?Ranger is the first taste of high-tier carrier play in the American carrier line. She has a hangar size of 73 planes when fully upgraded. This is excellent for the tier, because smart play will mean she always has planes available (unlike Tier VI). The jump from Tier VI to VII is huge; in most ship lines, this is the dividing line between pre-World War II and post-World War II designs. Ranger versus Tier VI ships is fairly brutal. +Ranger is the first taste of high-tier carrier play in the American carrier line. She is much faster than the Langley making positioning of the ship much easier. Also, it is the first time where players have access to the Fighter consumable that can provide anti-air support and limited spotting for the team.
?The Stock Build — a single squadron of each type — is recommended for balance. Ranger’s anti-aircraft suite is decent and will destroy a few planes out of a determined attack, but captains should trust their fighters more than their AA. Ranger is relatively slow for her tier, so captains must be always aware of their map position and try to remain near allied vessels but safely away from enemy guns. The fighter squadrons of her most common foe — Hiryu — are stronger due to having two or three squadrons available, so cunning captains must always attempt to engage them near friendly ships so their AA can assist. Strike Build Ranger is a highly controversial ship; carrier captains tend to like her, while their teammates generally don't (as she brings no fighters into a game). Air Superiority Build captains will likely be able to seize control of the skies, but will find themselves seriously lacking when attempting to deal damage to enemy ships; Ranger’s dive bombers still mount only 500 lb. bombs and are very prone to missing all bombs in a drop, even when the drop is done manually.+Attack Aircraft:

?Ranger’s biggest weakness is her detection radius; once spotted, she doesn't have the armor to shrug off incoming shells. Even cruisers like Atlanta can get large amounts of damage into a Ranger because of the lack of armor near critical areas. Using terrain intelligently and remaining undetected is key; the only other recourse is to rely on teammates for defense. If Ranger is caught alone, it's a death sentence.+Attack aircraft have reasonable healthpool that allows them to keep attacking enemy ships such as destroyers for a longer amount of time than other carrier's attack aircraft. Rockets are effective against destroyers and do reasonable damage, they can still be effective against cruisers but yet lack to do much damage against battleships.

?* Excellent anti-aircraft suite.+
?* Strike loadout can devastate any ship when properly used.+

?* Detected very easily.+
?* Practically no armor — only 25mm at the thickest point — allowing for easy citadel hits and breaking of modules.+
?* Slower than most other ships at her tier, meaning she falls behind much more easily.+
?* Extremely clumsy to maneuver, with a 15.9 second rudder turn time.+
?* Dive bombers have somewhat questionable accuracy; auto-aimed squadrons will produce poor results. Manual bombing is recommended to improve damage output.+
?* Even with perfect manual drops from the dive bombers, it is possible to still miss all bombs... even on big targets such as battleships or carriers.+
?* Although dive bombs are listed as 7500 maximum damage, most of the time the average damage by each bomb doesn't exceed 2000 points.+

?For Tier 1 skills, Strike Build captains should seriously consider Expert Rear Gunner; all other builds should stick to Basics of Survivability and/or Basic Firing Training. At Tier 2, Strike Build or Stock Build players will want to consider Torpedo Armament Expertise; those looking for a more general tack should take Fire Prevention. At Tier 3, Torpedo Acceleration isn't a bad choice for Strike Build captains, whereas High Alert is a good choice for anyone. All builds should take Aircraft Servicing Expert at Tier 4 and Air Supremacy at Tier 5. +As the planes are slow, players would want to invest in increasing engine boost time and aircraft speed. Torpedo acceleration would help but would increase the torpedo arming distance, which can be challenging even for experienced players.

Ranger was a relatively small ship, closer in size and displacement to the first US carrier — Langley — than later ships. An island superstructure was not included in the original design, but was added after completion. Due to its small displacement, putting a large smokestack like the Lexington would cause top-heavy and instability. As a solution, experimental smokestacks that could fold sideways were introduced. These stacks would stay upright in normal conditions(taking some of the deck space) and fold horizontally when aircraft had to be launched. Theoretically, it would give enough deck space and clear it of smoke. In reality, the low height the stacks would cover the plane deck with fume whenever the ship was pushing its speed. Also the horizontal placement would only cause more fume to cover up the deck. The small displacement made it impossible to operate the ship in bad weather or carry enough protective devices(AA, anti-torpedo bulge, etc). Learning from these failures, USN were able to design the more successful Yorktown-class carriers such as the Enterprise.
?One of the Ranger’s historical aircraft, the Grumman F4F-3 (currently on the Tier V Bogue), is missing. The Wildcat's markings identify as VF-41 which was based on USS Ranger.+Due to the low displacement of the ship, the Ranger did not have a torpedo hanger. Although the ship carried torpedo bombers, they were limited to antisubmarine warfare(dropping depth charges) or spotting.

