Player Opinion

Pros:

  • Very quick reload and large amount of guns means that she can fire large amounts of shells at a very long range.
  • A high fire chance means that this high volume of fire is also bound to start large amounts of fires and easily burn down any opponents Marblehead cannot destroy with her Armour Percing shells.
  • Her torpedoes reload very quickly and can set large amounts of floods if the player can get consistent hits with them.

Cons:

  • Her low amount of armour makes her very susceptible to battleship calibre guns, especially from long range.
  • Her shell arcs are very floaty and her shells travel very slowly, making long distance gunnery a challenge.
  • Marbleheads torpedoes are very anemic and deal very little damage, and even less so if they hit a torpedo bulge.

Performance

Marblehead can be a formidable opponent in a skilled players hands, being able to easily dispatch any enemy vessel she faces if played properly, however, if a player makes a mistake, this can cost them dearly with a premature return to port or losing half their health in a single salvo. She is best played behind an island, using her fighter plane to spot enemies for her or using her team to spot. Her high firing arcs compound this and make islands a great asset. To utilise her strengths a player should pay attention to the minimap and choose the most strategic targets to destroy. These will usually be destroyers as they can cause havoc if left alone. Use Marbleheads hydro consumable to find a destroyer and then kill it with your fast firing, powerful High Explosive shells. Be wary of a destroyers torpedoes though, as Marblehead has no torpedo protection and can be quite unwieldy.

It is of utmost importance that a Marblehead player is not caught broadside as even destroyers with Armour Piercing loaded can citadel her. To mitigate the chances of this happening pay attention to the minimap and prioritise survival over kills or damage.

History

Marblehead was authorised to be built on the 1st of July, 1918 and was launched on the 9th of October 1923. Before World War 2 the Navy decided to remove her lower torpedo tubes (seen on Omaha in game) as water could easily enter while they were in use. This was also done to save weight. Further armament changes during World War 2 were made to further decrease weight and add more Anti Aircraft guns to adapt her to the extensive use of naval aircraft in WWII. On the night of the 24th of January 1942 Marblehead covered the withdrawal of Dutch and American warships after they had destroyed a convoy near the Makassar Straits. She then participated in the ensuing Battle of Makassar Strait, sustaining serious damage from enemy bombers. She managed to survive and got to port, was repaired and participated in Operation Dragoon (the allied invasion of Southern France) and was subsequently scrapped on the 27th of February 1946, having earned 2 battle stars.
