 ===History=== ===History===
+The ''Nagato-class'' Battleships were the last pair of battleships build by the Japanese Navy before the global hiatus on capital ship construction due to the ratification of the Washington and subsequent London naval treaties. As such, the ''Nagato-class'' is seen as the culmination of all the experience learned by the Japanese Navy in dreadnought design and construction up to the end of World War I.

?Nagato (長門), named for Nagato Province, was a dreadnought battleship built for the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) during the 1910s. The lead ship of her class, she carried supplies for the survivors of the Great Kantō earthquake in 1923. The ship was modernized in 1934–36 with improvements to her armor and machinery and a rebuilt superstructure in the pagoda mast style. Nagato briefly participated in the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937 and was the flagship of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto during the attack on Pearl Harbor. She covered the withdrawal of the attacking ships and did not participate in the attack itself.<br />+Under the lead of the famed Hiragana Yuzuru, construction of the ''Nagato-class'' began in 1916. By now, Japan was a steadfast growing naval power and wanted their designs to reflect such a status. As such, from the very genesis, the ''Nagato-class'' were set to be first-rate dreadnoughts; competitive amongst the offerings of the other navies, namely the ''[[Colorado]]
?Other than participating in the Battle of Midway in June 1942, where she did not see combat, the ship spent most of the first two years of the Pacific War training in home waters. She was transferred to Truk in mid-1943, but did not see any combat until the Battle of the Philippine Sea in mid-1944 when she was attacked by American aircraft. Nagato did not fire her main armament against enemy vessels until the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944. She was lightly damaged during the battle and returned to Japan the following month. The IJN was running out of fuel by this time and decided not to fully repair her. Nagato was converted into a floating anti-aircraft platform and assigned to coastal defense duties. She was attacked in July 1945 as part of the American campaign to destroy the IJN's last remaining capital ships, but was only slightly damaged. In mid-1946, the ship was a target for nuclear weapon tests during Operation Crossroads. She survived the first test with little damage, but was sunk by the second.+-class'' Battleships that were being built by the US. They were meticulous from the beginning; delaying draft completion to 1917 in order to incorporate the lessons learned from the Battle of Jutland during World War I. What emerged were the most advanced battleships afloat in the World.
 +
+The Japanese determined that high-speed was an integral asset that makes battleships an effective weapon, as such, ''Nagato-class'' were designed to be the fastest battleships in the World. It was decided to fit no less than 21 Kampon boilers: 15 oil-fired and 6 mix-fired. They fed into 4-geared turbines that each powered a single screw. The generated 80, 000 shaft horsepower propelled the ships to above 26 knots; faster than her competitors. But this was not a specification the Navy boasted; instead electing to keep the true speed a guarded secret. In fact, the US navy didn’t know the true speed of the class until well into the late 1930s.
 +
+In electing to focus on the propulsion, weight had to be saved from the armouring. Ergo, the Japanese opted to implement the “all-or-nothing” armour principle that was championed by the US; maximal armour to the vital areas whist non-critical surfaces receives minimal armour. The main belt and the barbette rings received 12-inches in armour, whilst the conning tower and the turret faces received 14-inches and 18-inches in armour, respectively. While this is sufficient to rival other battleships of the period it was a fact that British and US battleships all had greater armouring; belt armours exceeding 13-inches for instance.
 +
+After experimentation with 6-turret designs, the designers decided to revert back to a quadruple turret design; determining this configuration to be the most effective. But in order to not decrease overall firepower by reducing 12-guns to just 8, the calibre of rifle was increased from the traditional 14-inch to 16-inches; in fact, the ''Nagato-class'' battleships were the first ships to mount 16-inch naval rifles. To supplement the primary artillery, 20 5.5-inch casement guns were added to the hull. Interestingly, the ''Nagato-class'' retained the Japanese tradition of fitting torpedo tubes to their battleships. Historically 8 in total were added; 4 above water and 4 submerged.
 +
+''Nagato'' (長門, named for Nagato Province) is the lead ship of the class, built at the Naval Arsenal, in Kure. She was laid down 28 August 1917, launched 9 November 1919 and completed 25 November 1920.
 +
+The ''Nagato-class'' underwent a modernization in the late 1920s and a reconstruction in the 1930s to keep the designs combat-capable. During the 1920s modernization, the first funnel was replaced with a serpentine funnel with a raked-top in order to attempt to fix the issue of the superstructure being occluded with smoke; the very funnel seen in-game. Furthermore, torpedo tubes were traded-in for anti-aircraft artillery, in order to counter the growing threat of aircraft. The 1930s reconstruction proved to be a more extensive overhaul. The iconic 7-masted superstructure was replaced with a pagoda-mast style design, and the first funnel was removed altogether. The old boilers were replaced; the overall number was also reduced to just 10. Furthermore, torpedo bulges were introduced. To mitigate the loss in ship speed due to the added weight, the length of the battleships were increased. Finally a catapult was added to launch scout planes off the deck.

