?PERFORMANCE SECTION GUIDELINES+
?1. Write a brief intro paragraph of 1-3 sentences.+
?2. Write 1-3 paragraphs of "meat". Talk about what the ship does well, what it doesn't, how it compares to same tier ships of the same type, how it compares to the previous ship in the tech tree, whatever. Try to avoid quoting vital statistics to players unless it is really relevant (i.e. concealment); they can see those in the sidebar on the right and don't need them read back. +
?3. Write a brief summary paragraph of 1-3 sentences highlighting the key takeaways from the paragraphs above.+

 +AA Sidebar Warning Insert
+On the outside, the Tier VI Premium American destroyer Monaghan appears identical to her tech-tree counterpart and sister, Farragut. For all intents and purposes, both ships possess two hull options to choose from: Monaghan’s Hull (A) and torpedo armament are a near-copy of Farragut’s, while Hull (B) removes two main battery guns in exchange for two racks of Mark 15 mod. 3 torpedoes just like those found on Benson; Farragut has the options between Hulls (A) and (B).
 +
+As noted, Monaghan’s stock configuration is slightly less to that of Farragut: Monaghan has armed with 4x1 127 mm guns and 2x4 centerline-mounted torpedoes with a range lower than that of the ships' detection by sea. Monaghan beats out Hull (B) Farragut in terms of Torpedo reload time, hit points, and AA armament, while Farragut retains a faster rudder and more main guns. Monaghan also has the ability to swap her Defensive AA Fire consumable for the Torpedo Reload Booster consumable. With her stock configuration, Monaghan will enjoy a play style identical to that of Farragut; firing from cover or smoke and doing opportunistic but risky torpedo runs on enemy ships.
 +
+Monaghan’s uniqueness comes into play with her Hull (B) configuration. In this configuration, she sacrifices her two rear-facing main guns for a quadruple and a double 40 mm Bofors mounts, and two double mounts amidships. She also gains the option of mounting longer range torpedoes, the same torpedoes found on the top hulls of Tier VIII destroyer Benson. Unlike the stock torpedoes, these are mounted in a 2x5 configuration with greatly increased range and damage at the loss of speed and ~50% slower reload. The long range torpedo option allows Monaghan to fire torpedoes from beyond her detection range, an ability not found in the tech-tree American destroyers until the Tier VII Mahan with her upgraded torpedoes.
 +
+Monaghan takes on a vastly different play style in this configuration. Captains will find that she plays more similarly to a Japanese torpedo-focused destroyer than an American destroyer. With only two guns, she will have little to no ability to contest capture points, and will be hampered in her ability to light fires on larger ships. Captains will also be forced to make a decision between a 30 second Torpedo Reload Booster consumable or Defensive AA Fire. Captains should take note that although Monaghan’s Hull (B) has increased AA, her AA even with Defensive AA Fire active will still be lack luster against higher-tier aircraft. Her Torpedo Reload Booster is also greatly inferior to the version found on Japanese destroyers.
 +
+In summary, Monaghan offers a fairly unique play style in comparison to her tech-tree counterpart and most other American destroyers, while still being compatible with captains of the American destroyer branch for accelerated training and credit earning. Her two hull options offer either a safe and familiar play style, or a more torpedo-focused style similar to that of other nations' destroyer lines.

?* +* AA guns are mainly for show and will rarely shoot anything down, even with Defensive AA Fire active.
?* +* Shell arcs make long-range targeting difficult.
?* +* Worse rudder shift than Farragut; may seem much slower to turn in comparison.
?* +* Hull (B) loses two main battery guns, leaving her badly outgunned by virtually every other destroyer in her tier spread.

