+Released with Update 0.6.8 and the Operation Dynamo scenario, HMS Gallant marks the second entry of Royal Navy destroyers into World of Warships. Gallant is something of a mix of existing destroyer styles, packing torpedoes that will remind players of those found on Japanese destroyers married with main battery guns that are analogous to those of the American destroyer line.

?DyN5MuKc0TY+Gallant’s torpedoes are identical to those deployed aboard Tier VI British cruiser Leander and pack a nasty punch for the tier, topping out at over 15,000 alpha damage. She carries them in a pair of quadruple-tube, centerline-mounted launchers — just like American counterpart Farragut — with a speed and range similar to the fish found deployed aboard Shinonome and Ernst Gaede. What makes Gallant unique is that she retains the ability of British cruisers to launch her torpedoes singly. This greatly increases her tactical flexibility, allowing her to spread her torpedo salvos around in a variety of different directions and angles and wreak havoc on enemy formations. The trade-off for this flexibility is the longest torpedo reload of all Tier VI destroyers and some of the worst torpedo firing angles of any destroyer in the game; the farthest forward that Gallant can rotate her torpedo launchers is nearly 60 degrees off the bow, for example.
 +
+Her guns will feel vaguely familiar to players accustomed to Farragut. While her firing range is significantly shorter than that of her US Navy counterpart, Gallant’s reload time, turret traverse time, and shell arcs are comparable. Gallant acquits herself well in close-range combat — especially if captains equip Main Battery Modification 2 — or as an extreme nuisance to enemy capital ships with the higher-than-average (for Tier VI, anyway) fire chance on her high explosive rounds. She's more than capable of defeating any of the Tier VI Japanese destroyers or Farragut in a straight up gunfight, but her low health pool will work against her when up against Ernst Gaede or Gnevny. Unless they're badly wounded, courting a gun duel with either of the latter is inadvisable.
 +
+Packing the same standard consumables available to most other Tier VI destroyers — Engine Boost and Smoke Generator — Gallant is a well-rounded destroyer whose primary play style is likely to be focused around her torpedo armament, but who is capable of flexing her main battery guns in the mid- and late-game to finish off opposing destroyers that have survived to that point.

+* Best turning radius of Tier VI destroyers (540 meters).
+* Second best detection range, only being worse than Hatsuharu.
+* Torpedoes are hard hitting, while being relatively fast and having good concealment.
+* Can single fire said torpedoes, just like British cruisers.
+* High fire chance with HE shells.

 |Cons=<!-- write list of negative points below. use * as in ordinary wiki-list. --> |Cons=<!-- write list of negative points below. use * as in ordinary wiki-list. -->
+* Torpedoes reload slowly, at 96 seconds.
+* HE shells lose much of their velocity at range.
+* Low amount of health — only 12,000 hit points — puts her near the bottom of Tier VI destroyers.
 +* Poor torpedo firing arcs.
 +* Short main battery range.
+* Anti-aircraft armament does a pathetic 4.2 damage per second, at a paltry 1.2 km range.

