?Torpedo bombers are, after balance changes, weaker than Tier VIII USN carrier torpedoes and remain the weakest of all Midway assets. The damage per torpedo is extremely low, only dealing a maximum of 4233 damage per torpedo hit as opposed to 6467 at Tier VIII. Midway's torpedoes also have very low flood chance, players may have to land over 10 torpedoes in order to get a flood. However, to compensate for these shortcomings the Midway drops six torpedoes per attack, two torps from each plane. +'''Attack aircraft:'''

+Midway has a armored flight deck unlike earlier USN aircraft carriers which means she can tank damage from destroyers and cruisers for a while. She is really fast at 33 knots which means she can move to a different position when necessary. She is a very powerful aircraft carrier in the hands of a decent CV player and flexible with powerful planes although huge spotting range is often named as a disadvantage meaning that positioning is really important especially when the player doesn't do anything to lower her concealment. This all leads to a more forgiving gameplay compared to most other carriers, favoring brute force over stealth and allowing to follow allies for faster attacks and support.

Midway — American Tier X aircraft сarrier.

The largest U.S. Navy warship laid down during World War II. The huge size of this aircraft carrier allowed her to carry the largest air group, compared to her contemporary counterparts. Excellent torpedo protection, well-armored flight deck and powerful AA defenses made Midway-class ships virtually invulnerable to attacks from enemy aircraft.

The lead ship of the class, USS Midway (CV41), is now preserved as a military museum ship in San Diego, California.

Player Opinion

Performance

The pinnacle of the American aircraft carrier line, Midway is best suited for the flexible, fool-proof combat. Jack-of-all-Trades preset and parameters make her able to react to any threats quickly and counter them even if the original battle plan is falling apart.

While she has slightly fewer planes on deck compared to her Japanese counterpart Hakuryu, Midway's plane squadrons are smaller in size and have higher health per plane. These squadrons can withstand more anti-aircraft power due to their increased tankiness and can even plow through the thickest of AA to launch attacks.

Attack aircraft:

There are two different types of attack aircraft to use, similar to Lexington. Players get the option between HVARs and Tiny Tims. HVARs have many rockets per run, however, HVARs have low fire chance individually and have low penetration, so these rockets are best used on soft targets. Tiny Tims are the hard hitters, with high penetration and high fire chance. These rockets launch fewer rockets per attack with a slightly lower minimum distance, so it is easier to miss small targets like destroyers with these rockets. Whichever option to take depends on the player's preference; players that prioritize eliminating destroyers should take HVARs, while players that focus on dealing large amounts of damage should take Tiny Tims.

Torpedo bombers:

The torpedo bombers deal moderate damage with each attack dropping six torpedoes, which can deal very high damage to slow moving targets. Thanks to the repair consumable they can manage to make two runs on enemy battleships which can critically damage them. The individual torpedoes are weaker than RN or IJN torpedoes and also aim significantly slower than them but the ability to land a high number of them somewhat compensates for this fact. Due to the torpedo bombers being slow to aim, players should start lining up their torpedo runs from a distance in order to minimize movement during the attack and to allow the torpedo bomber aim to narrow. They are a weapon that shouldn't be underestimated just because of her low damage per torpedo.

Dive bombers:

Midway's dive bombers are the stars of the show. Known for hitting targets hard from destroyers to aircraft carriers, the dive bombers can both do high amounts of alpha damage as well as set fires. They drop the same amount of bombs per attack as Lexington, but get one more attack per squadron as well as more plane health. Dropping near the end of an attack run can greatly increase the accuracy of the bomb drop, however, this technique is very high in difficulty. When mastered, the bomb runs can do five-digit damage per run even to destroyers. With the unique upgrade, their damage is boosted even further at the cost of speed.

Ship:

Midway has a armored flight deck unlike earlier USN aircraft carriers which means she can tank damage from destroyers and cruisers for a while.

