manufactured.

Player Opinion
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Very good alpha (530) for a 130mm gun, tied with only one tank, the E100.
- Good aim time for a 130, good standard penetration
- Strong and highly sloped turret with only one cupola that is reliably penetrated (the middle one)
- Decent mobility at 45km/hr stock
- Very small and angled lower plate that can bounce a surprising amount of rounds
Cons:
- The middle cupola is very thin and easy to penetrate, and is somewhat easy to hit at close range
- While small, the lower plate is easily penetrated by premium rounds
- Sidescraping is very unreliable due to large side "cheeks"
- Reload is on the longer side to balance out alpha increase over other 130mm heavies
- Low ammunition capacity of 33 rounds
Performance
The Object 780 is one of the newer Soviet tanks, and certainly one of the more unique ones. The main thing that comes to mind is the absence of a driver in the hull. In fact, this tank is very unique being the only HT with all crewmembers located in the turret. The gun on the 708 is also an oddity among its 130mm peers, having 530 alpha instead of the typical 490. This does not come with severe drawbacks, for the AP rounds come with 267 penetration, which one of the highest standard penetration values of all HTs. The 130mm gun also has very good aim time and shell velocity (1130m/s AP or 1480m/s with APCR) for such a caliber, and good dispersion to boot, which makes even ranged shots enjoyable.
The turret is very thickly armored, it being a typical Soviet turret. However, there is a cupola atop the turret that one should be mindful of when peeking, as it can be penetrated by every standard shell at tier 10 and even most from tier 9. The turret, while thickly armored, also has a long profile, making engaging multiple opponents a very dangerous proposition. The hull is quite good, and can deflect many shells even if not angled, but do not count on it to protect you. While the lower plate is small and hard to penetrate with standard rounds, premium shells can easily deal with this. Angling is a must when in close proximity. While sidescraping comes into mind, this is also an risky idea, since doing so exposes long and weak side "cheeks". These can be penetrated in close quarters, and which not as troublesome as other tanks, the ammorack lies behind these "cheeks". Reverse sidescraping is also not an option, as the hull features a "bulge" to accommodate for the big turret ring. This is very thin, and exposing this spot is equivalent to giving one's self easy ticket to the garage. It is best to poke out in a way that angles the front and hides the cheek closest to your gun to maximize the armor profile.
Mobility-wise, the Object 780 has a decent top speed. It is capable of reaching 45km/hr thanks to its decent P/W ratio, which is much better than its superheavy contemporaries. This speed is enough to get to positions faster than most other heavies, excluding "fast heavies" such as 277s and 5As. The mobility is good enough to rotate between hotspots and perform one's duties adequately. Do note that while this tank is a frontline assault vehicle, it is a good idea to have allies, as your long reload and lack of spaced armor can easily lead to doom where other heavies would survive. It is a good idea to use your superior speed to catch key positions and put out early shots or roll with mediums to lend some heavy firepower. A final thing to note is that the fuel tanks are very large and frontally located, meaning that modified configuration and/or automatic fire extinguisher is mandatory, unless one wants to run the risk of fires.
Overall, the Object 780 is a balanced, albeit unique machine. The surprising gun characteristics can lend great enjoyment, however, the numerous weakspots ensure that one must carefully position themselves. When commanded by a player who keeps in mind its strengths and weakness, the Object 780 is a versatile vehicle that will reward its user quite graciously.
Early Research
Since the Object 780 is labeled as a reward/elite tank, there is no research that is required. This tank however, required participation in the Assembly shop event, where one could spend credits, gold, free xp, and/or bonds to "build" the tank. The tank itself cost 800,000 free xp or 40,000 bonds. In the event, one could combine different resources (e.g. free xp, blueprints, bonds, credits, gold), however, this tank is still very costly to produce. The vehicle will most likely not re-appear anytime soon due to WG's fashion of releasing a new Assembly shop vehicle every new "season".
