''Tone'' (利根 重巡洋艦 Tone jūjun'yōkan?) was the lead ship in the two-vessel Tone class of heavy cruisers in the Imperial Japanese Navy. The ship was named after the Tone River, in the Kantō region of Japan and was completed on 20 November 1938 at Mitsubishi's Nagasaki shipyards. Tone was designed for long-range scouting missions and had a large seaplane capacity. She was extensively employed during World War II usually providing scouting services to their aircraft carrier task forces. She almost always operated in this capacity in conjunction with her sister ship Chikuma. ''Tone'' became infamous as a "murder ship" after 72 captured Allied merchants and sailors were brutally beheaded aboard her under orders from Vice Admiral Naomasa Sakonju after the Indian Ocean raid of 1944. Sakonju would later be executed as a war criminal in Hong Kong for this act. Tone — Japanese Tier VIII cruiser.

A well-armed heavy cruiser with an unconventional arrangement of the main battery guns which were concentrated in the forward end. Her speed and torpedo armament were as good as those of preceding Japanese cruisers, while she boasted heavier armor and more efficient AA defense.

Until further notice, preliminary testing of Tone has been suspended.