 ===History=== ===History===
?USS Monaghan (DD-354) was the last ship built of the Farragut-class destroyer design. She was named for Ensign John R. Monaghan. Monaghan was laid down on November 21, 1933 at the Boston Navy Yard, and launched on January 9, 1935. She was sponsored by Miss Mary F. Monaghan, niece of Ensign Monaghan, and commissioned on 19 April 1935, with Commander R. R. Thompson in command. During the next few years Monaghan operated primarily in the North Atlantic, training US Navy personnel who served in World War II. Monaghan was present during the Pearl Harbor raid on December 7, 1941. She participated in the Battle of the Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway in 1942. Monaghan was sunk in a typhoon east of the Philippines in 1944.
 ====Design==== ====Design====
+After the end of World War I and the introduction of the Japanese Fubuki class, the USN had to develop a new class of Destroyers. The reactivation of all the entire World War I Destroyer flotilla however was not considered an acceptable solution, so drafts were made for a modern class. With the London Naval Treaty in 1930 the tonnage was restricted to not more than 1,500 tons per vessel.
 +
+After in-depth experiments and analysis of the old flushdeckers, including bending and bombing tests, it was decided to no longer pursue the flushdecker design but rather move to a bow that was one deck higher, giving the ships a higher freeboard for increased seaworthiness, and for the first time the Destroyers were supposed to be welded rather than riveted.
 +
+The result was a 104m long and 10.44m wide hull, displacing 1400 tons standard. The propulsion using steam could deliver 42,800 shaft horsepower and allow for a listed top speed of 36.5 knots, however during trials a speed of around 41 knots was achieved.
 +
+Initial armament of the Farragut consisted of five single mounts of the new 127mm/38 dual purpose gun (which would later prove to be one of the strongest AA guns of the war), which was directed by a Mark 33 Fire director for both anti-surface and anti-aircraft warfare. To save weight, only the two gun mounts on the foreship received a shield to protect the crew against splinter and heavy seas. Two quad 53.3cm torpedo launchers were mounted on the centerline of the ship, again an improvement over the older Destroyers, and the light AA consisted of only four .50 cal machine guns.
 +
+Throughout World War II it became clear that the threat from aircraft would grow more and more, thus the AA had to be strengthened on all ships including the destroyers of the Farragut class. This began with replacing the .50 cal machine guns with the modern 20mm Oerlikons, but in 1943 the ships had to sacrifice their third turret in exchange for the famous 40mm Bofors, which then filled the role of a medium range AA gun.
 +
+The eight destroyers were laid down between 1932 and 1934, with the first ones being launched and commissioned in 1935.

 ====Service==== ====Service====
+USS Monaghan was present at Pearl Harbor on the morning of 7 December 1941, as a part of DesDiv2. She was ordered out early in the morning to partake in A/S operations near the entrance, when a black smoke and overhead aircraft signaled to the ship that a battle was on. She directed her efforts in attacking the high altitude bombers that were harassing the stationed surface vessels, until she was ordered to sortie out with the rest of DesDiv2. While organizing, a submarine alert signal alerted her crew to an additional presence; a Japanese midget submarine. Due to the close proximity of the combatant, Lieutenant Commander Burford decided to ram the sub. A shock across the bow registered the impact and a subsequent depth charge launch thrashed the sub to the surface, where it rolled over and sank. She spent the rest of the engagement patrolling her sector outside the mouth of the harbor.

