The Porsche company developed the concept of a new vehicle in 1939. On March 5, 1941, after numerous approvals, the company prepared blueprints and, in July 1941, produced the hull from mild steel. The hull and chassis (with detachable equipment for trenching) passed performance trials. One wooden prototype of the turret and one wooden prototype of the hull were manufactured. In 1942, the project was discontinued in favor of new heavy tanks.

Player Opinion

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • 8.8cm gun provides highest non howitzer alpha damage for tier 6 mediums
  • OK at sidestepping against lower tiers due to strong turret armour
  • Surprisingly good armor at front may bounce lower tier guns
  • The top 75mm provides best regular shell penetration for tier 6 mediums
  • Surprisingly good gun depression despite box looking mantlet

Cons:

  • 8.8cm has somewhat disappointing penetration when compared to alpha damage
  • Slowest traverse speed of all tier 6 mediums
  • Sluggish on uneven terrain
  • Front armor has the Tiger style box, barely providing any EAT
  • Large tank, easy target

Performance

This is a good support tank with a good top speed. You can and should be a part of the wolfpack, and exploit openings in the enemy's defenses. Be aware that it isn't the best flanking tank, your traverse is sluggish, and firing on the move with the 8.8cm is terrible, and may miss most of the time. Turret armor is sturdy and is pretty thick for its tier, this coupled with surprisingly decent gun depression, makes it viable with hull-down tactics.

When it comes to gun selection, it is one of the tanks with a real choice to make between the high penetrating and accurate 7.5mm or the high damage dealing 8.8cm. The 7.5 cm offers a viable tactic to snipe with its extreme accuracy and penetration. The 8.8 cm althogh not as accurate nor as high penetrating, it does have a considerably high 220 average damage using AP and APCR.

Individual player opinion: Myself, i use the 8.8 cm as it suits the tank more as the mobility and the tank itself just seems like a waste to use the 7.5 cm. Leave the sniping to other tanks such as the VK 30.02 (M) and tank destroyers, be a part of the wolfpack and the ability to mount the 8.8cm is quite an advantage to other tier 6 mediums.