Player Opinion

Performance

Ranger is the first taste of high-tier carrier play in the American carrier line. She is much faster than the Langley making positioning of the ship much easier. Also, it is the first time where players have access to the Fighter consumable that can provide anti-air support and limited spotting for the team.

Attack Aircraft:

Attack aircraft have reasonable healthpool that allows them to keep attacking enemy ships such as destroyers for a longer amount of time than other carrier's attack aircraft. Rockets are effective against destroyers and do reasonable damage, they can still be effective against cruisers but yet lack to do much damage against battleships.

Torpedo Bombers:

The aerial torpedoes have markedly increased damage from the Langley (5567 vs 3500), allowing the player to enjoy a higher damage output than before. Since battleships of this tier are slow, players can easily practice their drops against these targets.

Dive Bombers:

HE bombs are highly effective against destroyers and light cruisers of this tier. Players should start practicing HE drops on destroyers as it becomes the cornerstone for success in high tier matches.

Tips:

Positioning her is very important when using this ship because she has poor concealment and surprisingly her armor is extremely weak and can take a lot of citadel hits from enemy ships even from destroyer HE shells. For more information visit: {https://na.wows-numbers.com/ship/4183799792,Ranger/}

Pros:

 • Good plane health pool allowing chances of landing hits more likely.
 • Good HE bombs, effective against all ship types.
 • Better top speed of the carrier itself, allowing for easier repositioning.
 • Attack aircraft have high chances of hitting targets when mis aimed due to the rockets large spread.
 • Very good AA suite.
 • Jack of all trades planes, every plane is effective against any ship type.
 • All plane types deal reasonable damage to enemy ships, thanks to the combination of plane hp and damage.

Cons:

 • Poor survivability, very easily detected and citadel easily because of her poor armor.
 • Extremely clumsy to maneuver, with a long rudder shift time(15.9 seconds), and a large turning circle of 1 010m, almost as bad as Midway.
 • Like most USN CVs torpedo bombers and dive bombers have poor speed.
 • Slow planes means lack of support for allies which contributes to her low win rate of 49%, although this isn't a problem for experience players.

Research

 1. Upgrade to SB2U Vindicator (Dive Bombers) for extra 3 bombers and a 3rd bomb per attack run.
 2. Upgrade to TBD Devastator (Torpedo Bombers) for 1 extra attack run per squadron.
 3. Upgrade to F4F Wildcat (Rocket Attack Aircraft) for 2 more rockets per attack run
 4. Upgrade to Hull(B) for better AA and hitpoints of the CV itself
 5. Proceed to the Lexington

Optimal Configuration

Upgrades

The recommended upgrades for Ranger are as follows:

Commander Skills

As the planes are slow, players would want to invest in increasing engine boost time and aircraft speed. Torpedo acceleration would help but would increase the torpedo arming distance, which can be challenging even for experienced players.

Consumables

The consumables available for the ship and each plane type for Ranger is as follows:

Ship

Attack Aircraft

Torpedo Bombers

Dive Bombers

Camouflage

Type 1, 2, or 5 camouflage can be equipped for credits; Types 1 or 5 are recommended at a minimum to reduce detectibility range.

Players who wish to spend doubloons can equip Ranger with Type 17 camouflage that lowers her detection radius, reduces the accuracy of incoming shells, reduces her repair costs, and increases the amount of experience she earns.

Signals

In the past, all carriers could only mount at most four signals at a time. This is not longer the case, Ranger can mount 8 total Signals.

As a carrier, Ranger has no risk of detonating. As such, the signal (-100% to the risk of your ship's magazine detonating.) should be disregarded for this ship.

Players should mount Equal Speed Charlie London (🚫) for 50% XP gain, Zulu Hotel (🚫) for 50% Commander XP gain, November Echo Setteseven (+5% continuous damage by all AA guns, +5% damage per second within the explosion radius of shells fired from medium- and long-range AA defenses.) increased AA damage, Mike Yankee Soxisix (+5% to secondary battery maximum firing range. / -5% to maximum dispersion of secondary battery shells. / -5% to secondary battery loading time.) secondary battery range & firing buff, Juliet Whiskey Unaone (+15% chance of causing flooding. / +5% to the risk of your ship's magazine detonating.) flooding chance increase (Very useful), India-X-Ray (+1% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber above 160mm. / +0.5% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber below 160mm. / +5% to the risk of your ship's magazine detonating.) fire chance increase, Victor Lima (+1% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber above 160mm / +0.5% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber below 160mm. / +4% chance of causing flooding.) large fire & flooding chance increase, and India Yankee (-20% to fire duration.) for faster fire dissipation.

These signals are to buff the ship performance while gaining a fair bonus of XP.

Players can also choose to equip the Dragon Signal (🚫) instead of Zulu Hotel (🚫) signal the for faster commander (re)training.

Having a high leveled Captain while playing Carrier can give you an edge over other Captains.
