Lightning — British Tier VIII destroyer.

In comparison with her predecessors, the L-class ships turned out to be almost 200 tons heavier. To compensate for the weight of the new 120 mm guns with a 50-degree laying angle, quadruple torpedo tubes had to be installed. Throughout World War II, the destroyer had served in units with warships like Ark Royal, Valiant, and Warspite. Lightning sank on March 12, 1943, after taking two torpedo hits from German motor torpedo boats (Schnellboot) during an operation to intercept a German convoy.

Player Opinion

Performance

However, Lightning mounts its 4.7-inch (120 mm) guns in new enclosed turrets capable of high elevation angles, thus allowing them to serve as anti-aircraft guns as well. These turrets also have the pleasant side effect of allowing them to clear the rear structure, thus allowing the forward turrets to also traverse fully. This allows her to easily maneuver while keeping guns on target as she retreats.

Pros:

  • All gun turrets can traverse 360 degrees.
  • Superb concealment with 8 km torpedoes, allowing stealth torpedo attacks.
  • Superb acceleration and maneuverability.
  • Access to Hydroacoustic Search consumable.
  • High number of smoke charges with short cooldown.

Cons:

  • Short duration smoke discourages sitting in smoke and firing.
  • No Engine Boost consumable makes escape nearly impossible if caught in a bad position.
  • High shell arcs make long range hits against anything smaller than a battleship challenging.
  • Short ship detection range for the Hydroacoustic Search consumable.
  • Poor AA firepower.
  • 8km torpedoes may not be adequate in Tier X matches.

Research

Availability of researchable upgrades for Lightning is as follows:

  • Hull: Upgrade to Hull (B) (see above for cost). Research of this module unlocks progression to IX Jutland.
  • Gun Fire Control System: Upgrade to XXX for an extra 10% range on the main battery.

Camouflage

Type 1, 2, or 5 camouflage can be equipped for credits; Types 1 or 5 are recommended at a minimum to reduce detectability range.

Players who wish to spend doubloons can equip Lightning with Type 18 camouflage that lowers her detection radius, reduces the accuracy of incoming shells, reduces her repair costs, and increases the amount of experience she earns.

Signals

Lightning captains benefit from signal flags that enhance her main battery armament and torpedo armament, such as Victor Lima (+1% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber above 160mm / +0.5% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber below 160mm. / +4% chance of causing flooding.), India X-Ray (+1% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber above 160mm. / +0.5% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber below 160mm. / +5% to the risk of your ship's magazine detonating.), and Juliet Whiskey Unaone (+15% chance of causing flooding. / +5% to the risk of your ship's magazine detonating.). Sierra Mike (+5% to the ship's maximum speed.) is useful for increasing maneuverability.


Note: Use of the Juliet Charlie signal makes detonation impossible.
