''Iron Duke'' remained on active duty for only a few more years; in 1930, the London Naval Treaty specified that the four ''Iron Duke''-class battleships be scrapped or otherwise demilitarized. ''Iron Duke'' was therefore converted into a gunnery training ship; her armour and much of her armament was removed to render her unfit for combat. She served in this capacity until the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, when she was moored in Scapa Flow as a harbour defense ship. In October, she was badly damaged by German bombers and was run aground to avoid sinking. She continued to serve as an anti-aircraft platform for the duration of the war, and was eventually refloated and broken up for scrap in the late 1940s. ''Iron Duke'' remained on active duty for only a few more years; in 1930, the London Naval Treaty specified that the four ''Iron Duke''-class battleships be scrapped or otherwise demilitarized.  +* ''Iron Duke'''s stat card shows her configuration as in 1939; her twin QF 5.25-inch (133 mm) dual-purpose gun that was mounted aft of 'Y' barbette that same year is missing (see historical gallery).
+* In 1939, ''Iron Duke'' was actually serving as an anti-aircraft platform. By then her armour and most of her armament had been removed.
+* ''Iron Duke'' is depicted with only one smokestack.

Iron Duke — British Tier V battleship.

The idea to equip battleships with heavy 152 mm secondary guns came about in 1909. The four Iron Duke-class battleships were similar to their predecessors but differed by more powerful secondary armament and larger dimensions. After commissioning in 1914, Iron Duke participated in World War I and was Admiral Jellicoe's flagship during the Battle of Jutland. In 1919, she joined the Mediterranean Fleet and took part in the intervention in Soviet Russia. In 1939, she was transferred to Scapa Flow. On October 17, 1939, the ship was damaged by a German air raid and scuttled.

Player Opinion

Performance

HMS Iron Duke is a Tier V British battleship. Like her Tier V contemporaries, Iron Duke boasts large caliber guns and thick armor. The main armor belt covers the majority of the hull which can help protect the ship when angling against large caliber guns. However, the armor will not protect the ship against broadside salvos.

Iron Duke is fitted with ten 343mm guns in a layout similar to König and New York . While Iron Duke’s armor piercing shells are often effective against cruisers and other lightly protected targets, they may struggle to deal damage against other battleships. When facing higher tiered or heavily angled battleships, captains should switch to high explosive shells. The high alpha damage and fire chance on the HE shells makes them quite effective at damaging targets that the AP shells would normally not harm. Additionally, Iron Duke suffers from a slow turret traverse speed. Captains should plan ahead and begin turning their guns before entering an engagement with enemy ships. In certain situations, it may also be quicker to turn the whole ship rather than wait for the turrets to traverse.

In addition to her main battery, Iron Duke carries a large secondary armament for her tier. While these guns are not as effective as some higher tier battleships’ secondaries, they can help fend off destroyers who sail too close to the ship. The secondary guns may also prove useful in close quarter engagements with other battleships due to the high fire chance they possess.

Pros:

  • High explosive shells have high maximum damage and fire chance.
  • The ship can fire all ten guns without needing to expose much of her side.
  • Powerful secondary armament for her tier.
  • The main armor belt covers a majority of the hull.

Cons:

  • The main guns traverse slowly at 72 seconds.
  • The AP shells may sometimes struggle to deal damage against enemy battleships.
  • Lower torpedo damage reduction than other Tier V tech tree battleships.
  • Slow top speed of 22.5 knots.

Research

Iron Duke has three modules to research: the hull, engine, and gun fire control system. Captains should first research the upgraded hull for the increased health and improved maneuverability it provides. Captains should next research the gun fire control system for the increased range before finally researching the ship’s engine module.

Optimal Configuration

Upgrades

Iron Duke has access to three upgrade slots. Captains should mount the following upgrades:

Commander Skills

For tier 1 skills, Expert Loader is the most useful option. This skill reduces the time needed to switch shell types if the main battery guns are already loaded. Priority target can also prove useful by alerting captains to how many ships are currently targeting them.

For tier 2 skills, Expert Marksman is recommended to reduce the turret traverse time. Captains looking to improve the surviability of the ship may also opt for High Alert or Jack of All Trades for the reduced consumable cool down.

For tier 3 skills, Superintendent is recommended for an extra charge of the Repair Party consumable. Basics of Survivability is also recommended to reduce the time required to repair fires, flooding, and module damage. Captains may also choose to take Basic Firing Training to improve the effectiveness of the anti-aircraft and small caliber secondary guns.

For tier 4 skills, Concealment Expert is recommended to reduce the ship’s detection radius, allowing captains to close in unnoticed. Fire Prevention is also recommended to reduce the risk of fire and maximum number of fires on the ship. Advanced firing training can be taken to increase the firing range of the secondary and anti-aircraft guns.

Consumables

Iron Duke has access to two consumables:

Mounting the premium variants of these consumables is recommended to decrease their cool down and improve the ship’s survivability.

Camouflage

Iron Duke does not have a premium camouflage purchasable with doubloons. Mounting Type 5 camouflage is recommended for its bonus to concealment. Other camouflages such as the Ocean Soul camouflage may also be used to boost the experience or credit gain per battle.

Signals

Iron Duke can mount eight signal flags simultaneously. Captains should mount India Delta flags (+20% to the amount of HP recovered when the Repair Party consumable is used.) to increase the amount of hit points the repair party consumable can recover. Sierra Mike flags (+5% to the ship's maximum speed.) are also recommended to increase the ship’s top speed. India Yankee flags (-20% to fire duration.) can be mounted to decrease the time needed to extinguish fires. Lastly, economic and special signal flags can be mounted to increase the credit and experience gain per battle.

Note: Use of the Juliet Charlie signal makes detonation impossible.
