Leberecht Maass — German Tier VII destroyer.

The first destroyer of the next generation (Zerstörer 1934 type), which paved the way for the development of ships of this type in the German navy until the end of World War II. Thanks to large dimensions and robust design, she had excellent survivability.

Player Opinion

Performance

The newcomer at tier 7, the Leberecht Maass, or simply "Lebe" for short or "Maass" due to the team roster naming her as such, hails as a contender for a place in the sun with her fellow colleagues. If her predecessors T-22 and Ernst Gaede feel different to you, then this destroyer will feel nostalgic if you played with either Russian or American destroyers beforehand as she has the ergonomics and offensive capabilities to go toe to toe with her peers. Its also noteworthy that Lebe also has the highest health among her peers, edging out the Leningrad and Blyskawica in terms of this and her rudder shift is no slouch as well as this destroyer isn't that easy to hit with slower shells. Her gun layout of AB-XYZ single mount turrets ensure that you will constantly have broadside weight and if forced to show only the prow or the stern, you will always have sufficient guns to fight back and the guns she carries are more than enough to deal with her colleagues and the occasional cruiser that dared show their broadside towards the destroyer. Her torpedoes are also a thing to be impressed with as they do not behave like the torpedoes aboard her nation's cruisers and battleships fitted with torpedo tubes, but rather they have longer ranges of 8.5km as well as respectable speed to boot. As to German destroyers tiers up onwards, she also has access to the hydroacoustic consumable which helps greatly to detect incoming torpedoes as well as detect ships within smokescreens which, to a player oriented in bloodhound gameplay against hiding ships in smoke, is a very invaluable asset.

However, Lebe is not with her setbacks as her turrets traverse slowly than one would like, limiting her ability for reactive shooting, her fairly shorter smokescreen life that also limits her ability to use smoke offensively and a rather questionable turn radius for a destroyer as well as the concealment ratings.

Playing smartly and effectively is key to handling Leberecht Maass.

Pros:

  • Fast rate of fire, on par with Mahan.
  • Can deliver torpedo strikes from beyond her detection range.
  • Fast speed comparable to her peers
  • Largest health pool of all Tier VII destroyers.
  • Has access to the Hydroacoustic Search consumable.

Cons:

  • High shell arcs.
  • Somewhat slow turret traverse speed.
  • Large detection range for a destroyer.
  • Very short smokescreen duration limits offensive smoking ability.

Optimal Configuration

Upgrades

Like most destroyers, Leberecht Maass captains will want to plug Main Battery Modification 1 into Upgrade Slot 1 and Propulsion Modification 1 into Upgrade Slot 4. Maass’ handling characteristics make Steering Gears Modification 2 in Upgrade Slot 5 an attractive (and popular) choice; otherwise, captains should reach for Propulsion Modification 2.

With the 128mm guns as the sole armament choice, Main Battery Modification 2 is probably the best bet for Upgrade Slot 2 — especially if her commander has the Tier 1 skill Basic Firing Training — to provide the biggest boost to her turret traverse for a very small loss of reload speed.

Commander Skills

Consumables

Players can equip the following consumables on this destroyer: Damage Control Party, Smoke Generator, Engine Boost, and Hydroacoustic Search.

Camouflage

Type 1, 2, or 5 camouflage can be equipped for credits; Types 1 or 5 are recommended at a minimum to reduce detectibility range.

Players who wish to spend doubloons can equip Leberecht Maass with Type 17 camouflage that lowers her detection radius, reduces the accuracy of incoming shells, reduces her repair costs, and increases the amount of experience she earns.

Signals

The choice of which Signal Flags to mount will confer to the individual preference of each captain, and are subject to great variation, although there are certain flags which suit Destroyer gameplay better. Captains should mount India Yankee to decrease time to extinguish fires, mount November Foxtrot to decrease reload time of consumables, and mount Sierra Mike to increase the ship's maximum speed. To make their torpedoes more potent, captains should mount Juliet Whisky Unaone to increase chance of causing flooding and Juliet Charlie to mitigate risk to magazine detonation from mounting the former flag. If captains wish to buff their primary artillery, they are encouraged to mount Victor Lima + India X-ray to increase fire chance to HE shells.
