?Kongo is one of the more fun battleships to play with, particularly when in her own tier. At her tier and anything within her matchmaking table she outranges because of her maxed out range of 21.2 km and with a scout plane active, the Kongo can have a range comparable to a Yamato that did not launch its spotting plane with a total of 25.44 km. She's also the second battlecruiser in the Japanese battleship line with Amagi being the last of it because after being in the tier III [[Ship:Kawachi|Kawachi]], Kongo makes you adapt to a newer style as she does not fully have the armor to get in all out salvofests with dreadnoughts such as her US and German Tier 5 counterpart New York and König, which has better armor but lower speed before going back to dreadnoughts again when you reach [[Ship:Fuso|Fuso]]. As a battlecruiser, you pay for that maneuverability with lighter armor protection. Presenting your broadside to any battleship opponent, even tier 3's, is very dangerous and will quickly get you sunk. Kongo can also see up to Tier 7 battleship opponents that are unlikely to bounce a shot at even extreme angles and fire enough of them to sink her in one salvo. At her tier however, she takes her pride as the fastest battleship along with her decent maneuverability which can ease the burden of performing evasive maneuvers against salvos or torpedoes. +''Kongo'' is considered to be one of the most enjoyable battleships in the game, especially towards the lower tiers. ''Kongo'' has by far the highest top speed of the battleships of Tier V, a strong, solid main armament of eight 14-inch guns in four twin turrets, far greater range than her contemporaries, good secondaries, and the most health of her tier. However, she's not the strongest in all suites - she's got the worst armor of her tier, with only 203mm of belt armour compared to ''[[New York]]''’s, ''[[Texas]]''’ and ''[[König]]''’s 356mm belt armor, and she has the least guns of her tier. These shortcomings, however, don't stop ''Kongo'' from being one of the most competitive battleships in the game tier-for-tier. ''Kongo'' must always be careful with how she positions herself; showing too much broadside to an enemy battleship can be a fatal mistake. ''Kongo'' excels at both ranged combat and can use her maneuverability to outdo enemy battleships at closer ranges. ''Kongo'' is the second of three battlecruisers/fast battleships in the Japanese battleship line, coming after ''[[Myogi]]'' and eventually leading to ''[[Amagi]]'' at Tier VIII.

? As Kongo is a Battlecruiser and needs to be able to dictate the terms of the engagement as she does not have a lot of armor, upgraded propulsion is the way to go. After this, you should get the B(formerly C) hull not for AA, but for her upgraded shells(like the Germans get with each hull upgrade as well) and a little bit faster turret traverse, and then the range upgrade. Without a C hull anymore, Kongo is a rather short grind these days. As with the propulsion upgrade, the range upgrade helps dictate the terms of the engagement, something that is quite important on a thinly armored Battlecruiser. Getting the range upgrade increases your maximum dispersion, but only by 17 meters which for a battleship is unnoticeable.+''Kongo'' is — effectively — a battlecruiser and needs to be able to dictate the terms of the engagement as she does not have a lot of armor. ?For her Equipment, as usual the Main Armaments Modification 1, improving the resilience of her main batteries, and the Damage Control Systems Modification 1, giving a minor improvement to her fire resistance and torpedo protection, should be fitted. ?Her captain, if carried over from previous ships, should already have either Basics of Survivability or Basic Firing Training, Expert Marksman, and either Vigilance, High Alert, or Superintendent. For her fourth skill, Advanced fire control, which extends the range of her AA and secondary batteries should be selected. If keeping her or outfitting her almost identical Arpeggio of Blue Steel counterparts, you can ignore Advanced Fire Control, and select among the lower skills, or alternatively select Manual Control for AA Armaments (which requires manual targeting to activate, or your long ranged AA guns won't even fire), which can be combined with the Basic Fire Control Skill and the AA Guns Modification 2 Equipment upgrade to give her fearsome AA capabilities that can shred aircraft squadrons at her tier and lower from long range. If you have the time to grind her or are bringing a captain from higher up the line, getting Concealment Expert reduces her detection range to 13.5 km (14 km for her ARP counterpart), and can make her quite flexible at fighting at medium ranges.+|Upgrades=<!-- write text about best upgrades below -->
+The recommended upgrades for ''{{#var:ship_name}}'' are as follows:
 +* '''Slot 1''': {{Main Armaments Modification 1}}<nowiki>*</nowiki>
 +* '''Slot 2''': {{Damage Control System Modification 1}}
 +* '''Slot 3''': {{Aiming Systems Modification 1}}<nowiki>*</nowiki>
 +
+'''Slot 1''' provides players with the first option in choosing a desired role. Typically, {{Main Armaments Modification 1}} is recommended to provide additional survivability to the main battery, but players who desire to specialize in the secondary or anti-aircraft armament should choose {{Auxiliary Armaments Modification 1}}.
 +
+'''Slot 3''' allows for further specialization. Generally, {{Aiming Systems Modification 1}} is recommended because it reduces shell dispersion of the main and secondary armaments. To increase the effectiveness of the anti-aircraft armament, mount {{AA Guns Modification 1}}. Players wishing to specialize for secondaries should mount {{Secondary Battery Modification 2}}.

