Chkalov — Soviet special premium Tier VIII aircraft сarrier.

The further development of the Project 71 aircraft carrier continued under the "large aircraft carrier" project, codenamed 71B. The ship would have made it possible for the main naval forces to utilize their aviation quickly and efficiently in the open seas and near the coastline in areas located far from naval bases, but the project wasn't implemented due to the outbreak of World War II.

Player Opinion


Pros:

  • All squadrons possess very high damage potential.
  • Large plane reserves, low hull detectability, and jet boosters allow for rapid cycling of squadrons at close range.
  • Fast torpedoes which are dropped in a tight spread.
  • Versatile skip bombers that can set multiple fires per run.
  • Possesses tier X fighter squadrons, with 7 aircraft and a larger patrol radius.
  • 30mm deck allows Chkalov to shatter destroyer-caliber HE and ricochet 406mm AP.
  • Powerful AA suite with above average range.

Cons:

  • Very poor aircraft cruising speeds, though slightly faster than those of Pobeda.
  • Extremely long torpedo arm distance, equaling that of Admiral Nakhimov.
  • Lack of aircraft speed and staying power makes Chkalov inefficient at spotting and other teamplay tasks.
  • Dive bombers are inaccurate and remain vulnerable to AA, making plane losses common and high alpha strikes rare.
  • Large, above-water citadel with only 100mm of horizontal protection.
  • Below average plane regeneration speed.
