New York — American Tier V battleship.

Developed from the Wyoming class. In contrast to her predecessor, she featured reinforced armor and main battery guns of a larger caliber. When upgraded, she received reasonably good AA defense and improved torpedo protection.

Player Opinion

Performance

The first American superdreadnought, New York is a substantial firepower upgrade from Wyoming with ten (10) 14-inch main guns. These guns can penetrate most targets within two tiers of her. New York is a very short battleship at 573 feet long and, combined with better accuracy than its predecessor, this concentration of firepower means she is a very dangerous target to broadside at short-to-medium range. The midships turret has a very limited engagement arc to either side and usually has to be brought to bear by turning the hull. In terms of protection she is heavily and reliably armored against lateral fire but her deck armor is ineffective against most battleship rounds she will meet, so long-range duels and exposure are best avoided.

Pros:

  • She has one of the heaviest broadsides in her tier, with ten 356 mm guns in five twin turrets.
  • Compact and well armored.
  • Upgraded AA is significant for tier and a major hazard to Tier IV carriers.
  • Decent dispersion at mid-range, making her deadly against enemy cruisers and battleships.
  • Much more heavily armored and armed than many of her counterparts.

Cons:

  • Stock hull is a downgrade from elite World War II Wyoming including ineffective AA and secondaries (even when upgraded), poor penetration, and extreme sluggishness.
  • Sluggish top speed of 21 knots.
  • Torpedoes have a higher chance of causing detonations due to the magazines all along the hull.
  • Very narrow full salvo firing arc, which means captains must show her broadside or forget about using her third turret.
  • Armor scheme is tough but can be tricky to use.
  • Similarly to the predecessor Wyoming, hull B makes the secondary battery weakest in the game for a battleship, with only 3 slow-firing, short-range barrels per side.

Research

While it may be tempting to invest in Hull (B) first, New York’s stock speed is pathetically slow and liable to keep her out of the battle for significant lengths of time. It's best to buy the upgraded Propulsion module first, then pick up Hull (B). The range boost from the improved Fire Control System module can be left for last.

Optimal Configuration

Upgrades

New York only has a handful of upgrade slots to fill.

Slot 1 is most commonly filled with Main Armaments Modification 1 -20% to the risk of main battery becoming incapacitated. / +50% to main battery survivability. / -20% to main battery repair time. / -20% to the risk of torpedo tubes becoming incapacitated. / +50% to torpedo tubes survivability. / -20% to torpedo tubes repair time., though Auxiliary Armaments Modification 1 : +100% survivability to each. is a popular pick for captains who go for a full AA build with other upgrades and commander skills.

Slot 2 has one choice for battleships - Damage Control System Modification 1: -5% to the risk of fire. / -3% to the risk of flooding when torpedoes hit the torpedo protection.. This will reduce chances of fire and flood.

Slot 3 has only one option that is recommended, Artillery Plotting Room Modification 1 Extends the firing range of the main battery and secondary battery: +16% main battery firing range. / +5% secondary battery firing range. / -5% secondary battery dispersion., as this improves the firing range of her main battery which will be of good use when facing ships of a higher tier.

Commander Skills

Consumables

New York can equip the following consumables:

Camouflage

Type 1, 2, or 5 camouflage can be equipped for credits; Types 2 or 5 are recommended at a minimum to reduce the accuracy of incoming shells.

Players who wish to spend doubloons can equip New York with Type 15 camouflage that lowers her detection radius, reduces the accuracy of incoming shells, and increases the amount of experience she earns. An alternate permanent camouflage ("Skull") is occasionally available that paints her hull entirely black with a white skull on either side of her bow.

Signals

New York can mount up to eight signal flags simultaneously. Captains should mount Sierra Mike (+5% to the ship's maximum speed.) flags to increase the ship’s top speed. India Delta (+20% to the amount of HP recovered when the Repair Party consumable is used.) flags are highly recommended to increase the amount of hitpoints the Repair Party consumable can recover. India Yankee (-20% to fire duration.) flags are also recommended to reduce the time required to put out fires. Lastly, economic and special signal flags can be mounted to increase the ship’s experience and credit gain per battle.

Note: Use of the Juliet Charlie signal makes detonation impossible.