Kongō — Japanese Tier V battleship.

When she was commissioned, Kongo was the most advanced battlecruiser in the world. She was the first among battlecruisers and battleships to be equipped with 356 mm main battery guns. Unlike previous Japanese dreadnoughts, Kongo received a thinner armor belt while her deck armor and torpedo protection were reinforced.

Player Opinion

Performance

Kongo is considered to be one of the most enjoyable battleships in the game, especially towards the lower tiers. Kongo has by far the highest top speed of the battleships of Tier V, a strong, solid main armament of eight 14-inch guns in four twin turrets, far greater range than her contemporaries, good secondaries, and the most health of her tier. However, she's not the strongest in all suites - she's got the worst armor of her tier, with only 203mm of belt armour compared to New York’s, Texas’ and König’s 356mm belt armor, and she has the least guns of her tier. These shortcomings, however, don't stop Kongo from being one of the most competitive battleships in the game tier-for-tier. Kongo must always be careful with how she positions herself; showing too much broadside to an enemy battleship can be a fatal mistake. Kongo excels at both ranged combat and can use her maneuverability to outdo enemy battleships at closer ranges. Kongo is the second of three battlecruisers/fast battleships in the Japanese battleship line, coming after Myogi and eventually leading to Amagi at Tier VIII.

Pros:

  • Great gun range: Reaching out to 21+ kilometers, she has the second highest range in the mid tiers after Fuso.
  • Impressive speed: Kongo can reach 30 knots, allowing her to keep up with cruisers and relocate if needed.
  • Decent agility: She is surprisingly maneuverable and can cover her turning circle quite quickly.
  • Good gun characteristics: her guns are accurate, powerful, and have decent penetration.
  • Feels like a modern battleship in a world of outdated WWI era ships.
  • Good firing angles.

Cons:

  • Low AA suite potency: Her AA suite will not do much against higher tier aircraft.
  • High detection range: She is easily seen at 16km, but not much of a problem, as she can fire out to 21 km.
  • Battlecruiser armor: Her weak armor is easily penetrated by battleship shells, though it can be partially overcome with angling.
  • Sluggish rudder shift time: It takes a long time for her to start turning compared to American battleships.
  • Being a mid-tier battleship, her dispersion is still somewhat high at longer range. This can be mitigated my installing Aiming System Modification 1.
  • Turret traverse is rather sluggish.

Research

Kongo is — effectively — a battlecruiser and needs to be able to dictate the terms of the engagement as she does not have a lot of armor. Upgrading her Propulsion module is first priority. After this, pick up Hull (B) for the upgraded main battery shells and a little bit faster turret traverse. The Fire Control System module upgrade can be saved for last.

Optimal Configuration

Upgrades

The recommended upgrades for Kongō are as follows:

Slot 1 provides players with the first option in choosing a desired role. Typically, Main Armaments Modification 1 (-20% to the risk of main battery becoming incapacitated. / +50% to main battery survivability. / -20% to main battery repair time. / -20% to the risk of torpedo tubes becoming incapacitated. / +50% to torpedo tubes survivability. / -20% to torpedo tubes repair time.) is recommended to provide additional survivability to the main battery, but players who desire to specialize in the secondary or anti-aircraft armament should choose Auxiliary Armaments Modification 1 (+100% to secondary battery survivability. / +100% to AA mounts survivability.).

Slot 3 allows for further specialization. Generally, Aiming Systems Modification 1 (-7% to maximum dispersion of main battery shells. / +20% to torpedo tubes traverse speed. / +5% to secondary battery maximum firing range. / -5% to maximum dispersion of secondary shells.) is recommended because it reduces shell dispersion of the main and secondary armaments. To increase the effectiveness of the anti-aircraft armament, mount AA Guns Modification 1 (+2 to number of explosions produced by salvos from medium- and long-range AA defenses.). Players wishing to specialize for secondaries should mount Secondary Battery Modification 2 (+20% to secondary battery maximum firing range. / -20% to maximum dispersion of secondary battery shells.).

Commander Skills

Consumables

Kongō can equip the following consumables:

Spending credits or doubloons on Damage Control Party II (When activated, instantly repairs fires, floods, and incapacitations, and prevents more for the duration.) and Repair Party II (While active, restores a fixed percentage of a ship's hit points each second.) are recommended to maximize survivability.

Camouflage

Type 1, 2, or 5 camouflage can be equipped for credits; Types 2 or 5 are recommended at a minimum to reduce the accuracy of incoming shells.

Signals

As with all battleships, Kongo comes with 8 signal flag slots. The three most important flags are India Delta (+20% to the amount of HP recovered when the Repair Party consumable is used.), Juliet Yankee Bissotwo (-20% to flooding duration.) and India Yankee (-20% to fire duration.), all of which will improve your survivability. Captains wishing to improve the performance of their secondary battery should consider the addition of Mike Yankee Soxisix (+5% to secondary battery maximum firing range. / -5% to maximum dispersion of secondary battery shells. / -5% to secondary battery loading time.).
