Choose your type of battle!
There are multiple types of battles available in World of Warships. The type of battle is selected by clicking the icon to the right of the "BATTLE!" button at the top of the Port screen.

Co-op Battle

Unlocked at: Account Level 1
Maximum Number of Players: 9 (9 per team; enemy team is entirely computer-controlled)

Coop_battle_wows.png

In a Co-operative Battle, a team of players face off against a team of computer-controlled bots. In cases where there are not enough ships in the queue to facilitate a full game of the correct tier, bots are used to complete the team of human players. Bots are denoted by the colons before and after their names (such as ":Hipper:"). Credit and experience rewards earned in co-operative play are notably lower than those earned in Random Battles.

Random Battle

Unlocked at: Account Level 3
Maximum Number of Players: 24 (12 per team)

Random_battle_wows.png

Random Battles are the most popular battle type in World of Warships. Captains are dropped into a game full of other players, according to the matchmaking system. The majority of Random Battles are 12v12 battles; however, occasionally the matchmaking software will create smaller games (such as 7v7 or 9v9). Players queue for Random Battles individually and are placed on teams randomly by the matchmaking system solely based on the tier and type of ship selected; player skill is not taken into account. Credit and experience rewards are greatly enhanced from Co-operative Battles.

Regular achievements can only be earned in Random and Ranked Battles.

There is no minimum number of players in higher-tier[1] Random Battle; it is possible for a game to be created as 1v1, though this is exceptionally rare and usually only occurs for high-tier ships that queue up for a Random Battle during off-peak hours.

Scenario

Main article: Scenarios

Unlocked at: Account Level 12
Maximum Number of Players: 7 (7 per team; enemy units are entirely computer-controlled)

Icon_24.png
Scenarios pit a team of players against increasingly difficult waves of computer-controlled opponents in operations with unique objectives. Players are allowed to queue solo, but are encouraged to gather their friends into a division to attempt scenarios; assembling a full division of 7 players will greatly increase chances of success. The minimum division size is 4 players. Credit and experience rewards are comparable to Random Battles if all objectives are completed, but are significantly less if not all secondary objectives are completed.

Scenarios have their own set of achievements. However, they do not award signal flags like regular achievements.

Ranked Battle

Information on the website: Ranked: Seasons and Sprints
Unlocked at: Account Level 14
Number of Players: 14 (7 per team)

Icon_16.png

Ranked Battles are only available at specific times and are restricted to certain tiers of ships. A typical "season" of Ranked Battles runs approximately 6-7 weeks, and involves players progressing up a ladder-style ranking system from a high rank (such as "Rank 20") towards a low rank, with Rank 1 being the pinnacle of the ladder. Players queue for Ranked Battles individually and are placed on teams randomly by the matchmaking system, similar to how Random Battle matchmaking is done; however, Ranked Battle matchmaking is grouped such that players are teamed up with — and playing against — players of similar rank. Credit and experience rewards are equivalent to those earned in Random Battles.

Regular achievements can only be earned in Random and Ranked Battles.

Clan Battle

Main article: Clan Battles

Unlocked at: Account Level 15
Number of Players: 14 (7 per team)

Icon_27.png

Similar to Ranked Battles, Clan Battles are only available at specific times and are restricted to certain tiers of ships. A team is formed from within a single Clan by at least one officer. Players queue for Clan Battles as a team, and are matched up against a team of similar rating that is likewise in the queue. Credit and experience rewards are fixed at 2,500 experience and 300,000Credits for a win versus 250 experience and 150,000Credits for a loss; Clan Battles also award a +300% Free experience modifier per battle.

Training

Unlocked at: Account Level 15
Number of Players: Varies (12 per team maximum)

Icon_2.png

A Training Room allows players to generate fully custom scenarios on a map of their choice, choosing the duration of the game, the team configurations, and even the exact number of ships on each team. Unbalanced teams are allowed. Many players utilize this functionality to test game mechanics, perfect their aim at certain ships, or to scrimmage other players in organized leagues. Playing games in a Training Mission earns zero credits and experience; however, there is no service or ammunition cost and mounted camouflage or signal flags are not consumed. A Training Mission is economically neutral: players spend nothing to run one and earn nothing in return.

