Pensacola — American Tier VI cruiser.

The first cruisers of the U.S. Navy built in accordance with the guidelines outlined by the Washington Naval Treaty. To ensure sufficient firepower, ten 203 mm guns were distributed among four turrets. Due to the narrow hull, triple-gun turrets were mounted in an elevated position. During World War II, USS Pensacola played a significant role in the Battle of Midway as an escort for aircraft carriers Yorktown and Enterprise. She later participated in the campaign in the Solomon Islands, serving as an escort for aircraft carrier Hornet. During the course of the war, the ship was awarded 13 battle stars.

Player Opinion

Performance

Affectionately called "Pepsi-cola" by some and the "Penance-cola" or "Painsacola" by those who suddenly have to sit on her helm due to the very notion that she is a ship for the penitent of all the dastardly and evil things you have done on her predecessor, the Pensacola is the first heavy cruiser within the American cruiser line and while it may take tier 7 to reach it despite her Japanese counterpart the Furutaka being unlocked at tier 5, she has the advantage of having more responsive handling than her first heavy cruiser counterpart. Stock, the Pensacola will literally be very agonizing and the moniker "Penance-cola" will be applicable for the first few runs such as very long turret traverse for and the range that's practically several meters short of her predecessor's effective range you will have on her until you get sufficient upgrades to soup her up because when she is fully kitted and equipped, she's one stalwart cruiser that will be in line with her counterparts as well as a ship that can align her turrets as fast as possible without losing bead on the enemy. Her AA suite makes her perfect for anti-air screens and with her guns to a capacity, cruiser and destroyer screening as well due to the surprisingly fast shell velocity she gets over her predecessor. However, people often use the term "Rest in Pensacola" because of the notion that the Cleveland is better than the Pensacola and of the sudden change that is brought in the strategies of how to play this ship. As of the current iteration, players will be somewhat pleased that the heavy cruiser has a detection range reduction which was originally the horrid 15.6km to an astounding 12.8km which is, surprisingly, slightly lower than Myoko's.

If you wish to further enhance the Pensacola, it is suggested that your commander must reach the concealment expert skill as well as having the BFT and AFT skills to further improve the AA suite to very high levels while kitting the cruiser with main battery survivability, AA gun range increase, damage control 1 and rudder shift along with paint that has both detection decrease and enemy dispersion increase parameters

Pros:

  • Excellent and fairly accurate guns
  • Third longest firing cruiser at her tier (with upgrade); only Yorck has the longest range
  • AP shells are surprisingly devastating
  • Reasonable shell speed, seems like an improvement from its predecessor
  • AA suite is sound enough and can serve as an AA screen in higher tiers
  • Shell arc means you can deal considerable damage at any range
  • Decent turret traverse when fully upgraded, and with the Expert Marksman skill trained for her captain she can practically "shoot and turn" without losing bead against the enemy
  • Fairly good concealment after 0.6.1

Cons:

  • About as well-armored as a can of cola
  • Teeth gritting stock grind
  • Very easy to score citadel hits
  • Long turret traverse on stock turret
  • Shell arc, while it can go over some landmasses with relative ease, will have problems with leading
  • Fairly slow shell velocity

Research

It is highly suggested that you acquire range as the AA suite on the stock hull is decent combined with defensive AA fire, then acquire hull B and then the upgraded turret so that your guns can rotate faster

  • decent camo rating when fully kitted
