?Nagato is the end stage for all the dreadnoughts of the Japanese battleship line. Her guns change from the 14 inch guns of the Kongo and Fuso into the mighty 16.1 inch (410mm) guns she carries in four dual mount turrets, and her handling is quite impressive for a dreadnought, enabling you to be a functional firing platform and ship of the line. The number of guns she carries is a drastic reduction from the broadside of Fuso and their slightly longer reload time and narrower spread means that accurately firing them, which should be honed by your experience with the battleships that preceded her, is critical. However, these guns make her a serious threat to the heavily armored American dreadnoughts that have been tough to crack with the earlier 14 inch guns. She also has a very surprising quick firing secondary battery that unload at a range not really expected for most secondary guns to fire at, although her armor is lacking in some places and she can take heavy damage from enemy battleship fire. Upgraded with the forth tier Skill Manual Fire Control for Secondary Armament (which requires active targeting to use) that greatly reduces their dispersion, they can be lethal to destroyers that linger around her for too long. Her health pool is massive and she can soak up a lot of punishment, though fire and flooding, which deal damage that is percentage based, will consequently bleed large amounts of her health, and her torpedo protection is not that great. Her armor, while being the strongest among the mid Tier battleships of Japan, is weaker than her other nation Tier VII counterparts, and her citadel is quite vulnerable, so she will be needing this prodigious health pool to keep fighting. +Nagato is the end stage for all the dreadnoughts of the Japanese battleship line.  Upgrading her to her top hull gives her a respectable AA suite and enhanced armor protection, but be warned: even upgraded, Nagatos AA is still weaker than those of the other battleships at her tier, meaning that enemy aircraft will likely focus their attentions on her. This, coupled with her sheer length (100 feet longer than Colorado) and substandard torpedo protection, makes Nagato an especially tempting target for torpedo bombers. When in a game with a higher-tier CV, a Nagato captain would be well-advised to group up with other ships with strong AA. Upgrading her to her top hull gives her a respectable AA suite and enhanced armor protection, but be warned: even upgraded, Nagatos AA is still weaker than those of the other battleships at her tier, meaning that enemy aircraft will likely focus their attentions on her. Nagato — Japanese Tier VII battleship.

Nagato had long remained the most powerful warship in the Imperial Japanese Navy. She had good armor and carried 410 mm main battery guns. In the 1930s, the ship was modernized to receive more powerful torpedo protection.

Player Opinion

Performance

Nagato is the end stage for all the dreadnoughts of the Japanese battleship line. Her guns change from the 14 inch guns of the Kongo and Fuso into the mighty 16.1 inch (410mm) guns she carries in four dual mount turrets, and her handling is quite impressive for a dreadnought, enabling you to be a functional firing platform and ship of the line, although her armor is lacking in some places and she can take heavy damage from enemy battleship fire. The number of guns she carries is a drastic reduction from the broadside of Fuso, and their slightly longer reload time and narrower spread means that accurately firing them (which should be honed by your experience with the battleships that preceded her) is critical. However, these guns also make her a serious threat to the heavily armored American dreadnoughts that have been tough to crack with the earlier 14 inch guns. She also has a very surprising quick firing secondary battery that unload at a range not really expected for most secondary guns to fire at, and if upgraded with the forth tier Skill Manual Fire Control for Secondary Armament (which requires active targeting to use) that greatly reduces their dispersion, they can be lethal to destroyers that linger around her for too long.

Upgrading her to her top hull gives her a respectable AA suite and enhanced armor protection, but be warned: even upgraded, Nagato's AA is still weaker than those of the other battleships at her tier, meaning that enemy aircraft will likely focus their attentions on her. This, coupled with her sheer length (100 feet longer than Colorado) and substandard torpedo protection, makes Nagato an especially tempting target for torpedo bombers. When in a game with a higher-tier CV, a Nagato captain would be well-advised to group up with other ships with strong AA.

The key to doing well in Nagato is to keep firing. Due to the lower DPM, having a good situational awareness of good targets of opportunity such as low health warships, or ships that show you the flat side is an absolute must. Maintaining a minimum of 9km distance from American, but particularly German battleships is also a must, as while the Nagato has a good secondary armament, it won't come off the better in a close range gun duel against Gneisenau, particularly since they also have torpedoes.

Nagato can be a very rewarding battleship to have a three battleship platoon, with as she can provide long ranged fire support for the platooning battleships. Its also possible to platoon with a destroyer that can spot for the Nagato.

Pros:

 • Decent speed, impressive handling and good ergonomics for a dreadnought.
 • 410mm guns have fairly good accuracy and penetration, and the highest damage in her tier.
 • Superior main battery range to her American and German counterparts.
 • Fast-loading secondary batteries that have a high shell volume.
 • Secondary batteries become dangerous when upgraded with the right Commander Skills.
 • Decent rudder shift time.
 • Highest HP pool at her tier.
 • Torpedo Bulge extends to high above the waterline, providing slight protection from smaller shells at close range.

Cons:

 • Armor is quite weak and citadel is quite vulnerable, though this can be mitigated by angling and good positioning.
 • Anti-aircraft suite is subpar, with most of her AA damage being concentrated at medium range.
 • Despite the guns being rather accurate, the dispersion itself is sometimes wonky at long range.
 • Slow gun reload time compared to her contemporaries at Tier VII makes her reliant on getting good solid hits and citadel penetrations for damage.
 • Torpedo protection is not so effective.
 • Weak armor protecting her rudder.
 • Fairly high detection range.
 • Same DP secondaries as Kongo, with most of the guns firing AP shells.

