Special

Marceau — French special premium Tier X destroyer.

In 1939, amid rising worldwide tensions, it was decided to continue building the leaders and increase the number of Mogador-class ships to six. Destroyer Marceau was never laid down, and construction works were suspended after France declared war on Germany. Due to the defeat of France in the summer of 1940, the ship was never built. If the construction had continued after the war, the ship could have received American 127 mm dual-purpose guns.

Player Opinion

Performance

Marceau is the coal alternative to Kleber, she shares Kleber's hull, but her differences warrant a completely different playstyle. She mounts the 127mm guns of the Colbert, at the tradeoff of reduced HE alpha damage and slower shell ballistics in exchange for higher AP alpha. She also enjoys a concealment advantage over Kleber, and has longer range torpedoes.

Marceau differs from her sister Kleber in many ways, primarily her guns, which boast the highest DPM of any tier 10 destroyer in the game. However, in exchange for these powerful guns, she suffers from the lack of a smokescreen consumable, and her torpedoes are rather underwhelming due to their poor range and reload.

This leads to a destroyer hunter type role, where she contests caps and runs down enemy destroyers with her extremely high speeds in order to make up for her poor concealment, while gunning them down with her powerful guns before quickly turning away and going dark to search for her next prey. She is a poor counter to cruisers due to her poor ballistics, and her extremely limited range means that unless the player takes upgrades, she sits dangerously close to battleships while trying to deal damage to them with her guns. Overall Marceau is best played as a destroyer hunter, while also making a mediocre torpedo boat and battleship farmer on the side.

For those more acquainted with the style of gunboat play, a different playstyle can be taken on by taking full advantage of Marceau's speed and damage output. At first, Marceau may hang back, using her speed and handling to fire at enemy battleships and cruisers with more sluggish shells that she can dodge. As the game progresses however, she can get closer to the battlefield, beginning to exhibit control of capture zones and hunt down enemy destroyers, as well as even rushing down battleships if the situation calls for it.

Overall this leads to a playstyle that rotates around her powerful guns, but is limited by her short range and poor ballistics. Marceau is a powerful destroyer with the potential to turn around games in the right hands.

Pros:

  • Highest HE damage per minute output of all tier 10 destroyers
  • Very fast turret rotation
  • Extremely high speed, topping out at over 55 knots when the Engine BoostWhile active, increases a ship's speed by a fixed percentage. consumable is active. Don't be fooled by the listed top speed of 44knts- the Marceau can have her unique 20% speed boost running for approximately 2/3rd of the battle with the correct modifications.
  • Good anti-aircraft defenses for a tier 10 destroyer, which combined with the defensive AA consumable allows her to ward off some tier 8 carriers, but she has difficulty with same tier aircraft carriers nevertheless
  • Torpedos have 1km range more and are stealthier than those found on other french destroyers, including on Kleber.

Cons:

  • Poor standard range of main battery guns, although this can be increased with the Advanced Firing Training captain skill, and the Gun Fire Control System Modification 2 module
  • Ballistics of her main battery guns quickly become poor at range, making firing at targets beyond 14 kilometers unrewarding
  • Torpedoes are relatively short-ranged, and their reload is very long. In addition, the torpedos are slower and deal less damage than that of Kleber.
  • Poor concealment for a tier 10 destroyer. Fully built, the minimum concealment value is 7 kilometers
