-|A patrol gunboat designed as a ship with displacement outside the Washington Naval Treaty limits and with cruiser-grade artillery armament. A total of two Erie-class ships were built. During World War II they served as patrol ships in the Panama Canal area. In 1942, Erie was torpedoed by the German submarine U-163 and was run ashore to prevent sinking. All attempts to repair the ship proved futile.<br />
