? | Izumo (出雲 "Outward Cloud") was a preliminary design to the famous Yamato-class. In 1936, after Japan had left the League of Nations and renounced the Washington Naval Treaty, the Imperial Japanese Navy contacted leading naval engineer Yuzuru Hiraga to design a new battleship not bound by treaty limits. Hiraga drew experience from designing the Yubari, Fubuki, and Mogami classes to help him design the new battleship, designated A-140. In all, 24 preliminary designs were submitted to Naval Command for review, including an HMS Nelson-style, 16-inch gun armed battleship with a hybrid engine concept designated A-140-J2. However, due to advancements in fire-control methods and the failures of hybrid-engines in the submarine tender Taigei and the seaplane tender Mizuho, the plans were scrapped in favor of Hiraga’s 18-inch armed conventional layout, which would later become Yamato. | + | Izumo (出雲 "Outward Cloud" named for the Izumo province) was a preliminary design to the famous Yamato-class. Izumo — Japanese Tier IX battleship.
One of the draft designs for a "super battleship" concept, preceding the appearance of the Yamato-class battleships. This design featured heavy armor and a sufficiently high speed complemented by powerful main battery guns that were unconventionally placed in three turrets located at the ship's front end.

Player Opinion
Performance
Once considered by many to be among the worst Tier IX ships in the game, Izumo has seen a variety of improvements since the launch of World of Warships. While her stock hull still has mediocre secondaries, a weak anti-aircraft battery, and bad turning characteristics, the AP shell penetration of Hull (A) has been significantly improved, allowing her guns (at least) to remain competitive against the likes of Iowa and Friedrich der Große.
Additionally, the in-game text is somewhat misleading: Izumo’s armor is tricky to use; she is highly reliant on using her sharply-angled bow to deflect shots at the hull. Once Hull (B) is unlocked, she goes from "workable" to "good", with much better secondaries and AA. However, she remains vulnerable to plunging fire (due to the large amount of wide open deck) and the fully upgraded AA is not adequate enough to fend off air attacks without support from allies. Pointing her bow at enemies and reversing at mid range — similar to how many captains play Dunkerque, Iowa, and North Carolina — is a valid tactic in Izumo, and is quite effective against enemy AP rounds. Like all high tier battleships, she remains vulnerable to fire.Pros:
- Reasonably fast.
- Decent secondary battery (when they can fire).
- Accurate and good main battery when upgraded.
- Adequate AA suite.
- Decent hull armor along the front half of the ship.
- Small superstructure, meaning HE shells don't have a whole lot to hit.
- Great angling potential.
Cons:
- Large size: larger than Yamato!
- Worst concealment in the game.
- Large sections of armor ineffective against Tier 7-10 battleships at any range.
- Turret placement leaves ship extremely vulnerable to attacks in aft arc.
- Very weak stern.
- Secondaries only fire to the side and rear, making them near useless in the required play style of the ship.

Upgrades
Izumo`s two most viable choices of specialisation is either improving her main gun performance or her secondaries. Unfortunately, an Izumo specialising in her main guns will often be outclassed by an Iowa, and an Izumo focusing on her secondaries will often be outclassed by a Friedrich der Große — although she can beat Iowa in a brawl and outdo Friedrich der Große at range.
Main Gun Build: To maximise her main gun performance, Main Armaments Modification 1 is highly recommended to improve the surviveability of her main turrets, with Aiming Systems Modification 1 in slot 2 to improve the dispersion of Izumo`s guns, especially at long range. Finally, Main Battery Modification 3 is required for slot 3 to improve her rate of fire, with a sacrifice of turret traverse. However, you won't use your third turret a whole lot, and even then Izumo`s base turret traverse speed is actually quite good regardless. At the same time, Gun Fire Control System Modification 2 can be useful to help Izumo deal with her rival Iowa better, as Iowa’s range is considerably greater than Izumo’s.
Secondary Build: To improve her secondary armament, Auxiliary Armaments Modification 1 is recommended to improve the surviveability of your secondaries (and to better protect your AA guns). Secondary Battery Modification 2 is the prime choice for slot 2, to increase the range and decrease the dispersion of your secondaries, and finally Secondary Battery Modification 3 to increase the rate of fire of Izumo`s secondaries.
For Izumo`s other three slots, Damage Control System Modification 1 is an absolute must as Izumo is one of the largest ships - and largest targets - in the game, and she will come under fire repeatedly, so any reduction of damage is a welcome improvement. Damage Control System Modification 2 is arguably the most important module for slot 5, but both Propulsion Modification 2 or Steering Gears Modification 2 are viable, depending on playstyle. Finally, Target Acquisition System Modification 1 is the best choice for slot 6, as Concealment System Modification 1 is often less useful than being able to spot torpedoes at a greater distance.

Consumables
Players can equip the following consumables on Izumo: Damage Control Party, Repair Party, and a choice between Spotting Aircraft and Catapult Fighter. It is strongly recommended to take the Premium versions of Damage Control Party and Repair Party to maximize surviveability.
Camouflage
Type 1, 2, or 5 camouflage can be equipped for credits; Types 2 or 5 are recommended at a minimum to reduce the accuracy of incoming shells.
Players who wish to spend doubloons can equip Izumo with Type 19 camouflage that lowers her detection radius, reduces the accuracy of incoming shells, reduces her repair costs, increases her credit earnings, and increases the amount of experience she earns.
Signals
As with all battleships, Izumo comes with 8 signal flag slots. The three most important flags are India Delta, Juliet Yankee Bissotwo and India Yankee; all of which will improve your surviveability. If the captain goes with the Secondary Build, the addition of Mike Yankee Soxisix will further improve the performance of Izumo’s secondaries.