Research

Nagato starts out as a slow, vulnerable ship, with quite weak armor and a nonexistent anti-aircraft suite. Her guns also seem inaccurate, and unwieldy compared to the greater amount of guns American battleships have. Upgrading to her Hull B is a priority, as it not only increases her AA and torpedo protection, but gives her a huge boost in health and makes her more resilient to citadel penetrations. More importantly, it makes her guns more accurate. Her propulsion upgrade can follow next, giving a minor boost in speed that slightly increases her turning rate in a full turn and makes her more comfortable to play. Her Fire Control upgrade can then be pursued, giving her more effective range with her guns.

If the player instead wishes to grind in co-op, taking propulsion first may be suggested.

Optimal Configuration

Upgrades

Nagato is known as the battleship which boasts the best guns and the heaviest secondary broadside of her tier. Players can opt to either improve the handling of her main guns, or upgrade her fearsome secondary armament.

Main Gun Build: To focus on improving Nagato`s main guns, Main Armaments Modification 1 is a must as Nagato`s turrets can take critical damage fairly regularly, especially in close quarters. While it says that Nagato has the highest maximum dispersion on her main guns, maximum dispersion is taken from the maximum range, and Nagato has the highest range of her tier, meaning Nagato is actually the most accurate battleship of her tier. Aiming Systems Modification 1 is an absolute must for this build to further improve her accuracy, as Nagato suffers the longest reload of her tier, making Main Battery Modification 2 the far less viable choice, Nagato can't afford to sacrifice her reload speed.

Secondary Build: Nagato comes with a powerful array of quick-firing secondaries, most of which fire Armor Piercing, being especially lethal to enemy cruisers in close quarters. To upgrade these secondaries, Auxiliary Armaments Modification 1 will both increase the survivability of her secondaries and her AA armament. Secondary Battery Modification 2 is the must-have for this build, as the additional 20% secondary range added onto the benefits of the commander skill Advanced Firing Training and the signal flag Mike Yankee Soxisix will buff the range of Nagato`s secondaries to an impressive 7.6km, and the -20% dispersion plus the -60% from Manual Fire Control for Secondary Armament and the -5% from Mike Yankee Soxisix will give these secondaries a total of -85% maximum dispersion, making them brutally accurate and adept at dealing with enemy ships at close quarters with ease.

Be warned, however, that since Nagato`s secondaries are mostly AP-firing, they will have problems damaging enemy battleships.

For slots 3 and 4, survivability is prioritized with Damage Control System Modification 1 for slot 3 and Damage Control System Modification 2 for slot 4. Nagato will rarely have her engines or steering knocked out, she doesn't have much trouble accelerating to her top speed of 25 knots and, surprisingly, Nagato has the best rudder shift time of the Tier VII battleships.

Commander Skills

Following the general battleship build, Nagato can go for a number of viable tier 1 skills, since none of them have a decisive advantage over the other. The Direction Center for Catapult Aircraft sends up an additional catapult aircraft when the catapult aircraft consumable is used, and can bolster Nagato's subpar defenses against carrier strikes or be used as a semi-reliable scout for torpedoes. The catapult planes on battleships are however active for only 90 seconds, which may limit their utility. While battleships aren't in much danger of losing modules, Preventative Maintenance reduces the chance of losing a main turret, and allow you to take the Auxiliary Armaments Modification 1 to increase your secondary and AA batteries' resilience. The Priority Target skill isn't as crucial as it is on cruisers, but it can give yo useful information as to when to push ahead or retreat.

For the tier 2 skill, Expert Marksman is a necessity beyond anything on the selection of skills for this tier, and should be acquired on all battleships. Following that, you may get Adrenaline Rush, which can provide a significant boost to your damage output as you lose health in the match, to the point that you can shave of more than 5 seconds off your reload time in the last quarter of your health pool. Jack of All Trades provides a reload benefit to all your consumables and the Damage Control ability.

The tier 3 skill Superintendent is a very valuable skill on battleships because it provides an extra Repair Party consumable to restore your ship's hit points, and should be high on your list of skills to take. Otherwise, Basic Fire Control adds to the punch of your secondaries and AA and should be taken for a secondary build. Vigilance can give you crucial seconds with which to evade surprise torpedoes, but it does not replace careful attention to your surroundings.

The last tier of skills gives you a selection between Manual Control for Secondary Armament, Fire Prevention, Advanced Firing Training, and Concealment Expert. Manual Control for Secondary Armament and Advanced Firing Control are indispensable for secondary battery oriented builds, and provide the accuracy and range needed for them to work well. Fire Prevention increases Nagato's survivability, but keep in mind that the small reduction in fire chance may not be worth the amount of skill points it costs. Finally, Concealment Expert afforts Nagato a small tactical boost in allowing her to withdraw when it gets too hot, though the decrease in detection radius is not so large, and this skill generally is of little benefit unless your captain is to be moved to higher tier battleships.

Consumables

Players can equip the following consumables on Nagato: Damage Control Party, Repair Party, and a choice between Spotting Aircraft and Catapult Fighter. It is strongly recommended to take the Premium versions of Damage Control Party and Repair Party to maximize survivability.

Camouflage

Type 1, 2, or 5 camouflage can be equipped for credits; Types 2 or 5 are recommended at a minimum to reduce the accuracy of incoming shells.

Players who wish to spend doubloons can equip Nagato with Type 17 camouflage that lowers her detection radius, reduces the accuracy of incoming shells, reduces her repair costs, and increases the amount of experience she earns.

Signals

As with all battleships, Nagato comes with 8 signal flag slots. The three most important flags are India Delta, Juliet Yankee Bissotwo and India Yankee; all of which will improve your survivability. If the captain goes with the Secondary Build, the addition of Mike Yankee Soxisix will further improve the performance of Nagato’s secondaries.

Note: Use of the Juliet Charlie signal makes detonation impossible.
