About

The long-awaited and in high-demand redirect project is finally cleared for liftoff! No more shall new visitors be bottom bamboozled when typing the in-battle vehicle names don't bring them to the tank they want to learn about! We have to keep this clean and organized until we establish some sort of standardization, less redirects is better, don't go too overboard mmk. It is important to avoid creating not only unnecessary disambiguations, but also unnecessary redirects. The higher-ups have set high hopes for this project, let's get the bacon sizzling.

  • SwissedToast's request: I need a statistics log for search queries. That search bar on the top right of the wiki, it must have query statistics stored somewhere. If we can get our hands on those all the guesswork will be taken out of this project. Example if search query "Tiger" has been searched 200,000 times, a redirect is necessary to redirect "Tiger" to "Pz.Kpfw. VI Tiger", which is the full page name Pz.Kpfw. VI Tiger.

How-To Create Redirect pages

  • type in the search query (ex. Tiger)
  • click "create the page "Tiger" on this wiki!"
  • put in:
#REDIRECT [[Pz.Kpfw. VI Tiger]]
  • hit save

next time someone searches "Tiger", they will be automatically redirected to Pz.Kpfw. VI Tiger, just like how it's supposed to be

Disambiguation

Another usage of redirects is to redirect search queries to disambiguation pages. Basically something like this:

The term "repair" may refer to:
* The repair skill
* Small and Large repair kits
* Game mechanics

with rephrased hyperlinks like [[Crew#Skills | repair skill] which would turn "repair skill" to a link to the skills section of the crew page, [[Crew#Skills | repair skill]. Disambiguations are an essential part of any wiki, absolutely necessary for MMORPG-dedicated wikis, though their usage here may be more limited.

The ambiguous search query "repair" will be redirected to Repair_(disambiguation) which will have the brief content like shown in above.

Redirect Tracker

Please put down the names of any redirects you make, though I can't expect every editor to see this tracker (including non-wiki team editors). This isn't absolutely necessary, but keeping our thumbs down on the-soon-to-be birthage of tons of new redirect pages can prevent clutter/over-redirecting. Redirects can get pretty messy, which was the reason we avoided using them for the longest time.