Battle Modes

There are three available Battle Modes in World of Warships: Standard, Domination, and Epicenter.

How to Win

Point Accumulation

All modes of battle are scored using a points system. Each team starts with a fixed amount of points and gains or loses points for various events, depending on game mode. Battles are on a 20 minute timer, with four possible victory conditions:

  1. Destroy all enemy ships.
  2. Reduce enemy team's score to 0 points.
  3. Score 1000 points before time expires.
  4. Have more points than the enemy team when time expires.

If time expires and both teams have an equal number of points, the game is considered a Draw. This is treated as a loss for both teams for the purposes of experience and credit gains.

If the battle ends because the last ships destroy each other by ramming, the team with more points wins. That ramming does not change the points. If the teams have the same number of points, it is a draw.

When no more humans are playing or watching, a co-op battle ends in a draw.

Example: When you kill an enemy destroyer in a Random Battle, your team gets 30 points and the enemy team loses 45 points.

Domination

The Domination Mode configuration of Solomon Islands.

Domination Mode games feature a map populated by two, three, or four control areas. Two-area Domination games are exclusive to Ranked Battles; three and four-area Domination games are the most common game mode in Random Battles. In three-area Domination games, the game begins with no capture points taken. In four-area Domination games, four maps — Estuary, Two Brothers, Ring and Haven — begin the game with the closest control point to each spawn area already under a team's control.

There are 2-4 control areas, displayed as white diamonds with the letters A-D on them. Teams earn control of a capture point by having ships within the designated control area; additional ships within the boundary will increase the speed of capture: one ship within a boundary will capture an area in 60 seconds; two or more will capture an area in 40 seconds. (For Ranked Battles and Clan Battles, these values are 40 and ~27 seconds, respectively.) Capture progress is halted at its present level in the capture area if ships from both teams are present. Once captured, each capture area gives points to the team that owns it on a regular interval per the table below, unless an enemy ship is in that capture area.

Sailing into an enemy's control area will immediately prevent them from accruing points from it, as well as beginning the capture of it (unless they also occupy it). Taking damage will cause a ship to lose half of the capture points it has accrued. If an enemy ship enters a control area that is controlled by the enemy, the capture indicator will rotate to indicate that the point is being contested. Capture progress for the enemy team is indicated by the point marker border changing from green to red.

In addition, teams score points for killing enemy ships — and have points deducted for the death of friendly ships — per the above table.

Standard

The Standard Mode configuration of Solomon Islands.

In a Standard Mode battle, each team has a single control area (their base) that starts the game under their control. Each team starts with 300 points. There are 2 control areas, displayed as colored squares with flags in them. Each team will constantly accrue points at the rate of two (2) points every six (6) seconds for maintaining control of their control area. In addition, each team scores points for killing enemy ships — and has points deducted for the death of friendly ships — per the above table.

Sailing into the enemy's control area will immediately prevent them from accruing points from it, as well as beginning the capture of it (unless they also occupy it). Taking damage will cause a ship to lose half of the capture points it has accrued. If an enemy ship enters your control area, the capture indicator will rotate to indicate that the point is being contested. Capture progress for the enemy team is indicated by the point marker border changing from green to red. One ship will fully capture the enemy base in 180 seconds; two or more will do so in 120 seconds. A team that captures the enemy base gets 1000 points and wins the battle.

Epicenter

The Epicenter Mode configuration of Big Race.

Epicenter is the newest Battle Mode in World of Warships. Each team starts with 450 points. A circular area and two ringlike areas around it are located on the map.

Capture durations:

  • circular area: 55 seconds (1 ship), ~37 seconds (more than 1 ship)
  • inner ring: 40 seconds (1 ship), ~27 seconds (more than 1 ship)
  • outer ring: 25 seconds (1 ship), ~17 seconds (more than 1 ship)

Capturing an area brings 5 points and lowers the enemy team's points like that:

  • circular area: -25
  • inner ring: -15
  • outer ring: -10

Controlling an area brings 5 points every 5 seconds.

In addition, each team scores points for killing enemy ships — and has points deducted for the death of friendly ships — per the above table.

Sailing into an enemy's area will immediately prevent them from accruing points from it, as well as beginning the capture of it (unless they also occupy it). Taking damage will cause a ship to lose half of the capture points it has accrued. Capture progress for the enemy team is indicated by the point marker border changing from green to red.

Arms Race

Arms Race battle mode is sometimes used in Ranked Battles, Ranked Sprint Battles or in special events. Special areas that provide buffs spawn on the map. If you can make it to a special area and activate it before your opponents do, your entire team will get a bonus to their combat abilities till the end of that battle. If you capture more than one of the same buff, the bonuses provided by them stack up. Eight minutes after a battle starts, a Key Area appears in the center of the map. The diameter of this area then shrinks over time. The team that captures it will be able to quickly gain an advantage in points and ultimately win.

In Ranked Battle Season 18 (September/October 2020), it was used on the maps Sleeping Giant and Warriors's Path with these rules:

  • Max. battle duration: 20 minutes
  • The teams start the battle with 500 points.
  • Points for destroying enemy ships: +45 for destroyed aircraft carriers, +30 for other destroyed ships
  • Points for losing allied ships: -75 for lost aircraft carriers, -50 for other lost ships

Buffs

  • Small buff areas appear on the map. Each buff area has a buff type.
  • 4 buff types:
    • Consumables
    • Maneuverability
    • Reloading
    • Repairs
  • Each buff type has 7 levels (from 0 to 6). The levels are at 0 at the battle start.
  • Buff areas are mirrored (both teams have the same distances to the same buff types).
  • Buff areas become active (can be seized) 2 minutes after they appear.
  • When you enter a buff area after its activation, you will seize the buff instantly for your team. If you are within a buff area together with any enemy ships at the moment of its activation, the team with the most ships within the area gets the bonus. If the ship numbers are equal, the area remains in an uncaptured state until the balance of power inside it shifts one way or another.
  • Seizing a buff increases the buff level of that buff type for the allied team.
  • Seizing a buff brings 20 points for the allied team and -20 points for the enemy team.
  • Right after the battle starts, 5 buff areas appear. After at least 2 minutes, 1 or 2 more buff areas appear; this is then repeated again and again.
  • The locations and buff types of the buff areas are random.
  • Quick command for buff areas (F3): "Seize the buff!"
  • When you press and hold H, you see the effects of the buffs on your ship/aircraft.
  • When you press and hold Alt (or in full alternative interface mode), you see how many buffs of each type you have.

Consumables buff

  • Reload time of ship consumables: -5% per level
  • Reload time of squadron consumables: -10% per level

Maneuverability buff

  • Rudder shift time: -10% per level
  • Ship's maximum speed: +3% per level
  • Reload speed of squadron engine boost: +20% per level

Reloading buff

  • Main battery reload time: -5% per level
  • Torpedo tubes reload time: -5% per level
  • Aircraft restoration time: -5% per level

Repairs buff

  • Ship HP regeneration per second: 0.05% of total ship HP per level
  • Squadron HP regeneration per second: 0.3% of total aircraft HP per level

Key Area

  • Big key area appears after 8 minutes in the map center.
  • It is slowly shrinking.
  • Capture duration: 120 seconds (1 ship), 80 seconds (more than 1 ship)
  • Capturing the area brings 10 points.
  • Holding the area brings 10 points every 2 seconds.

Bans from battle types

If you show too much unsporting conduct in battles, you will get banned from playing Random Battles, Ranked Battles and Scenarios.[2] Unsporting conduct includes:

  • inactivity in battle (being AFK - Away From Keyboard)
  • damaging/destroying allies (friendly fire)
  • fleeing the battlefield: being active for less than 75% of your lifetime in the battle.

Temporary Types

Introductory Mission

Available at: Account Level 1

WoWS_ServiceIcon_Silver_Compass.png

The Introductory Mission is only available to new players. It introduces the basics of gunnery, maneuvering, capturing control areas, and achieving objectives. It can be played as frequently as desired, up until a player has completed 10 battles of any type.

Space Battle

Main article: Space Battles

Unlocked by: Available during Update 0.7.3 only
Number of Players: 18 (9 per team)
