Sanzang is a Buddhist monk, scientist, philosopher, traveler, and translator. He is not only an eminent person, but also the main character from "Journey to the West", a novel by Wu Cheng'en.

Player Opinion

Performance

As the first Pan-Asian premium aircraft carrier, Sanzang is not a new concept, but is actually a clone of the USN T8 premium Saipan, except for the permanent camouflage. She plays exactly the same as Saipan and shares her strengths and weaknesses. Players who are comfortable with the play style of Saipan should not have any problem playing with Sanzang.

Sanzang shares the same Tiny Tim rockets, stock torpedoes and upgraded HE bombs as the Midway, but has only 6 planes for each plane type per squadron and only 9 of each plane type on deck at the start of the game. On top of that, the plane restoration time is more than 2 minutes, sharing the title of having the worst l plane restoration time with Saipan. Like Midway, the HE bombs and rockets have very high alpha damage, but sometimes will have overly large aiming circles and bad dispersion.

Pros:

  • High alpha bomb and rocket damage.
  • Planes have high speed and good-sized HP pools.
  • Usable torpedo bomber aiming speed.
  • Torpedo bombers drop 2 torpedoes per plane (4 fish per drop).
  • Good rudder shift, turning circle and top speed, making it easier to reposition the carrier.
  • Small detection radius by sea.

Cons:

  • Low plane count per squadron and on deck.
  • Horrible plane restoration time of more than 2 minutes for torpedo and dive bombers, and 117s restoration for attack aircraft.
  • Very weak armor compared to the Lexington or Enterprise.
  • Anemic AA defenses with stock range of 3.5km and insufficient AA fire power to make attack runs on this carrier expensive.
  • Despite the good detectability range by sea, detection range by air is 10.4km, giving enemy aircraft carrier more than enough time to maneuver squadron into o position before attacking.
  • Small number of planes makes attacks by enemy fighter squadrons very costly for the player.

Research

As a premium ship, Sanzang doesn't have any upgrades to research.

The recommended upgrades for Sanzang are as follows:

  • Slot 2: Aircraft Engines Modification 1
  • Slot 3: Aerial Torpedoes Modification 1
  • Slot 4: Bombers Modification 2
  • Slot 5: Concealment System Modification 1

Commander Skills

Captains should focus on plane survivability despite the generous HP pools of the planes due to the long plane restoration time. Air Supremacy, Improved Engines, Aircraft Armor, Survivability Expert, Sight Stabilisation, and Proximity Fuse are recommended for a 15 point commander, with special emphasis on the defense skills. However, do note that the distribution of skill points is a matter of personal choice. Captains should choose different skills for Sanzang if they feel more comfortable with that playstyle.

Camouflage

As a premium ship, Sanzang comes included with Type 10 camouflage that lowers her detection radius, reduces the accuracy of incoming shells, reduces her repair costs, and increases the amount of experience she earns.

Signals

Note: Use of the Juliet Charlie signal makes detonation impossible.
