?1. Write a brief intro paragraph of 1-3 sentences.+Like most Tier III cruisers, ''{{#var:ship_name}}'' is not the quickest ship, with top a speed of 25 knots. ''{{#var:ship_name}}'' does however have a quick rudder shift time of 6.6 seconds, which allows captains to quickly "wiggle" themselves out of the way of incoming shells, or into a better angle in hopes of bouncing or ricocheting Armor Piercing shells.
?2. Write 1-3 paragraphs of "meat". Talk about what the ship does well, what it doesn't, how it compares to same tier ships of the same type, how it compares to the previous ship in the tech tree, whatever. Try to avoid quoting vital statistics to players unless it is really relevant (i.e. concealment); they can see those in the sidebar on the right and don't need them read back. +
?3. Write a brief summary paragraph of 1-3 sentences highlighting the key takeaways from the paragraphs above.+''{{#var:ship_name}}'' was historically a "protected cruiser"; in-game her armor is decent, but again, like most Tier III cruisers, is nothing to write home about. It will be sufficient against cruiser and destroyer Armor Piercing ammunition when angled, but will be next to useless against battleship AP. Captains should not be relying on her armor to save them; her mobility and ability to strategically place herself are better options.

+Her guns are of a large caliber (152 mm), and have the characteristics to match; slow reload, high damage, high shell arc, and good penetration. Both her High Explosive and Armor Piercing ammunition is usable, and captains are encouraged to switch ammo types as the situation changes. Her high shells arcs make hitting targets at range challenging, but also allow for strategic positioning of the ship behind low-lying islands. Her large number of guns on either side allow her to easily switch between targets without having to wait too long for the guns to traverse.
 +
+Despite having generally worse statistics than her three Tier III Russian cruiser counterparts, ''{{#var:ship_name}}'' remains an "OK" ship. There is nothing spectacularly good or bad about her, and can serve her captain well when played to her strengths.

Special

Varyag — Soviet special premium Tier III cruiser.

One of the most famous cruisers in the Imperial Russian Navy. Built in the U.S. under a one-off project that was based on the same technical design used for the construction of cruiser Bogatyr. The ship had a very high speed for her time and carried numerous rapid-fire main and secondary guns.

Performance

Varyag is one of a multitude of premium Russian cruisers in World of Warships, and the third at Tier III (the others being Oleg and Aurora). Varyag possesses similar characteristics to the two other premium Tier III's, which in turn are very similar to the tech tree Tier III, the Bogatyr. As such, Varyag shares a similar play style.

Like most Tier III cruisers, Varyag is not the quickest ship, with top a speed of 25 knots. Varyag does however have a quick rudder shift time of 6.6 seconds, which allows captains to quickly "wiggle" themselves out of the way of incoming shells, or into a better angle in hopes of bouncing or ricocheting Armor Piercing shells.

Varyag was historically a "protected cruiser"; in-game her armor is decent, but again, like most Tier III cruisers, is nothing to write home about. It will be sufficient against cruiser and destroyer Armor Piercing ammunition when angled, but will be next to useless against battleship AP. Captains should not be relying on her armor to save them; her mobility and ability to strategically place herself are better options.

Her guns are of a large caliber (152 mm), and have the characteristics to match; slow reload, high damage, high shell arc, and good penetration.

Despite having generally worse statistics than her three Tier III Russian cruiser counterparts, Varyag remains an "OK" ship. There is nothing spectacularly good or bad about her, and can serve her captain well when played to her strengths.

Pros:

  • Decent shell penetration for HE and AP
  • Decent rudder shift time
  • Placement of guns on either side of ship allows player to quickly switch targets on a different side

Cons:

    Research

As a premium ship, Varyag doesn't have any upgrades to research.

    Optimal Configuration

    Upgrades

Varyag has access to the first two upgrade slots. Slot 1 can mount Main Armaments Modification 1 -20% to the risk of main battery becoming incapacitated. / +50% to main battery survivability. / -20% to main battery repair time. / -20% to the risk of torpedo tubes becoming incapacitated. / +50% to torpedo tubes survivability. / -20% to torpedo tubes repair time. to increase the survivability of her main guns, Auxiliary Armaments Modification 1 : +100% survivability to each. (not recommended with her pitiful secondaries and no AA), or Magazine Modification 1 : -70% risk. to reduce detonation chance. The second slot can mount Damage Control System Modification 1: -5% to the risk of fire. / -3% to the risk of flooding when torpedoes hit the torpedo protection. to reduce received fire and flooding chance, Propulsion Modification 1 Reduces time to full speed: -50% to time for reaching full power. / Increases engine power when the ship starts moving. to reduce chance of damage to the engine and engine repair time, or Steering Gears Modification 1 : -20% rudder shift time. to reduce chance of damage to the rudder and reduce its repair time.

The recommended upgrades for Varyag are as follows:

    Commander Skills

Key skills for Varyag commanders include Preventative Maintenance at Level 1, Adrenaline Rush at Level 2, Demolition Expert at Level 3, and Concealment Expert at Level 4. High Alert and Basics of Survivability can both be taken to improve the ship’s survivability. Captains may also find Expert Marksman useful to increase the turrets' traverse speed.

    Consumables

Varyag can equip the following consumables:

The premium consumable, Damage Control Party II (When activated, instantly repairs fires, floods, and incapacitations, and prevents more for the duration.), can be mounted in slot 1. Although it may be useful in certain siutations, it is generally not recommended.

    Camouflage

As a premium ship, Varyag comes included with Type 9 camouflage that lowers her detection radius, reduces the accuracy of incoming shells, reduces her repair costs, and increases the amount of experience she earns.
