Clemson — Tech Tree Tier III Destroyer.

Developed from the Wickes class, Clemson belonged to the second series of the U.S. Navy "flush-deckers". The ship's hull was designed in such a way that the single mounts of the main battery could be replaced by twin mounts in order to double the destroyer's firepower.

Entered Service: 1919
Ships in a series: 156

Performance

History

USS Clemson (DD-186) was an American destroyer and the lead ship of her class, laid down for the US Navy in 1918. An evolution of the preceding Wickes class, they had a pretty similar architecture as their predecessor, sharing the same “flush-deck” design and retaining most of their features, while increasing the fuel capacity of the destroyers. Discussion occurred during the design phase to upgrade the guns to 5 inches/127mm, but in the end, only five ships (DD-231 to DD-235) were equipped with such weaponry. Two of the Clemson were also armed with dual 4 inches/102mm, bringing the armament of the ship to eights guns. They shared the same ASW-focus of their predecessor, including the tapered stern to facilitate the deep-charges deployment which reduced their turning radius - in a similar manner to the Wickes.

She received 9 battle stars during world war two for her service in the pacific.

Clemson was commissioned in 1919 and was deployed in the Caribbean and Cuba waters until her placement into reserve in 1920, with less than five months of service. In 1922, she was decommissioned but kept into reserve due to budgetary cuts.

She was reclassified as AVP-17 in late-1939 and refitted to become a small aircraft tender before being recommissioned in 1940. Classified one last time as AVD-4, she was assigned to the east coast to tend patrol planes between the Galapagos, Brazil and the Carribeens until 1943, when she was refitted again to become again a destroyer, being reclassified as such only at the end of the year. Assigned to USS Bogue (CVE-9) submarine hunter-killer group, she took part in multiple patrols and submarine hunt, contributing to the destruction of 8 germans submarines ; she even shared the credit for the destruction of U-173. After a complete overhaul in early 1944, Clemson became a fast transport ship, being fitted with multiple cranes to carry landing crafts (being reclassified again, this time as APD-31). Deployed in the Pacific, she took part in the invasions of Saipan, Guam and Leyte among others. She resumed escort duties in 1945 before returning to the United States for a final refit and classification, returning to her original classification as DD-186. She was in the middle of her conversion when the war ended, and was decommissioned a couple of months later, being sold for scrap in late-1946.

In World of Warships Legends, Clemson is represented quite accurately. However, her main battery upgrade was never applied to her - the twin 102mm/4 inches being only equipped on USS Hovey (DD-208) and USS Long (DD-209). Both her war modernisation - as a seaplane tender and a landing craft tender are missing.
