Hector — Commonwealth special premium Tier IX cruiser.
In 1936, Great Britain started designing a cruiser based on a smaller version of the hull of Southampton-class cruisers. As a result, the Fiji-class ships were developed, but if Great Britain had decided to build full-sized AA defense cruisers, a project could have been implemented that embodied an AA defense cruiser based on the hull of a Belfast-class ship.
Hector was first released for sale on 18 January 2023, and is available in the Research Bureau for 46,000.

Hector is a Commonwealth light cruiser that shares the crawling smoke playstyle of Perth and Mysore, but at Tier IX. Hector is armed with fourteen 133 mm guns in twin turrets, with four twin turrets in an odd diamond-shaped, stepped turret configuration forward of her superstructure. She compliments her main battery with sixteen torpedoes in two quadruple mounts on each side. Her Crawling Smoke Generator , smaller guns, and impressive torpedo power lead to some gameplay similarities to Pan-Asia’s Tier IX cruiser, Sejong. One key difference is that Hector has the option of a Short-Range Hydro-Acoustic Search , instead of Defensive AA Fire .
The Hull
The shape of Hector’s hull is very similar to the Royal Navy’s Tier VIII Edinburgh, although Hector sits a little higher in the water. Where Hector differs to Edinburgh is that her upper belt area has 25 mm plating, and her deck has 27 mm. This results in her having marginally better overmatch resistance to large cruiser guns in the range of 229 and 380 mm in calibre, respectively. Hector has a small health pool at 34,400 stock, and in combination with her large profile, she is a vulnerable ship to battleship caliber guns at most angles. Fortunately, Hector has among best-in-tier concealment for a cruiser at an unmodified surface detection of 11.6 km, which can be reduced to 9.4 km surface detection and 6 km air detection with all relevant captain skills and modules equipped. Despite being armed with fourteen dual-purpose guns, Hector’s anti-aircraft armament is mediocre at best, able to shoot down patrol fighters but is ineffective at self-defence. Hector has slightly better AA than Tier VII Atlanta but at Tier IX, with 4 flak and poor DPS metrics.
Armament
Hector carries fourteen 133mm guns in twin turrets. Due to her odd turret layout, she has a limited firing angle - approximately between 40 and 60 degrees off of her bow - where she can fire all fourteen guns. Hector’s HE shells have good damage output but due to their small caliber, rely on hitting superstructures or starting fires. Thankfully Hector is an excellent fire starter, with an 8% fire chance on 14 barrels, with a 6.7 second unmodified reload speed. Hector compliments her good main battery armament with sixteen torpedoes in four quadruple launchers, two on each side. These torpedoes have identical characteristics to the Royal Navy’s Neptune, with a range of 10 km range, 16,767 maximum damage, a 96-second reload, and the ability to fire either individually or in a wide spread.
Mobility
With a maximum speed of 34 knots without the Sierra Mike signal, Hector is one of the quicker cruisers at Tier IX. Further, she has a reasonable rudder shift of 7.2 seconds with Steering Gears Modification 1 , which is recommended as she has an in-build propulsion upgrade, like her Royal Navy cousins. Her turning circle is 760 m and generally her rudder shift, turning circle are similar to the Royal Navy’s Edinburgh.
Battle Performance
Hector’s size and relatively poor armour result in her being easily punished for positioning errors, but she can recover some damage thanks to her Specialized Repair Teams consumable. Hector is subsequently more reliant on her Crawling Smoke Generator to deal damage, particularly in view of her poor firing angles. However, Hector’s excellent concealment, impressive torpedo power, and relatively good range for her gun caliber give her some much needed flexibility in between smoke uses.
Despite her odd turret layout and ability to move while keeping herself in smoke, Hector plays similarly to other high tier smoke cruisers; she is adept at supporting allied destroyers, and defending an area. For players familiar with Sejong or Jinan, Hector will be an easy ship to adapt to.Pros:
- Fast main battery reload with high DPM
- High fires per minute
- Good torpedo damage and range, with the ability to single-fire
- Improved acceleration.
- Very good concealment.
- Potent utility tools including Crawling Smoke Generator and short-range hydroacoustic search
Cons:
- Small health pool
- Vulnerable armor scheme
- Weak AA defenses
- Small gun caliber, lacking in HE penetration
- Long cooldown on Crawling Smoke Generator