 +
 +==== Design ====
+With development of the new group of destroyers starting in the spring of 1933, the Naval Staff envisioned the new G-class destroyers to be built as an improvement upon the preceding F-class destroyers.
 +
+Initially, the new class was to be the primary test bed for larger 5.1-inch guns to give destroyers a heavier punch. The existing mounts for the 5.1-inch guns could only elevate up to 30˚, however, 10˚ below the required maximum. Thus, new gun mounts were under development and were to be fitted onto the G-class destroyers. Unfortunately, designs of the mounts were delayed, and in order to keep to schedule, designers opted to reuse the armament of the F-class: 4.7-inch Mark IX guns in four single mounts; two forward, two aft. Like their predecessors, a gun pit was built around each mount to allow the breech to depress low enough to elevate the barrel to 40˚; furthermore, the anti-aircraft armament and the torpedo armament were also re-purposed off the F-class.
 +
+One modification that did see implementation was the incorporation of new Admiralty propulsion machinery that was smaller than that deployed aboard the F-class. This allowed for the overall machinery rooms and spaces to me more compact, resulting in a reduction of tonnage for no loss of performance. The arrangement itself was identical: three boilers that fed to two turbines, each driving a single screw. Another design change was the removal of “cruiser-turbines”: turbines ideal for low speeds, which allowed for greater fuel economy. A gradual change in the opinion of the Naval Staff was that actions during wartime would definitely exceed 15 knots, making a low-speed turbine useless.
 +
+Before the design was finalized, a few more changes were implemented to the class. Depth charge racks and launchers were installed to provide the ships a capability to combat submarines, in conjunction with the installation of ASDIC equipment. Smoke-laying apparatus was installed into the funnel systems to generate smoke screens for fleet operations. Greater fuel stores increased the endurance by another 1,500 nautical miles to a total of 5,500 nautical miles.
 +
+In accordance to the requirements set by the Naval Staff in 1928, all pre-war Royal Navy destroyers were to adhere to a tonnage limit of 1,320 tons. The G-class destroyers clocked in just shy of 1,350 tons. Post-war critique speculates that such a limitation prevented improvements to greater personnel accommodations and resource stores.
 +
+Certain ships of the G-class were subject to interesting experiments. HMS Glowworm was installed with 2 quintuple torpedo-tube launchers. HMS Gipsy was installed with Johnson boilers; they were proved to be lighter, smaller, and more robust than their Admiralty equivalents. HMS Grenville – designated the flotilla leader – was larger and heavier than her sister ships as she had a fifth 4.7-in gun installed in between the funnels.
 +
+With the tenders for ship construction finalized by 1934, construction of the destroyers began. HMS Gallant (H59) was laid down on 15 September 1934 at the Alexander Stephen and Sons Ltd. Shipyard. Launched 26 September 1935, she was commissioned into the Royal Navy on 25 February 1936.
 +
+HMS Gallant went through a few wartime armament modifications. In May 1940, her rear torpedo-tube launcher was removed to make space for the installation of a single 3-inch Mark V anti-aircraft gun. Furthermore, throughout the wartime years, 20mm Oerlikon cannons gradually replaced the 50-caliber Vickers machine guns.

HMS Gallant was commissioned on 25 February 1936, joining the 1st Destroyer Flotilla of the Mediterranean Fleet. During the late 1930’s she patrolled Spanish waters during the Spanish Civil War, coming under attack by Spanish Nationalist aircraft in April 1937 but emerging undamaged. She was still in the Mediterranean when World War II broke out, but she — along with her entire flotilla — was transferred to the Western Approaches Command by the beginning of October 1939, before being moved (again) to Nore Command at the end of October. She spent the rest of 1939 and early 1940 escorting convoys and performing patrols in the North Sea until late May, when she moved to the English Channel in preparation for Operation Dynamo: the evacuation of British Expeditionary Force troops surrounded at Dunkirk.  HMS Gallant was commissioned on 25 February 1936, joining the 1st Destroyer Flotilla of the Mediterranean Fleet.  In late July 1940 Gallant was assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet, sailing for Gibraltar on 24 July to join Force H, responsible for screening aircraft carrier HMS Argus. She served in this role through the end of August, when she was moved to the screen of aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious and battleship HMS Valiant to reinforce the British Fleet in the Eastern Mediterranean. Gallant returned Gibraltar via Malta in mid-September and remained on station around Gibraltar, where, on 20 October, she and destroyers HMS Griffin and HMS Hotspur were credited for the sinking of Italian submarine Lafolé. On 31 October she joined the screen of battlecruiser HMS Renown and battleship HMS Barham to monitor Vichy French naval movements off Morocco. In November she was transferred back to the Eastern Mediterranean Fleet, joining Barham again to sail for the Eastern Mediterranean. On 24 November she screened battleship HMS Ramillies and accompanying ships being transferred out of the Mediterranean via Gibraltar. She was involved in the inconclusive Battle of Cape Spartivento on 27 November, finally arriving at Alexandria on the 29th. Gallant — British special premium Tier VI destroyer.

One of the U.K. G-class destroyers of the inter-war period. The ship participated in the Dunkirk evacuation when she rescued Allied troops from the beaches and harbor of Dunkirk. In total, she evacuated around 1,500 soldiers. On 29 May 1940, she was damaged during a raid from German dive bombers, but still made it back to England under her own power.

Gallant first went on sale on the NA server on 19 July 2017, and on the EU server on 20 July 2017.

