Montana — American Tier X battleship.
The Montana class was intended as a successor to the Iowa-class battleships: They were larger, better armored, and more heavily armed. Their armament was supposed to consist of twelve 406 mm guns housed in four triple-gun turrets. Preliminary design work began before the U.S. entered World War II. The attack on Pearl Harbor delayed the construction of battleships, and the success of aircraft carriers in the Battle of the Coral Sea and Battle of Midway led the U.S. Navy to abandon the Montana class in favor of aircraft carriers, assault ships, and anti-submarine ships.

Player Opinion
Performance
Often being called as the "Yamato killer" for the US Navy, the Montana at first glance is basically a supersized Iowa with an additional triple mount turret and having an improved armor layout. Her offense capability relies on her heavy broadside to smash enemy battleships or destroy anything smaller should the rounds connect apart from her sound AA suite that protects her from aerial strikes but her mobility and ergonomics suffer as a result. Her speed that came from the 30 knots of the Iowa is lessened at 27-28 knots and her rudder shift may at times prove adverse to very fluid situations.
Pros:
- 12 guns generally means that something will hit even if your aim is slightly off .
- Best AA suite in the USN battleship line.
- Quick turret traverse speed.
- Better Alpha damage than Yamato.
- Faster than Yamato (30 kts compared to 27)
Cons:
- Uses same guns as the Iowa, no real upgrade for a tier up.
- Worse TDS than the Yamato.
- Although the AA guns are good, they will still have a hard time killing more than a few upgraded tier 10 bombers, if you do run into any CV's at all.
- The AA suite on the ship dies very quickly to HE leaving you vulnerable to carriers.
- Shorter range compared to Yamato, mounting the range increasing module does not help matters with her brow raising dispersion.
- Worse dispersion than Yamato.
- Citadel size is 50% bigger than Yamato.
- Can be penetrated by the Yamato even with the harshest angling.
- Overall, in the games current state, the Montana does not typically beat a Yamato in a 1 on 1 duel.
