Player Opinion
Pros and Cons
Pros:
Great dive speed that allows for surprise attacks from above. Good Climbing speed one the top engine and airframe are unlocked.
Cons:
Not so good firepower. The 50cals have to get up close to do anything. Below average maneuverability.
Performance
The 2nd Mustang available, it is best at climbing to 10000 feet then unleashing 50cal hell on whatever it dives on. Do not turn and stay at altitude to get the best out of the P-51D. Yak 9Us are prey of the D model mustang, as are all the heavy fighters in its tier. Like the 51-A before it, the way to kill it is to trap it down low with its engine damaged in a turning fight.
Early Research
Engine and airframe are immidiant musts. Then install one of the two 6 50cal sets. The A/M-2 for speed and maneuverability, or the MG-53-2 for fire power