?In the game, Nagato's "stock" hull is how she appeared before the first refit, hull B represents said first refit and during the early days of World War 2, and hull C represents her late war refits which gave the battleship something to work with later on.

Nagato — Japanese Tier VII battleship.

The Nagato-class ships were the first battleships fully designed and built in Japan. Their 410 mm guns were developed in response to the British 381 mm ones. The ships' speed also increased compared to their predecessors. During the Pearl Harbor attack, Nagato was Admiral Yamamoto's flagship; she also participated in the Battles of Midway and the Solomon Islands. The battleship was damaged during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, and after the war ended, she was transferred to the U.S. as part of reparations.

Player Opinion

Performance

Nagato is the end stage for all the dreadnoughts of the Japanese battleship line. Her guns change from the 14 inch guns of the Kongo and Fuso into the mighty 16.1 inch (410mm) guns she carries in four dual mount turrets, and her handling is quite impressive for a dreadnought, enabling you to be a functional firing platform and ship of the line. The number of guns she carries is a drastic reduction from the broadside of Fuso and their slightly longer reload time and narrower spread means that accurately firing them, which should be honed by your experience with the battleships that preceded her, is critical. However, these guns make her a serious threat to the heavily armored American dreadnoughts that have been tough to crack with the earlier 14 inch guns. She also has a very surprising quick firing secondary battery that unload at a range not really expected for most secondary guns to fire at, although her armor is lacking in some places and she can take heavy damage from enemy battleship fire. Upgraded with the forth tier Skill Manual Fire Control for Secondary Armament (which requires active targeting to use) that greatly reduces their dispersion, they can be lethal to destroyers that linger around her for too long. Her health pool is massive and she can soak up a lot of punishment, though fire and flooding, which deal damage that is percentage based, will consequently bleed large amounts of her health, and her torpedo protection is not that great. Her armor, while being the strongest among the mid Tier battleships of Japan, is weaker than her other nation Tier 7 counterparts, and her citadel is quite vulnerable, so she will be needing this prodigious health pool to keep fighting. Upgrading her to her top hull gives her a respectable AA suite and enhanced armor protection, and turns her into the powerful dreadnought that is worthy to be called one of the Big Seven of the Washington Naval Treaty.

The key to doing well in Nagato is to keep firing. Due to the lower DPM, having a good situational awareness of good targets of opportunity such as low health warships, or ships that show you the flat side is an absolute must. Maintaining a minimum of 9km distance from American, but particularly German battleships is also a must, as while the Nagato has a good secondary armament, it won't come off the better in a close range gun duel against Gneisenau`s, particularly since they also have torpedoes.

Nagato can be a very rewarding battleship to have a three battleship platoon, with as she can provide long ranged fire support for the platooning battleships. Its also possible to platoon with a destroyer that can spot for the Nagato.

