Player Opinion
Performance
Serov, like other aircraft carriers in soviet tech tree, plays differently from the other aircraft carriers with the unique trait of attacking with all aircrafts in squadron at once. Making its potential alpha-damage very high. The tradeoff comes with the lowest aircraft HP in the tier, and the attacking pattern means that each aircraft loses is a damage loss. On the upside, Serov is rewarded for careful target selection and plane conservation before attack. While mismanagement of the targeting or making wrong judgement on attacking will be punished heavily with low aircraft HP and slow speed. Serov also has the fastest ship speed for aircraft carriers in its tier, making positioning and repositioning easier. A well positioned player could mitigate the disadvantage of low aircraft speed and the inability to circle around a target to apply quick damage over time. Though players need to be careful with 12 km. base detection range.
Attack Aircraft
Attack Aircraft have very small HP pool and slow speed, but it the reticle is aimed further away than other attack aircraft due to angle of attack. Taking advantage of that, Serov can strike before AA applying full damage with invulnerable time during attack run. The rockets are effective against all classes with high damage, fire chance and penetration of 37 mm. However, the large horizontal dispersion of the rockets need careful approach on angle of attack for full damage potential.
Torpedo Bombers
The torpedo bombers also inherited the trait of small HP pool and slow speed, moreover, its torpedo has the lowest damage compared to other carriers in the tier. While the torpedo has a moderate speed of 41 knots and high damage when attacking with a full squadron, it’s recommended to use against targets with low maneuverability and weak AA to maximize damage potential.
Skip bombers
Unique from other carriers at tier VI, Serov has access to skip bombers instead of traditional dive bombers, whose attack pattern differs greatly. The skip bombers attack is similar to torpedo bombers as it’s the most effective to attack from the side angle to maximize hit rate. The bomb has 32mm penetration, which can deal with most ships plating in its tier. Though it has moderate 6,100 damage per bomb. The damage is consistent with 35% fire chance per bomb and the great accuracy.
Overall, Serov is a strong tier VI CV with high damage output. However, she has a weakness of slow aircraft speed and long rotation time for attacking the same target to apply damage over time. And with only one chance to attack per squadron, a missed attack will cost much opportunity window.
Experienced players with good target selection, good attack run and good positioning will be rewarded highly, while beginners might struggle to overcome the weakness as it can be very unforgiving.Pros:
- Good speed and maneuverability allow her to position and reposition quickly.
- Great alpha strike damage with a full squadron attacking at once.
- Skip bombers can attack from further range, reducing AA damage.
- Powerful rockets with accuracy, penetration, and damage that are effective against all classes.
- Large squadron and hangar size compared to other carriers in the same tier.
Cons:
- Slow aircraft speed.
- Very low HP per aircraft, lowest in tier VI.
- Weak individual armament damage, need to land multiple hits in order to deal high damage.
- Each plane loss directly affects damage of the squadron.
Research
Availability of researchable upgrades for Serov is as follows:
- Hull: Upgrade to Hull (B) for a significant improvement in AA. Research of this module unlocks progression to VIII Pobeda.
- Torpedo Bombers - Grokhovsky G-37 for better speed, a few more HP, and slower turn-around.
- Attack Aircraft - Polikarpov I-180 for better speed, slower turnaround, but double the rocket loadout.
- Skip Bombers - Kochyerigin BSh-1 for better speed, slower turnaround.
Optimal Configuration
Upgrades
The recommended upgrades for Serov should be focused as much as possible on the torpedo bombers and are as follows:
- Slot 1: Air Groups Modification 1 for faster plane return.
- Slot 2: Aircraft Engines Modification 1 for higher speed.
- Slot 3: Aerial Torpedoes Modification 1 for faster torpedo.
- Slot 4: Bombers Modification 1 for a larger HP pool. Alternatively Torpedo Bombers Modification 2 or Attack Aircraft Modification 2 could be used, depending on player preference.
Commander Skills
With Serov low plane speed and HP pool, emphasis should be on skills that boost bombers survivability and speed.
Consumables
The consumables available for the ship and each plane type for Serov are the same as the other T6 CVs and are as follows:
Ship
- Slot 1: Damage Control Party
- Slot 2: CAP Fighter [4]
Attack Aircraft
- Slot 1: Engine Cooling [2]
- Slot 2: Patrol Fighter [3]
Torpedo Bombers
- Slot 1: Engine Cooling [2]
- Slot 2: Patrol Fighter [3]
Skip Bombers
- Slot 1: Engine Cooling [2]
- Slot 2: Patrol Fighter [3]
Camouflage
Type 1, 2, or 5 camouflage can be equipped for credits; Types 1 or 5 are recommended at a minimum to reduce detectability range.
Players who wish to spend doubloons can equip Serov with Type 16 camouflage that lowers her detection radius, reduces the accuracy of incoming shells, and increases the amount of experience she earns.
