Special

Constellation — American special premium Tier VIII battleship.

In 1911, when information about the keel-laying of Japanese ships of the Kongō-class came to light, the leadership of the U.S. Navy realized the need to build a battlecruiser. When the construction process started, the Lexington-class battleships were the largest warships ever built in the United States. Their armament consisted of eight 406 mm/50-caliber guns housed in four twin-gun turrets. USS Constellation was laid down in August 1920. The construction order was canceled three years later following the outcome of the Washington Naval Conference.

Player Opinion

Performance

Until the development of high efficiency power plants, capital ships were slow due to the massive amounts of armor that they carried and the wide hull forms required to keep that mass afloat. As power plant efficiency improved, navies started considering the 'battlecruiser' — a capital ship with battleship armament that traded some armor mass for speed. The high speed would give them more tactical options, while maintaining hitting power.

The U.S. Navy set out to build only one class of battlecruiser: the Lexington class. Of six ships, four (including Constellation herself) were cancelled and scrapped on the ways in 1922 due to the Washington Naval Treaty, while two – Lexington and Saratoga – were converted to aircraft carriers and served with distinction in WWII. In World of Warships, Constellation has been completed and later modernized — a true battlecruiser.

As a Lexington class battlecruiser, Constellation sacrifices armor for speed. She is the second fastest Tier VIII battleship (without factoring in speed boost) at 33.3 knots, falling just behind Champagne at 34 knots. The armor on Constellation is light, only having a 27mm armored bow and stern compared to the 32mm of the other US Tier VII battleships. This allows Constellation to be overmatched by 406mm and higher shell sizes, meaning she and most battleships at the tier and higher can overmatch her bow and stern. Her armor belt is also the lightest of the other Tier VIII US BBs at 178mm, far below the 305mm of North Carolina, the next lightest armored US Battleship at the tier, making Constellation easier to be penetrated by lightly armed ships.

To set Constellation further apart from the rest of her nation and ship class, he is only the second battleship to come with radar, a feature shared by Missouri. She further distinguishes herself by being the first USN battleship to be armed with torpedoes.

Constellation is armed with 8 406mm guns, arranged in a ABXY format. They have the same characteristics as Colorado, reloading in 30 seconds and have an alpha strike of 99,200. Contrary to Colorado’s guns however, Constellation comes with better dispersion. Constellation has the best dispersion of all tier VIII battleships with a maximum dispersion of 194m compared to Amagi at 214m. The downside to Constellation’s guns however is the angle of fire for the aft guns. At further ranges they are not as limited, but to use her aft guns at close range, the ship needs to be showing a good amount of broadside (roughly 43 degrees at 10km) to get all guns on target. Constellation is armed with 6 torpedoes arranged in a pair of triple tubes on either side of the ship's stern. They are the same torpedoes carried on Tier VIII Destroyer Kidd, with a max damage of 16633, range of 9.2km and a base speed of 55 knots.

What sets Constellation apart from all battleships except Tier XI Missouri is that it comes equipped with Surveillance RadarWhile active, detects all enemy ships within the specified radius, disregarding obstacles such as smoke and terrain.. To make Constellation more unique is that she can mount both a Catapult FighterWhile active, a group of fighter planes circles the ship providing protection by attacking incoming enemy aircraft. or Spotting AircraftWhile active, a spotter plane circles the ship enhancing main battery firing range., and Surveillance RadarWhile active, detects all enemy ships within the specified radius, disregarding obstacles such as smoke and terrain.. The ability to mount both spotting aircraft and radar, allows Constellation to play both at range and up close. The range of the radar is 10km, with an action time of 30 seconds, and a reload time of 144 seconds. There are only 3 charges compared to Spotting Aircraft’s 4 charges.

Commanders of the Constellation will find that playing on a flank and at medium to long ranges will be more successful, using its fast speed to set up cross fires or catch ships broadside. While having the same amount of HP as Alabama at 63,300, Constellation is not as heavily armored and will lose HP faster from lighter armaments. To counter this, Constellation should use its speed and 15.3 second base rudder shift to attempt to dodge incoming fire. While being equipped with Surveillance RadarWhile active, detects all enemy ships within the specified radius, disregarding obstacles such as smoke and terrain. and torpedoes, It is best to keep Constellation at range due to the poor turret angles up close. Meaning the radar and torpedoes should only be used if players are pushing a flank with support of other ships, setting up ambushes, and in retreating maneuvers. If she does end up within 10km of an enemy ship, and provided the enemy ship is sailing towards the Constellation, Players should use the torpedoes before the back turrets to minimize the amount of side being shown for as long as possible.

An Alternative Opinion:

Constellation is a ship best played at short to medium range. Although she is capable of slugging it out at longer ranges, players will likely find that in Random Battles she is more fun if played as a brawler, similar to Tirpitz. Should she be chosen for a more competitive playstyle or environment, she will surely be a threat later in the match due to her ability to put pressure on objectives and spot enemy destroyers that may be lurking nearby. In addition, her torpedo armament enables her to devastate an enemy battleship in a knife-fight, should the player choose to play that aggressively.

Optimal Configuration

Upgrades

The following recommendations are made based on a play style emphasizing short to medium-range engagements.

The recommended upgrades for Constellation are as follows:

Alternatively, the following upgrades are recommended, if available:

Commander Skills

Note that recommendations with three stars are the skills recommended in the client. Skills designated with two stars are recommended as still being useful, despite not being recommended in the client.

Consumables

Constellation can equip the following consumables:

Camouflage

As a premium ship, Constellation comes included with Type 10 camouflage that lowers her detection radius, reduces the accuracy of incoming shells, reduces her repair costs, and increases the amount of experience she earns.

Signals

Note: Use of the Juliet Charlie signal makes detonation impossible.
