Managing upgrades
One upgrade can be mounted in each slot. A particular upgrade can be mounted only in its appropriate slot.
An upgrade — mounted or demounted (in Inventory) — can be sold for half of its nominal purchase cost (some upgrades are not purchasable but obtained by other means). If the desired upgrade is available in Inventory, it may be mounted only from Inventory; an upgrade can be purchased only if one is not available in Inventory.
A mounted upgrade can be demounted to Inventory for 25, or sold. When selling a ship, all upgrades mounted on that ship must either be sold or demounted.
Base Upgrades
Base upgrades are purchased for credits. Some packages for purchase, challenge rewards, and mission rewards may also grant base upgrades.

- ↑ Research seems to show that the specific effects are as follows:
- -50% to time for reaching full power. This is the time needed to "spool" the engines to full power in the direction the ship is traveling, and thus achieve maximum acceleration away from 0 knots. In other words, it increases the second derivative of speed (until the engines reach full power). It will not decrease the time it takes to reverse the engines to decelerate towards 0 knots. This effect is applied at all speeds.
- Increases engine power when the ship starts moving. This increases the ship's acceleration away from 0 knots when between -6 and 6 knots displayed speed. In other words, it increases the first derivative of speed (within this speed band). It does not improve the ship's deceleration towards 0 knots.

Special Upgrades
A special upgrade is an upgrade that modifies the behavior of an associated consumable. These upgrades are obtained through the Armory, currently for Coal. Special upgrades mount and demount like other upgrades — only one upgrade at a time in a slot.
In the Upgrades section of the Modules page in Port, a small green cross will appear on the slot where a special upgrade can be mounted when one is available in Inventory.
These upgrades are generally restricted to ships Tier VI and above. The ship must be able to equip the corresponding consumable in order to mount the upgrade. However, a special upgrade is not automatically compatible with all ships that can mount the consumable (for example, Missouri cannot mount Surveillance Radar Modification 1 , even though it has a radar consumable).
A special upgrade does nothing if its corresponding consumable is not mounted. For instance, Defensive AA Fire Modification 1 functions only if a Defensive AA Fire consumable is also mounted.

Unique Upgrades ("Legendary" Upgrades)
Unique upgrades (often referred to as "Legendary upgrades") are upgrades for Tier X tech tree ships. The aim of these upgrades is to adjust the characteristics of a ship to make it perform better in a specific role or offer an alternative style of gameplay. They are meant to add to the variability of ship loadouts while keeping ships in balance with each other, even if one ship has the unique upgrade and another does not.
These upgrades mount in slots 5 or 6, depending on the ship in question. They are mounted and demounted like other upgrades (only one upgrade in a slot at a time).
While a unique upgrade can be sold, it cannot be re-earned. Govern yourself accordingly.
In the Upgrades section of the Modules page in Port, a small red cross will appear on the slot where a unique upgrade can be mounted when one is available in Inventory.
With Update 0.9.2 mission chains for Unique Upgrades will no longer be obtainable. Uncompleted chains may continue through the year. Thereafter, Unique Upgrades will be obtained through the Research Bureau. Re: Forum post and clarification.
To obtain a unique upgrade, the ship must complete a chain of 5 combat missions[2] that is unlocked after playing one battle in it. The missions must be completed in sequential order in any mode of battle. As each Tier X ship has its own upgrade, it has its own mission chain.

Notes
- ↑ Until Update 0.8.11, only cruisers and destroyers plus Duke of York.
- ↑ The non-CV upgrades were briefly available in the Armory for Ironium earned in the 2019 Space Battles event.
- ↑ In addition to increasing the speed at which the engine spools up, this upgrade appears to increase acceleration away from 0 knots by a large factor (about triple, regardless of speed), making it more powerful than the standard Propulsion Modification 2 which only doubles acceleration and only between -6 and +6 knots. However, like that upgrade, it does not improve deceleration towards 0 knots. Example video.
- ↑ 4.0 4.1 As of Update 0.8.0 this upgrade remains in game, but may work differently, or do nothing. It is subject to change, replacement, or removal in the future.
