Player Opinion

Performance

Pros:

  • Huge improvement in turret rotation time
  • Same great range and ballistics as all the other ships in this line
  • Very fast torpedoes

Cons:

  • Turrets are very large and weak and you only have two of them
  • Easy to spot (7.7 km detection range)
  • Easy to hit - quite large for a destroyer
  • Same awful torpedo range as its predecessor
  • Rudder shift feels sluggish for a destroyer
  • Slower than Gnevny

The Ognevoi occupies an awkward spot in the Soviet destroyer line. As a transition between the tier 5 Gnevny and the tier 7 Kiev, it does not have the firepower of the Kiev but is almost as large and as easy to hit (although its large health pool somewhat compensates for that). It is somewhat less maneuverable than the Gnevny, but it has access to the tier 6 equipment slot that can improve the rudder shift time.

The biggest change for this ship from its predecessor has to do with its artillery arrangement. The guns are now placed in two turrets which rotate much faster than the Gnevny turrets, almost twice as fast in fact. However these turrets are a mixed blessing, since they are large and quiet poorly armored. Even with the equipment that improves turret survivability they will be knocked out very very often. Losing one of your turrets will reduce your artillery firepower by 50% and losing both will leave you with only your 4 km range torpedoes. Staying at maximum range and not getting hit is vital for this ship. One thing that will help players with staying at range is that they should be able to unlock the Advanced Firing Training level 4 captain skill at this tier. Soviet destroyers benefit from this captain skill more than any other ships in the game and it will help players grind out the xp on this ship as well as its higher tier comrades.

Early Research

Get the fire control system first - the ballistics of the guns and the large size of the ship (compared to other dds) dictate a long range playstile. Get the hull and torpedoes later.

Historical Info

The Ognevoi class were a series of destroyers built for the Soviet Navy during and immediately after World War II. The Soviet Designation was Project 30 and Project 30K.

The Type 7 destroyers proved to have a less than adequate seaworthiness for Soviet conditions. The Soviets decided to build a larger ship with main armament in enclosed turrets. These ships proved popular with the Soviet Navy and formed the basis for the post war Skoryy class destroyer or Project 30bis.