+During the Battle of the Coral Sea, Monaghan was part of Task Force 11 and was organized into an attack group comprised of other destroyers and cruisers tasked with engaging Japanese surface elements. As a part of Task Force 16, Monaghan found herself part of the US force at the Battle of Midway. As an escort element to USS Yorktown, she assisted her after she took a hit, and assisted in the hunt of I-168 after it had torpedoed Yorktown.
 +
+On 26 March 1943, Monaghan was one of the elements of DesRon4 at the Battle of the Komandorski Islands. Her main role during the surface engagement was to provide a screen for the main cruiser force, with gunfire and smoke cover. After USS Salt Lake City was badly damaged and had her engines knocked out, DesRon4 was ordered to launch a torpedo attack against the Japanese Fifth Fleet. Captain Riggs directed the attack directly for the cruisers with this command to “Get the big boys!” The destroyers charged steadfastly towards what they knew was near-suicide; unwavering their approach or gunfire until around 9,000 yards, when they turned abroad to release their torpedoes. The Japanese were caught off guard and decided to disengage; surprisingly Monaghan was unscathed.
 +
+As the US forces directed their attention to the island-hopping campaign in the summer of 1943, Monaghan found herself patrolling for enemy contacts around the Aleutians. In the early morning of 22 July, Monaghan was patrolling the area south of Kiska Island when a contact pinged some 14,000 yards away. An hour passed until she closed to 2,000 yards when Lieutenant Commander Horn gave the command to fire. Guided by radar-direction, Monaghan’s guns opened fire. In the thick of the inky night, the two foes engaged and disengaged multiple times; relying solely on the vision of radar. The duel ended when Monaghan cornered her foe against a difficult portion of rocky coastline, and she disengaged in fears of running aground. A daylight reconnaissance flight proved that the destroyer forced transport submarine I-7 aground; now a wreck after her crew scuttled her prior to abandon. Monaghan spent the next few months in the service of surface force escort all across the Pacific; be it carrier forces or destroyer escorts chasing Japanese submarines, from islands to islands; battle to battle.
 +
+On 18 December 1944 Monaghan was tasked with screening the vessels of the third fueling unit attached to Task Force 38. Suddenly a storm came raging down form the North; the flotilla of ships were caught in the wrath of a typhoon, which they discovered too late. Monaghan herself could not have been in a more precarious position: she had no water ballast on board. In the screaming maelstrom of water and wind, Monaghan – alongside fellow destroyers USS Spence and USS Hull – fell prey to the uncompromising force of nature. Three hundred men went down with the ship; only six survived the torrent alive.
 +
 +===== Historical Inaccuracies =====
+While Monaghan's A Hull is historical- showing her in the interim period with 8 Oerlikon mounts, while her 40mm Bofors guns were still in production- the B hull is a fictionalized version, as no American destroyer ever lost 3 of her 5 127mm guns for more light caliber AA. While the USN favored replacing 127mm guns instead of torpedo tubes far longer than a reasonable amount of targets for the torpedoes existed, it was not part of American doctrine to add more torpedo tubes, especially not on the hull of an elderly Farragut class, which already had some stability issues.

Special

Monaghan — American special premium Tier VI destroyer.

This Farragut-class destroyer's main battery consisted of dual-purpose guns. In 1942, one of the 127 mm guns was removed in order to install automatic anti-aircraft guns.

Monaghan was first available via American Crates after Update 0.7.5. She was first released for sale worldwide on 29 June 2018.

Player Opinion

Performance

Warning. The data presented in the AA Defense sidebar section may be incorrect.
Refer to the in-game Port screens for more useful data.

On the outside, the Tier VI Premium American destroyer Monaghan appears identical to her tech-tree counterpart and sister, Farragut.

As noted, Monaghan’s stock configuration is slightly less to that of Farragut: Monaghan has armed with 4x1 127 mm guns and 2x4 centerline-mounted torpedoes with a range lower than that of the ships' detection by sea. Monaghan beats out Hull (B) Farragut in terms of Torpedo reload time, hit points, and AA armament, while Farragut retains a faster rudder and more main guns. Monaghan also has the ability to swap her Defensive AA FireWhile active, the damage per second of large caliber anti-aircraft guns is increased. consumable for the Torpedo Reload BoosterWhen used, torpedo reload time is significantly reduced. consumable. With her stock configuration, Monaghan will enjoy a play style identical to that of Farragut; firing from cover or smoke and doing opportunistic but risky torpedo runs on enemy ships.

Monaghan’s uniqueness comes into play with her Hull (B) configuration.

Monaghan takes on a vastly different play style in this configuration. Captains will find that she plays more similarly to a Japanese torpedo-focused destroyer than an American destroyer. With only two guns, she will have little to no ability to contest capture points, and will be hampered in her ability to light fires on larger ships. Captains will also be forced to make a decision between a 30 second Torpedo Reload BoosterWhen used, torpedo reload time is significantly reduced. consumable or Defensive AA FireWhile active, the damage per second of large caliber anti-aircraft guns is increased.. Captains should take note that although Monaghan’s Hull (B) has increased AA, her AA even with Defensive AA FireWhile active, the damage per second of large caliber anti-aircraft guns is increased. active will still be lack luster against higher-tier aircraft. Her Torpedo Reload BoosterWhen used, torpedo reload time is significantly reduced. is also greatly inferior to the version found on Japanese destroyers.

