The new cruiser was laid down in May 1915 at the Kaiserliche Werft shipyard in Kiel, launched in January 1916, and commissioned into the High Seas Fleet in November 1916. Armed with eight 15 cm SK L/45 guns, the ship had a top speed of 27.5 kn (50.9 km/h; 31.6 mph). | |

Karlsruhe — German Tier IV cruiser.
The next step in the development of German light cruisers was the introduction of an armor belt. The new class also featured a large displacement and improved seaworthiness. After completing crew training, the cruiser joined the 2nd Recon Squadron that was patrolling the German coast. The ship served as a scout and minesweeper escort. Following the surrender of Germany, the cruiser, along with other German ships, was deliberately scuttled in Scapa Flow on June 21, 1919. Karlsruhe descended to greater depths than the rest of the sunken ships and was never recovered.

Player Opinion
Performance
The Karlsruhe is expected to be an improvement from the Kolberg. However, while the guns can do sufficient damage for once, they still lack range. One is expected to be outranged by other cruisers and take moderate damage before they can get into range to retaliate. The torpedo armament of a double launcher on each side is pitiful compared to the other cruisers since it lacks the speed to do hit-and-run attacks. It has decent protection, but still can fall easily since the armor does little against HE shells. However, due to its inferiority compared to other light cruisers, it has earned the nickname "Garbage-ruhe" since it is well below the expectations that the Phoenix and Kuma have set, though at closer ranges the two may have a run for their money against this ship.
Despite this, a savvy captain will know to pick and choose his targets in this ship. Firing on a battleship early on is not recommended whatsoever as it draws attention that the Karlsruhe cannot withstand. The best bet is to pick off lower tier cruisers, and if no such targets are present, destroyers. Despite the small odds, remember you can launch four torpedoes on either side of the ship, and inexperienced players who try to stand still in fog will become sitting ducks. While the guns themselves wont guarantee massive damage to battleships, they can give other cruisers and destroyers a wallop per shell. Thus, when firing at your fast-moving targets near max range, fire your guns individually instead of all at once, this not only helps you gauge where to aim but also increases the odds that at least one shell will hit its mark.
Likely the most effective playstyle for this ship is to act as a counter-cruiser, getting as close as possible to same-tier or lower tier cruisers with some respecting distance to dodge torpedoes. In these situations firing a full broadside is much more sound as, due to the gun characteristics of this ship, it is VERY possible to land multiple citadel hits if aimed correctly. Although they do not deal as much damage as a battleship's guns would, the damage is high enough that if the enemy cruiser does not break off, they will find themselves a smoldering wreck if you find their soft spot. Combined with the Karlsruhe's solid armor, it makes it very difficult for her targets to deal that same damage back to her.
Even with her average speed, she is rather decent in turns for her size, and can sidewind her way around incoming torpedoes and shells given the right motions are made.Pros:
- First German cruiser with torpedoes.
- Great armor for a Tier IV cruiser, will shrug off AP rounds from same tier & lower tier Destroyers and Cruisers.
- Guns can actually deal moderate damage compared to the previous ones.
- Decent armor compared to other cruisers.
- If it gets close enough, a skilled captain can land repeated citadels on other same tier cruisers.
Cons:
- Shorter range than its competitors.
- Low speed in comparison to other light cruisers.
- Torpedoes are ineffective at long range due to the small quantity of them.
- While armor can deflect AP, HE shells can still do sufficient damage.
Optimal Configuration
Upgrades
Like Kolberg, Karlsruhe doesn't have a lot of room for customization. Captain's choice of Main Armaments Modification 1 or Magazine Modification 1 are recommended in Upgrade Slot 1; either Damage Control System Modification 1 or Propulsion Modification 1 are recommended in Upgrade Slot 4.