Pros:

  • Decent speed, impressive handling and good ergonomics for a dreadnought
  • 410mm guns have fairly good accuracy and penetration, and the highest damage in her tier.
  • Superior main battery range to her American and German tier counterparts
  • Insane fast loading secondary batteries that have a high shell volume which may give the impression the battleship cannot be closed in upon
  • Secondary batteries become dangerous when upgraded with the right Captain's Skills
  • Decent rudder shift time
  • Highest HP pool at her tier

Cons:

  • Armor is quite weak, and citadel is quite vulnerable, though this can be mitigated by angling and good positioning
  • AA suite is subpar, with most of her AA DPS being concentrated at medium range
  • Despite the guns being rather accurate, the dispersion itself is sometimes wonky at long-range
  • Slow gun reload time leads to one of the worst DPM in its tier, making her reliant on getting good solid hits and citadel penetrations for damage
  • Torpedo protection is not so effective
  • Weak armor protecting her rudder
  • Fairly high detection range

Research

Nagato starts out as a slow, vulnerable ship, with quite weak armor and a nonexistent Anti-Aircraft suite. Her guns also seem inaccurate, and unwieldy compared to the greater amount of guns American battleships have. Upgrading to her Hull B is a priority, as it not only increases her AA and torpedo protection, but gives her a huge boost in health and makes her more resilient to citadel penetrations. More importantly, it makes her guns more accurate. Her propulsion upgrade can follow next, giving a minor boost in speed that slightly increases her turning rate in a full turn and makes her more comfortable to play. Her final upgrade can then be pursued, giving her more effective AA protection.

Optimal Configuration

Upgrades

Nagato is known as the battleship which boasts the best guns and the heaviest secondary broadside of her tier. Players can opt to either improve the handling of her main guns, or upgrade her fearsome secondary armament.

Main Gun Build: To focus on improving Nagato`s main guns, Main Armaments Modification 1 is a must as Nagato`s turrets can take critical damage fairly regularly, especially in close quarters. While it says that Nagato has the highest maximum dispersion on her main guns, maximum dispersion is taken from the maximum range, and Nagato has the highest range of her tier, meaning Nagato is actually the most accurate battleship of her tier. Aiming Systems Modification 1 is an absolute must for this build to further improve her accuracy, as Nagato suffers the longest reload of her tier, making Main Battery Modification 2 the far less viable choice, Nagato can't afford to sacrifice her reload speed.

Secondary Build: Nagato comes with a powerful array of quick-firing secondaries, most of which fire Armor Piercing, being especially lethal to enemy cruisers in close quarters. To upgrade these secondaries, Auxiliary Armaments Modification 1 will both increase the surviveability of her secondaries and her AA armament. Secondary Battery Modification 2 is the must-have for this build, as the additional 20% secondary range added onto the benefits of the commander skill Advanced Firing Training and the signal flag Mike Yankee Soxisix will buff the range of Nagato`s secondaries to an impressive 7.6km, and the -20% dispersion plus the -60% from Manual Fire Control for Secondary Armament and the -5% from Mike Yankee Soxisix will give these secondaries a total of -85% maximum dispersion, making them brutally accurate and adept at dealing with enemy ships at close quarters with ease.

For slots 3 and 4, surviveability is prioritised with Damage Control System Modification 1 for slot 3 and Damage Control System Modification 2 for slot 4. Nagato will rarely have her engines or steering knocked out, she doesn't have much trouble accelerating to her top speed of 25 knots and, surprisingly, Nagato has the best rudder shift time of the tier seven battleships.

Commander Skills

Consumables

Players can equip the following consumables on Nagato: Damage Control Party, Repair Party, and a choice between Spotting Aircraft and Catapult Fighter. It is strongly recommended to take the Premium versions of Damage Control Party and Repair Party to maximize surviveability.

Camouflage

Type 1, 2, or 5 camouflage can be equipped for credits; Types 2 or 5 are recommended at a minimum to reduce the accuracy of incoming shells.

Players who wish to spend doubloons can equip Nagato with Type 17 camouflage that lowers her detection radius, reduces the accuracy of incoming shells, reduces her repair costs, increases her credit earnings, and increases the amount of experience she earns.

Signals

As with all battleships, Nagato comes with 8 signal flag slots. The three most important flags are India Delta, Juliet Yankee Bissotwo and India Yankee; all of which will improve your surviveability. If the captain goes with the Secondary Build, the addition of Mike Yankee Soxisix will further improve the performance of Nagato’s secondaries.