In summary, Monaghan offers a fairly unique play style in comparison to her tech-tree counterpart and most other American destroyers, while still being compatible with captains of the American destroyer branch for accelerated training and credit earning. Her two hull options offer either a safe and familiar play style, or a more torpedo-focused style similar to that of other nations' destroyer lines.

Pros:

 • Most of the same qualities and upsides as non-premium counterpart Farragut.
 • Can mount Benson’s 9.2km range torpedoes (at the cost of two less turrets).
 • Can equip the Torpedo Reload BoosterWhen used, torpedo reload time is significantly reduced. consumable.
 • Can equip both the Engine BoostWhile active, increases a ship's speed by a fixed percentage. and Defensive AA FireWhile active, the damage per second of large caliber anti-aircraft guns is increased. consumables (unlike Farragut, which must select one or the other).
 • Decent rudder shift.
 • Better concealment than Farragut.

Cons:

 • AA guns are mainly for show and will rarely shoot anything down, even with Defensive AA FireWhile active, the damage per second of large caliber anti-aircraft guns is increased. active.
 • Shell arcs make long-range targeting difficult.
 • Worse rudder shift than Farragut; may seem much slower to turn in comparison.
 • Hull (B) loses two main battery guns, leaving her badly outgunned by virtually every other destroyer in her tier spread.

Research

As a premium ship, Monaghan doesn't have any upgrades to research.

Optimal Configuration

Upgrades

The recommended upgrades for Monaghan are as follows:

Slot 1 provides a choice between two generally useful options. Since the primary armament is dual purpose, Main Armaments Modification 1 -20% to the risk of main battery becoming incapacitated. / +50% to main battery survivability. / -20% to main battery repair time. / -20% to the risk of torpedo tubes becoming incapacitated. / +50% to torpedo tubes survivability. / -20% to torpedo tubes repair time. is recommended, even for those who intend to specialize in anti-aircraft duties. For a reduced chance of detonation, players may choose to mount Magazine Modification 1 : -70% risk..

Slot 3 offers two viable upgrades. The first is Aiming Systems Modification 1 : -7% main battery dispersion. / +20% torpedo tubes traverse speed. / +5% secondary battery firing range. / -5% secondary battery dispersion., which will boost Monaghan’s ship-to-ship combat performance. Players wishing to specialize in anti-aircraft duties should mount AA Guns Modification 1 +20% reduction in the preparation time of the priority AA sector..

Commander Skills

Players have an interesting choice regarding commander skills for the Monaghan, depending on the hull choice preferred. The first hull is greatly complimented by commander skills that buff the guns, survivability, and those which help Monaghan to fight other destroyers. The second hull benefits from skills boosting the power of her torpedoes, as that is the primary focus of this set-up. This allows for quite a bit of versatility in her commander skill choices.

Consumables

Monaghan can equip the following consumables:

Captains looking to improve Monaghan’s torpedo abilities should mount Torpedo Reload BoosterWhen used, torpedo reload time is significantly reduced. over Defensive AA FireWhile active, the damage per second of large caliber anti-aircraft guns is increased.. Mounting premium versions of Damage Control PartyWhen activated, instantly repairs fires, floods, and incapacitations, and prevents more for the duration. and Smoke GeneratorWhile active, generates a smoke screen that blocks line-of-sight for both enemies and teammates. is recommended to reduce their reload time.

Camouflage

As a premium ship, Monaghan comes with Default permanent camouflage and a set of permanent combat bonuses.

Signals

Monaghan is suited to signals that benefit destroyers, such as Sierra Mike (+5% to the ship's maximum speed.) and November Foxtrot (-5% reload time on all consumables.. As a premium, Monaghan is also decently suited for using economic flags to earn credits and XP, but as she is only Tier VI, one may want to save the flags for higher tiered ships.

Note: Use of the Juliet Charlie signal makes detonation impossible.
