Tirpitz — German premium Tier VIII battleship.
One of the two mightiest battleships in the German Navy. Akin to the lead ship of her class, Tirpitz had heavy ship armor, powerful artillery and a high speed. Weak horizontal armor protection was the main drawback of her design, but this was largely offset by improving her AA defense.

Player Opinion
Performance
Affectionately referred to as the "Derpitz" or the "Torpitz" — due to some savvy players choosing to get up close and personal with her and utilize her torpedo tubes for a finishing blow — Tirpitz is surprisingly flexible for a battleship and can be used as either a proper battleship or as an impromptu battlecruiser. Probably the most surprising thing players will find is that her main battery load time is about 26 seconds — faster than any battleship in her tier — which can be daunting to face. She also has torpedo tubes, useful for when cruisers or destroyers get in close for a torpedo run or when the ship is able to work its way into melee range. The 15-inch guns are rather small for a a Tier VIII battleship, and have not only a questionable dispersion when firing at maximum to extreme range but will find trouble punching through armor designed to protect against 16-inch shells. However, the smaller caliber means that shells are less likely to overpenetrate cruisers, and when combined with the good turret traverse and reload time (for a battleship), this can make Tirpitz excellent at clearing the battlefield of enemy cruisers quickly.
Her AA suite — once considered sub-par — has gone through several rounds of improvements and is probably now best considered as "adequate" rather than "excellent". As a capital ship, she will, of course, still be a priority target for enemy aircraft carriers, but she is not as easy to attack from the air as she once was. At 31 knots, it may be easy for her to outrun her team; excellent map awareness and an eye on positioning of friendly ships is key to playing Tirpitz well. Also, as a German vessel, she was designed and built with the relatively short range battles of the northeast Atlantic and Baltic in mind, not the long range battles of the Pacific. Thus, her armor is a double-edged sword, very thick on the side for short range attacks, but very weak on the deck should a round manage to land and penetrate there. Similar to her cruiser counterparts in the German tech tree, her AP shells far outshine her HE shells, which leave much to be desired.
With her handling characteristics, there are two primary ways to drive this ship: either joining the main wave as part of the battle line, or as the capital ship for a cruiser group that did not join the main line to form a flanking unit, as almost nobody will expect a lone battleship behind the small cruiser group that was detected by the enemy stragglers.
LittleWhiteMouse's Premium Ship Review: Tirpitz from the NA forums
Pros:
- Fast turret traverse and main battery reload time (26 seconds) for a battleship.
- Good shell velocity.
- Excellent top speed at 30.5 knots.
- Good side hull armor.
- Solid range and shell speed.
- Good credit-earner.
- Has one quadruple torpedo tube on each side located near amidships.
- Best rudder shift time at its tier.
- Well-protected citadel and impressive durability. Tirpitz is among the hardest ships in the game to land citadel hits against; most AP shells will land normal penetrations and are thus easier to repair damage from.
Cons:
- 15-inch guns have trouble with angled enemy battleships (use HE against the superstructure or choose a different target).
- Only has eight (8) barrels, while every other ship at this tier has nine (9) or more of a higher caliber.
- Guns are about as inaccurate at long range as other battleships' guns.
- Torpedoes only have a 6.0km range, making them close in, if not defensive weapons.
- Torpedo tubes are vulnerable as they have a good chance to be frequently incapacitated to outright destroyed.
- Weak deck armor makes the battleship susceptible to citadel hits if rounds punch through the deck.
- Weak torpedo protection, although better than North Carolina.
- Showing off broadside will eventually lead to destruction of the superstructure, and allows 33% damage pens through the upper belt for massive damage.
- AA suite is only decent; carriers hellbent on sinking Tirpitz will likely be able to eventually.
- Extremely vulnerable to fires. Superstructures can be set on fire by calibers of any size quite easily.
- The only true armor is her hull and her turrets. The enormous superstructures/deck have virtually no armor at all.
- Vulnerability of citadel shows itself during full rudder turns; the red painted lower hull is practically the citadel itself.

Upgrades
Suggestions for outfitting her upgrade modules vary widely, but one iteration that can prove useful is prioritizing the improvement of her AA suite to a level that makes players feel safer from air attacks, as the anti-surface aspect of the battleship is already sound as it is. Start by equipping Auxiliary Armaments Mod 1, AA Guns Mod 2, Damage Control Mod 1, and Steering Gears Mod 2 to improve maneuverability should anything happen that requires you to rapidly change course (such as torpedo strikes or salvo evasion). It may not be mandatory, but running the ship with Target Acquisition Mod 1 is often more practical than Concealment System Mod 1 in the same slot, as the latter only subtracts about 2km to the detection range.
There is at least one other captain's skill and module build worth mentioning: a full stealth build. With a 15-point German captain who has the Concealment Expert skill, Tirpitz's surface detection range can be brought as low as 12.3km (when combined with the aforementioned Concealment System Mod 1 upgrade). This is frighteningly low for a Tier VIII battleship, and allows Tirpitz to pop in and out of visibility in between volleys from her main battery, or simply to re-position to a different part of the map without being detected.
