? | === | + | ===Design=== | |
? | HMS ''Valkyrie'' | + | HMS ''Valkyrie'' belonged to the Admiralty "V"-class of flotilla leaders. Their design stemmed from the creation of the "S" class of destroyers which were capable of reaching a 36-knot top speed. Since the existing flotilla leaders were incapable of matching this speed, the Royal Navy requested a new class of leaders capable of keeping pace with the "S" class.
? | + | |||
? | + | The "V"-class leaders were built under Britain's "Wartime Emergency Programme", so to speed production time they were built using the existing machinery designs of the "R"-class destroyers. The "R" class was larger than the proposed "V" class, so the larger machinery resulted in a higher weight and larger dimensions than originally planned, and further resulted in a decreased top speed of 34 knots.
+ | ||||
+ | The original "V"-class leaders, such as ''Valkyrie'', were armed with two twin 21-inch torpedo tubes, and a later modification with two triple 21-inch tubes would become the "W" class. ''Valkyrie’s'' sister ship HMAS ''[[Vampire]]'', however, was initially built as a test bed for aforementioned triple tube launchers, and as such was still a “V” -class. The "V"-class introduced other improvements over previous classes, such as super firing guns in an AB-XY layout that would continue to be used for most of the following Royal Navy destroyer classes.
+ | ||||
+ | Throughout her carrier in the Royal Navy, ''Valkyrie'' underwent minimal refits due to the consistency of her current equipment to meet the demands imposed on her. Sometime in her post-WW1 service, her out-dated 3-inch AA gun was replaced with a 40mm AA gun.
+ | ||||
+ | ===Service=== | |||
+ | HMS ''Valkyrie'' was laid down on 25 May 1916 by the William Denny & Brothers Ltd at Dumbarton, Scotland; being launched 12 March 1917. With the pennant number F05, she was completed 16 June 1917; being the first of the Admiralty "V"-class destroyer leaders completed.
+ | ||||
+ | Her first tour of service was as a member of the 10th Destroyer Flotilla, which itself was a member of the Harwich Force. The Harwich Striking Force was a collection of cruisers and destroyers stationed at the eponymous town in order to guard the southern entrance into the English Channel from enemy raiders whilst providing cover for maritime trade approaching and departing the Thames.
+ | ||||
+ | Her most noteworthy action happened on 22 December 1917 on a convoy escort to the Netherlands. She struck a mine, killing 12 of her crew instantly, plus 7 later on succumbing to their wounds. The damage she took resulted in her being put to dry docks till the summer of next year.
+ | ||||
+ | With repairs complete in July 1918, she was now part of the 13th Destroyer Flotilla stationed at Rosyth, assigned to the Grand Fleet when it was stationed there as well.
+ | ||||
+ | Following the First World War, she was deployed to the Baltic Sea with the rest of the 13th in order to participate in the Allied Intervention in the Russian Civil War, enabling the establishment of Estonia and Lithuania.
+ | ||||
+ | Shortly after, the 13th Flotilla was disbanded and ''Valkyrie'' was reassigned to the 3rd Destroyer Flotilla, now with a new pennant number: D61.
+ | ||||
+ | Her last section of service was with the 21st Destroyer Flotilla from 1921 till 1936, when she was stricken from the registry.

Player Opinion
Performance
HMS Valkyrie shares many characteristics with her sister-ship, HMAS Vampire, and as such there will be parallels between the gameplay styles of these two ships. Superficially, both will be found on the flanks of the main force or contesting cap circles, and both are primarily gunboats designed to out-trade other destroyers in terms of DPM output.
But the main point to consider is that although Vampire is geared towards being an active destroyer-hunter, Valkyrie is set up to play a more defensive position; either supporting allies on a flank offensive or preventing enemy ships from successfully grabbing the cap. Her wider gun angles mean that she is ill equipped to chase down rogue units; getting full artillery DPM required her to face broadside to the enemy. Hence, captains need to pick the locations of their engagements and set up ahead of time to ambush oncoming enemies. This does not mean she is timid; once properly positioned she has the tools to put the hurt on any ship that gets too close to Valkyrie. Ideal engagement distances are sub-5km and at that range her shell and torpedo speeds are mitigated. Bringing all guns to bear while harassing with single-fire torpedoes will keep any opponent on edge near her.
Having map awareness enhances Valkyrie’s potential as having prior knowledge to likely enemy attack routes allows Valkyrie the privilege to set up unexpected defence points. Furthermore, situational awareness is ideal as it is ill advisable to engage multiple enemy ships without allied support and designating an escape route from any ambush position can spell the difference between life and death.
Most fights will inevitably be positioned near islands, as they not only provide cover for Valkyrie’s approach, but also upon retreat or disengagement. Additionally, islands provide ideal screening to fire torpedoes into oncoming warships; giving them less time to react.
A special note on the Smoke Generator given to Royal Navy destroyers; due to their incredibly short duration, it encourages captains to continue to reposition their vessel in order to keep pace with the flow of battle. As a destroyer Valkyrie is most effective near the front of any assault or ambush, ergo the smoke provides an ability to set up a temporary cover from enemies. An individual charge seems like less of a waste if used incorrectly and a following charge should be available soon.Pros:
- Good artillery DPM.
- Good HP pool.
- Torpedoes fire individually.
- Good agility (turning radius + rudder shift).
- Smoke screen reload is fastest of all destroyers in class.
- Accelerates faster than other destroyers in class.
Cons:
- Average calibre guns for destroyers.
- Long flight times for shells.
- Bad gun arcs for rear turrets.
- Average concealment.
- Average torpedo DPM.
- Smoke screen duration in lowest destroyers in class.
- Does not get access to Engine Boost consumable.
Research
Availability of researchable upgrades for Valkyrie is as follows:
- Hull: Upgrade to Hull B for increase in hit-points, decrease in rudder-shift time, and improvement in AA suite. Research of this module unlocks progression to Wakeful.
- Gun Fire Control System: Upgrade to Mk III mod. 2 for increase in range.
Optimal Configuration
Upgrades
The recommended upgrades for Valkyrie are as follows:
- Slot 1: Main Armaments Modification 1 *
- Slot 2: Engine Room Protection
Upgrade Slot 1: Alternatively, captains may choose to mount Magazine Modification 1 in order to mitigate the chance of magazine detonation during combat.
Commander Skills
Recommended skills for Valkyrie commanders should be focused on enhancing her ability to engage other destroyers in artillery duels. This equates to a preference for skills focused on survivability and gun performance. A full breakdown of recommended skills are shown below:
