Base rudder shift time is faster than both the Montana and Yamato.

Special

Grosser Kurfürst — German special premium Tier X battleship.

The experience gained from battleships at the beginning of World War II prompted a revision of the ships under construction. It was necessary to improve the horizontal armor while maintaining the draft at 11.5 m for operations in the shallow waters of the North Sea. The new design incorporated a triple bottom and an increased quantity of watertight compartments to enhance protection against underwater explosions. The main armament was upgraded to feature twelve 420 mm guns. It was planned to lay down ships with the new design in 1942, but the construction needs of the Navy reoriented toward submarines, and new battleships were no longer laid down.

Player Opinion

Performance

Sharing the name with one of the Kaiser's sister ships, the newcomer of the tier 10 battleships to break the schism of both the Yamato and the Montana, the Großer Kurfürst (translation: Great Elector from the title of Frederick William, Elector of Brandenburg as he was called "The Great Elector"), shortened to "GK" or simply the "Kurfurst", will live to her name as "the great elector" as she breaks the long standing stalemate of both nations' own pinnacle battleships within the end tier by simply entering into the fray. Subtlety is not of this battleship's forte because when she is detected, the entire enemy knows where she is currently and this may work to your advantage or against you as players will usually prioritize destroying the first battleship they see as well as concentrate or commit all available ships to your location. Despite her glaring size, she presents herself with an effective array of two sets of guns, the same as her predecessor Friedriche der Große, but with her triple mount turrets with the same AB-XY configuration, even the US Montana who shares the same triple mount turret style and layout will respect her for her heavy broadside and the more responsive turret traverse which can be made a bit faster, surpassing the US battleship by right of barrel diameter for her last guns are the 420mm/17 inch barrels that her predecessor mounted on four dual mount turrets. With this asset in mind, the battleship can prove to have more broadside weight of her US counterpart all the while maintaining the potential 1 salvo destruction that the Montana had enjoyed. In addition, her bustling secondary batteries ensure that should the enemy get close enough for the guns to unload, they will be slowly whittled down for the ship to simply deal heavy damage or outright destroying them and with her size to be able to utilize her offensive assets effectively comes several defenses to protect such a large ship like the Kurfurst.

To parry aerial assaults, her modest AA suite is more than enough to deter strike aircraft from dedicating their payloads to hit the battleship and her armor is designed in such a way that she can sustain the most grievous of heavy damages and still keep afloat, owing to the unique layout that protects her citadel from well placed shots and her massive health pool which means she can last longer in strenuous combat where other battleships can not. As per standard for battleships starting from Bismarck, the Kurfurst is equipped with the hydroacoustic search radar to help detect incoming threats such as torpedoes and destroyers attempting to get close.

However, despite her impressive offensive and defensive assets, her size betrays her hard as she has THE worst AND largest turn radius out of all the tier 10's and a very long rudder shift time so do not expect to perform intensive evasive maneuvers when torpedo strikes are likely to happen. To boot, despite the protected scheme of the battleship, normal penetrations will still deal massive damage which is very dangerous even if the battleship is not citadeled, it can still guarantee a massive setback for any of your ventures in the match.

When you get to the Kurfurst, expect to sustain a load of heavy damage from all sources... A LOT OF IT... as you can do the same as well if you play her right with her ergonomics and armor fitting her well in getting fairly up close and personal to her peers.

Offensive and overwhelming, that is this battleship

Pros:

  • Heavier broadside than Montana due to her guns being an inch bigger
  • Also has the potential 1 salvo kill that was exclusive to Montana's own heavy broadside
  • Bustling AA suite aboard a ship her size
  • Fast at 30 knots
  • Extremely good turret traverse amongst her battleship tier peers
  • Incredible secondaries, comparable to Yamato
  • 28 second reload with 406mm guns
  • Impressive armor layout that protects the citadel
  • Unrivaled health pool
  • Has the hydroacoustic search
  • Heavily armored bow, almost impervious to hits
  • Extremely durable; can endure severe damage to either close the gap or to get away to heal
  • Ergonomics is similar to dreadnoughts; the closer she gets, the more dangerous she becomes
  • Fairly hard to citadel, especially when she gets close enough
  • Citadel is under the waterline
  • Best regen in-game with 549HP, even Yamato with 506HP/sec can't compare

Cons:

  • Longest ship in game with 313m length
  • Biggest turn radius in the game of 1050
  • Very long rudder shift
  • Questionable torpedo bulge
  • 32 second reload on 420mm guns
  • Turrets are easy to destroy with intense concentrated fire
  • Normal penetrations cause massive damage
  • Weak deck armor for her size (extremely large bow and stern)
  • Unfriendly ergonomics; requires the player to be extremely well-versed in dreadnought and post-dread gameplay
  • Very tempting target due to size; any ordnance such as dive bombers or all gun shells will guarantee a hit
  • Worse dispersion than Yamato and Montana
  • Shorter range compared to her battleship tier peers
  • Hydroacoustic search requires the battleship to be close to danger in order to detect danger
  • Incredibly vulnerable to aerial torpedo strikes and destroyer torpedo runs; a heavy escort of cruisers is usually required
  • Ranged firefights leave her vulnerable to plunging fire that connects to the citadel