Player Opinion

Performance

Released with Update 0.6.8 and the Operation Dynamo scenario, HMS Gallant marks the second entry of Royal Navy destroyers into World of Warships. Gallant is something of a mix of existing destroyer styles, packing torpedoes that will remind players of those found on Japanese destroyers married with main battery guns that are analogous to those of the American destroyer line.

Gallant’s torpedoes are identical to those deployed aboard Tier VI British cruiser Leander and pack a nasty punch for the tier, topping out at over 15,000 alpha damage.

Her guns will feel vaguely familiar to players accustomed to Farragut.

Packing the same standard consumables available to most other Tier VI destroyers — Engine BoostWhile active, increases a ship's speed by a fixed percentage. and Smoke GeneratorWhile active, generates a smoke screen that blocks line-of-sight for both enemies and teammates.Gallant is a well-rounded destroyer whose primary play style is likely to be focused around her torpedo armament, but who is capable of flexing her main battery guns in the mid- and late-game to finish off opposing destroyers that have survived to that point.

Information on the website: Armada: Gallant

Pros:

 • Best turning radius of Tier VI destroyers (540 meters).
 • Second best detection range, only being worse than Hatsuharu.
 • Torpedoes are hard hitting, while being relatively fast and having good concealment.
 • Can single fire said torpedoes, just like British cruisers.
 • High fire chance with HE shells.

Cons:

 • Torpedoes reload slowly, at 96 seconds.
 • HE shells lose much of their velocity at range.
 • Low amount of health — only 12,000 hit points — puts her near the bottom of Tier VI destroyers.
 • Poor torpedo firing arcs.
 • Short main battery range.
 • Anti-aircraft armament does a pathetic 4.2 damage per second, at a paltry 1.2 km range.

Research

As a premium ship, Gallant doesn't have any upgrades to research.

Optimal Configuration

Upgrades

The recommended upgrades for Gallant are as follows:

Upgrade Slot 2 provides access to Engine Boost Modification 1 Increases the action time of the Engine Boost and Emergency Engine Power consumables.: +50% action time., a special upgrade which increases the duration of the Engine BoostWhile active, increases a ship's speed by a fixed percentage. consumable by 50%. This upgrade is a viable alternative to Propulsion Modification 1 because the additional speed provides Gallant with more ability to reposition and maneuver around enemy ships while maintaining enough distance to remain undetected.

Commander Skills

Consumables

Gallant can equip the following consumables:

Although Gallant has mediocre firepower in terms of both torpedoes and main batteries, depending on the player's playstyle of preference, Smoke GeneratorWhile active, generates a smoke screen that blocks line-of-sight for both enemies and teammates. is more useful for passive players looking to stealthily deal damage to unaware and/or unobservant enemy ships, while Engine BoostWhile active, increases a ship's speed by a fixed percentage. is more useful for players looking to fight other enemy destroyers. Players that play a mix of using all possible main armaments are left to their discretion of mounting premium consumables.

Aggressive players are recommended to mount premium Damage Control Party II (When activated, instantly repairs fires, floods, and incapacitations, and prevents more for the duration.) for repairing damaged modules (such as the engine or rudder) and premium Engine Boost II (While active, increases a ship's speed by a fixed percentage.) for better evasion. Aggressive players that can utilize both Smoke Generator and Engine Boost to their advantage in gun fights with other destroyers are recommended to mount the premium versions.

Camouflage

As a premium ship, Gallant comes included with Type 10 camouflage that lowers her detection radius, reduces the accuracy of incoming shells, and increases the amount of experience she earns.

Signals

Gallant is able to mount eight signal flags simultaneously. Captains should mount India X-Ray (+1% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber above 160mm. / +0.5% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber below 160mm. / +5% to the risk of your ship's magazine detonating.) and Victor Lima (+1% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber above 160mm / +0.5% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber below 160mm. / +4% chance of causing flooding.) flags to further increase the ship’s already high fire chance. Juliet Charlie (-100% to the risk of your ship's magazine detonating.) flags can be equipped to mitigate the increased detonation chance applied when using India X-Ray flags. Sierra Mike (+5% to the ship's maximum speed.) flags are also highly recommended to increase the ship’s top speed. Lastly, economic and special flags may be used in combination with the ship’s premium benefits to increase the amount of experience or credits earned per battle.

Note: Use of the Juliet Charlie signal makes detonation impossible.