Pros:

  • Decent plane healthpool allowing better survivability.
  • All plane types can deliver very powerful strikes with very high damage every attack run.
  • All plane types are highly effective against all ship types from destroyers to aircraft carriers.
  • Very high fire chance and penetration with the Tiny Tim rockets and the AN-M66 bombs (Boosted even further with signals and demolition expert).
  • Torpedo bombers drop 6 torpedoes per attack run, making chances of torpedo hits more likely.
  • Very powerful AA suite, which is the best of all tier X carriers.
  • Decently durable for an aircraft carrier, with the best healthpool of its class and thick deck armor.
  • Armored flight deck, will bounce or shatter most DD and CA shells if they hit the flight deck.
  • High ship speed of 33 knots useful for repositioning when needed.
  • 30 HVAR rockets are dropped in per attack run allowing better accuracy.

Cons:

  • Massive target with poor concealment (Tied with Franklin D. Roosevelt).
  • Long rudder shift time and a large turning circle.
  • Torpedo bombers and dive bombers have poor speed (2nd worst at tier X).
  • Torpedo bombers have poor accuracy and a very long arming time (even stock torpedo bombers have better accuracy).
  • Individual torpedoes are weaker than those found on Lexington and Saipan.
  • Only 9 Tiny Tim rockets are launched per attack run and have questionable accuracy.
  • Individual HVAR rockets do low damage and have low fire chance unlike Tiny Tim rockets.

Research

Unlike most Tier X ships, Midway has upgrades to research, with one variable choice.

  • Attack Aircraft: Upgrade to F8F Bearcats for higher plane speed and slightly more health. Midway can choose between 127mm HVARs, with more rockets per drop, and Tiny Tims, with more damage, fire chance, and penetration. Bearcats armed with Tiny Tims have slightly more health than Bearcats armed with HVARs.
  • Torpedo Bombers: Upgrade to BTD Destroyers for higher plane speed, slightly more health, and a small squadron size boost. The number of planes for every attack is increased from 2 to 3, and the squadron gains one plane, going from 8 to 9. This gives Midway much more damage per drop. However, some players prefer to keep the Tier 9 Skyraiders, as they aim considerably faster and have better accurancy.
  • Dive Bombers: Upgrade to BTD Destroyers for higher plane speed, slightly more health, and a larger squadron. An additional attacking flight is added to each squadron, for a total of 12 planes, allowing for more attacks in a single flight. Deck reserves are increased accordingly, helping to improve Midway's plane economy. The larger squadron has a similarly large hitbox, so some additional care will be required when dodging flak.

Optimal Configuration

Upgrades

The recommended upgrades for Midway are as follows:

Upgrade Slot 5 offers players Concealment System Modification 1, which stacks with Concealment Expert and Camouflage to bring Midway’s surface detection down to a decent range of 13.5km. Players may also trade concealment for Flight Control Modification 1, which adds two additional planes on deck per plane type as well as accelerating plane replenishment time by 5%.

Upgrade Slot 6 is the 2nd main choice of upgrades with Midway. Due to the slow speed of aircraft, it is recommended to choose Flight Control Modification 2 : +5% cruising speed. to attack more often and potentially to save more planes from destruction while returning to the carrier. If you are okay with their stock speed, take Air Groups Modification 2 : +7.5% aircraft HP. instead.

Commander Skills

As a Tier X carrier, Midway has incredibly strong anti-aircraft armament, rivaling those of specialized AA cruisers.

Consumables

Midway can equip the following consumables:

Aircraft Carrier:

All aircraft carrier consumables are automatically activated.

Attack Aircraft:

Torpedo Bombers:

Bombers:

Camouflage

Type 1, 2, or 5 camouflage can be equipped for credits; Types 1 or 5 are recommended at a minimum to reduce detectability range.

Players who wish to spend doubloons can equip Midway with Type 20 camouflage that lowers her detection radius, reduces the accuracy of incoming shells, reduces her repair costs, increases her credit earnings, and increases the amount of experience she earns.

Signals

As with all other ships, Midway can mount eight signals at a time and has no risk of detonating. Players should mount Equal Speed Charlie London (for faster XP grinding / increased XP gain per battle), Zulu Hotel (when coupled with Equal Speed Charlie London greatly helps increase the speed of commander retraining), November Echo Setteseven (for better bomber self-defense against fighters and increased AA DPS), and Juliet Whiskey Unaone (to have a better chance at causing flooding and dealing damage via flooding). Players can also choose to equip the Dragon Flag for faster commander (re)training.

Note: Use of the Juliet Charlie signal makes detonation impossible.
