Specifically, the mismatch in crew values caused by commander's 10% crew skill bonus. Outside of a crew of 1 commander only, 100% crew is a fiction. The client values, given for 100% crew, will normally be taken into battle with 110% crew skill members aside from specific functions, causing their actual performance to deviate from the expected client value. These differences are taken into account in tooltip boxes.

The Type 58 is a Chinese tier 6 medium tank.

The U.S.S.R. exported a total of 1,800 T-34-76 and T-34-85 tanks to China. In 1954 the Chinese government made the decision to begin domestic production of the T-34-85 in 1958, with the new vehicle designated the Type 58. However, production was never initiated, and the Chinese army settled for modifications to the Soviet-made T-34s.

A Chinese-modified T-34-85, it shares similarities with its predecessor where a high Rate of Fire has a quality all of its own. Previously underwhelming even in top configuration, it has received a penetration and HP buff to become more competitive, especially when bottom tier. Many characteristics were copied from T-34-85 and it still remains a capable opponent in tier 6 matches.

The Type 58 leads to the IS-2, and the T-34-1.

Player Opinion

Pros and Cons

Pros:

-See T-34-85 for more detail; only differences are listed here

  • 10% higher base HP pool
  • High RoF with about 2100 DPM, to compensate for lower alpha damage
  • Better aim time and handling on top gun which compensate for RoF, but no change to full accuracy
  • Higher view range

Cons:

  • 20% weaker engines than the T-34-85, even if tempered with lower terrain resistances on the Type 58. Struggles to hold its sp
  • Shell velocity, alpha damage, APCR premium round are inferior to T-34-85 counterpart but still competitive
  • Worse armor layout prone to taking damage, including gun depression reduction of -2°, less reliable gun mantlet, an extra cup

Performance

After the buffs received in 1.18 the tank has become more capable, including more HP to put it in the average for its tier, and higher penetration on its top gun. These qualities allow it to take advantage of Rate of Fire, much like its excellent Tier 5 cousin. However, the Type 58 still has a low power to weight ratio for its tier and no particular survivability advantages from its armor, gun depression, or concealment.

Leverage the tank's high DPM to get the upper hand when cleaning up the battlefield and dueling one-on-one with other tier 6 medium tanks. For every two shots exchanged with the enemy, take an extra third shot. Because of its vulnerabilities, try not to engage full teams of enemies that can all shoot back at once, and be prepared to spend extra time to have good matches (even up to the whole 15 minutes), compared to tanks that can immediately use their armor or speed to get into the action. It is also advised to situationally stay away from hills, where the poor engine power, gun depression, and lower shell velocity would become disadvantages. Finally, to cover the Type 58's weaknesses in fights, avoid brawling with heavies where their alpha and HP would dominate. The chassis has poor accuracy on the move for peeking, and the risk of taking alpha shots head-on from 122mm and 90mm guns would be dangerous, so instead try to catch lone survivors from the sides, even retreating to a better spot and giving up ground if required.

For equipment and other setup notes, Improved Rotation can be a huge benefit for snap shots, as well as allowing the player to turn around and change their positioning as necessary. Turbocharger can be used in the bonus mobility slot with good map knowledge for positioning; for versatility if this is not the case, Ventilation can be used instead and still get the slot bonus. The 85mm gun benefits more from Improved Aiming for max accuracy and snapshot, rather than the tier 5's Gun Laying drive. Smooth Ride can be useful although it is a small bonus.

Early Research

The Type 58 in its stock configuration performs largely the same as its fully upgraded configuration, except for the gun. The 85mm S-53 is an adequate gun in most regards, but is inaccurate and has a tendency to shoot into the corners of the reticule. The 85 mm 56-85JT upgrade has the potential for higher penetration and accuracy, and so is the most useful upgrade. (It lets the player take cautious shots at armored tanks at range, while the player waits for other tanks to clear out of the battlefield.) Apart from that, there is really no way to go wrong here.

  • First research the tracks to make the most of your maneuverability (by fixing dispersion and terrain resistance) and allow room to mount equipment. It is possible to skip this with the inexpensive Improved Hardening Class 3.
  • The turret and gun come next, giving much-needed penetration and gun handling boosts, plus extra HP.
  • The radio will allow you to properly fulfill your role as a flanker, so research that next.
  • The middle engine adds no HP and only reduces the likelihood of fire, while the top engine adds an underwhelming 20 hp. However, the top engine is also the top engine on T-34-1, and researching the engines on the Type 58 circumvents the need to use the even more inadequate stock engine on the T-34-1.

The Type 58 leads to both the Chinese medium and heavy lines. Unlocking the IS-2 includes unlocking the top gun on the T-34-1. In terms of shared modules, there are the 85mm 56-85JT gun and the 12150L engine. If you are going up the Chinese medium tank line gun is required for researching and mounting the next 2 tanks' top turrets and also guns, which is recommended. Trying to use the stock gun at an even higher tier may be painful. The engine is required for the BZ-58 and shared between the other Tier 7s being the top engine for the T-34-1. However, it is a minor increase in power and a hefty chunk of XP for tier 6. If it is possible to wait, it may be more ideal to grind this engine on the more powerful T-34-1.

However, mass production was never initiated, and the Chinese army settled for modifications to the T-34s. Limited number of domestically made Type 58 tanks were produced, although it is not clear in what percentage were those tanks Chinese made, as they shared a lot of spare parts with Soviet made T-34 tanks, which were available at a very low price and in large numbers. At the time of the production, Type 58 was completely obsolete.
