Plymouth — British special premium Tier X cruiser.

During the process of further developing the Town-class cruisers between 1935 and 1936, several projects with different weapons were considered. The largest of them was the KXV project armed with four quadruple-gun main battery turrets. However, the Admiralty preferred the variant with triple-gun turrets to save weight. Later on, this led to the emergence of the Edinburgh-class cruisers.

Player Opinion

Performance

Plymouth is a Tier X Royal Navy light cruiser, and the Steel Ship counterpart to the tech tree HMS Minotaur. Compared to the Minotaur, Plymouth seems less odd in line with the rest of the Royal Navy Light Cruisers, though at the same time she still is a paradox. For one thing, her main battery turrets carry four 152mm guns each, with a total of 16 152mm guns with a reload of 6.5 seconds, comparing to the Minotaur which wields 10 152mm guns in five twin turrets, each of which reload in 3.2 seconds. In terms of durability, both ships are equally prone to exploding suddenly and violently, with the key differences coming in the citadel placement and the strength of the Repair Party Consumable. The Plymouth takes it's origin in the Town-Class Cruiser hull ( as it is a Town-class Preliminary ), which means her citadel is placed lower in the water compared to the Minotaur. However, the Plymouth gives up 3,200 hitpoints, and more importantly, her repair party is far weaker, having only a Standard Cruiser repair party. Other differences between the Plymouth and the Minotaur include the Plymouth having a weaker AA suite, somewhat better handling, and slightly worse stealth, in addition to carrying only half the torpedo complement of the tech tree ship.

However, the Plymouth's main selling point, and something that should not be neglected, is the fact that she can wield both a Smoke Generator and Surveillance Radar at the same time. This, in a similar manner to Belfast, means she can deploy her smoke Generator when spotted and immediately use Surveillance Radar to spot out any unfortunate Destroyer that gets caught by it.

Overall, the Plymouth is a fairly good ship, but she is outclassed by her tech tree counterpart in more than a few ways. For a Steel Ship, she's decent enough, but a better investment may be put towards other ships such as the Stalingrad and the Austin.

Pros:

  • Torpedoes deal decent damage and can be fired one at a time

Cons:

  • Poor main battery firing angles
  • Short main battery range
  • Like most British light cruisers, Plymouth lacks HE shells
  • Fragile ship with a small hitpoint pool, weak armor and a large citadel block

  • AA defenses are somewhat underwhelming
  • Sluggish rudder shift and subpar speed for a light cruiser
