Vittorio Cuniberti — Italian Tier VIII destroyer.
The Maelstrate Class were a class of destroyers constructed for the Italian Navy between 1931 and 1934. Their design included a brand new hull that was intended to correct the stability problems experienced with the previous classes.
Vittorio Cuniberti was intended to be a further development of the Maelstrate class equipped with twin superfiring mounts forward of the superstructure and quadruple torpedo launchers.

The Ship
Vittorio Cuniberti is a Tier VIII ship in the Italian destroyer line and continues the close quarters characteristics of Italian destroyers. She maintains nearly the same effective gun firepower as her predecessor and receives upgraded torpedo firepower both with improved firing angles.
Armament
Vittorio Cuniberti uses 120 mm/50 OTO Model 1931 guns which retain the same shell ballistics and characteristics as the Aviere and Luca Tarigo. Vittorio Cuniberti being a destroyer of the Italian line has access to both HE and SAP shells. SAP shells have higher alpha damage and can penetrate thicker plating than standard HE shells but cannot light fires and can ricochet at steep angles. Her HE and SAP shell damage is the same as her predecessor at 1700 with 7% fire chance and 2850 respectively. Her main battery has a 6 second reload. The average reload gives her HE shells below average damage per minute while her SAP shells have some of the highest damage per minute values of Tier VIII destroyers. Unlike her predecessors though, which maintained a sizeable lead in damage per minute over most of their contemporaries, Vittorio Cuniberti contends with far more destroyers that have similar gun fire power. Her firing arcs are better than Luca Tarigo and her rear turret can rotate 360 degrees which alleviates some of the issues with her contenders as she can easily keep most of her guns on target especially when facing forward. Like her predecessors she has the lowest firing range of any destroyer at her tier with 8.6 km using the SDT 8 mod.2 module.
The torpedoes on Vittorio Cuniberti are average in characteristics for the tier. Her base torpedoes are two triple torpedo launchers that are identical to Luca Targio. Her upgraded torpedoes are two quadruple launchers that have a base reload of 90 seconds. Her torpedoes are slow for Tier VIII at 56 knots but they have a 12km range which allows her to launch from safe distances outside of most radar ranges. The damage per hit for individual torpedoes is one of the lowest at the tier at 10000. The torpedoes are not as strong compared to the torpedoes of other destroyers at Tier VIII and are best used to catch enemy vessels off guard with the long range and quick reload.
Vittorio Cuniberti has access to standard Italian DD consumables Exhaust Smoke Generator and Emergency Engine Power
. The Exhaust Smoke Generator allows her to sail at full speed during bloom time while remaining concealed however it has the lowest dispersion time in the game effectively making the end of the bloom time the end of the concealment time. Emergency Engine Power acts similarly to the normal Engine Boost
consumable found on many other destroyers however gives a much larger increase to speed for a much shorter period of time. These consumables couple make her useful as an ambush predator when engaging enemy destroyers or can be used as a quick means of disengaging from unfavorable engagements. Her base speed of 39 knots is above average for Tier VIII and when using Emergency Engine Power she can reach 50 knots, only slower than the French destroyers at Tier VIII. Her upgraded hull has average hit points for Tier VIII with average maneuverability. Her detectability is high with 8.4 km base concealment which is worse than most destroyers at Tier VIII.
Anti-Aircraft
Vittorio Cuniberti has access to both mid range and short range AA but lacks long range AA. The short ranged AA and mid ranged AA have below average values at 24.8 and 17.8 damage per second respectively. Her AA range is 3.5 km for the mid range and 2.0 km for the short range. It would be best for Vittorio Cuniberti to keep her AA turned off to reduce her detectability and only be used to defend herself when aircraft are close by.
Battle Performance
Vittorio Cuniberti serves the role of an ambush predator that can use her consumables to get out of trouble more easily than other destroyers. The limited range of her main armament encourages captains to take her into knife fight range to engage enemy vessels while using her high damage SAP shells and using either her Exhaust Smoke Generator or Emergency Engine Power
to leave the area during disadvantageous situations.
Pros:
- High damage SAP shells with some of the highest damage at Tier VIII.
- Good firing angles making the guns and torpedoes comfortable to use
- 12 km torpedo range is on the higher side
- Good base torpedo reload at 90 seconds
- Access to Exhaust Smoke Generator
that allow concealment at full speed
- Emergency Engine Power
provides a large boost to speed when needed
Cons:
- Poor damage per minute for HE shells
- Tougher competition from other gun oriented destroyers at Tier VIII
- Short uptimes on consumables leave frequent periods waiting for recharge
- Torpedoes have low damage and flood chance
- Completely lacks long range AAA.
Research
Researchable upgrades for Vittorio Cuniberti:
- Hull: Upgrade to Hull (B) for improved survivability, AAA, and maneuverability. Research of this module unlocks progression to IX Adriatico.
- Gun Fire Control System: Upgrade to SDT 8 mod.2 for an extra 10% range on the main battery.
- Torpedoes: Upgrade to Si 270 M2 for 2km longer range torpedoes at the cost of 20 seconds longer reload time.
Optimal Configuration
Vittorio Cuniberti should be tailored toward improving her firepower and maneuverability. Her torpedoes have more limited uses and should hold less priority than her guns.
Upgrades
The recommended upgrades are:
- Slot 1: Main Armaments Modification 1
- Slot 2: Engine Room Protection
or Engine Boost Modification 1
(if available)
- Slot 3: Aiming Systems Modification 1
- Slot 4: Propulsion Modification 1
- Slot 5: Concealment System Modification 1
Commander Skills
Vittorio Cuniberti uses a playstyle that is almost the same as the remainder of the destroyers in the Italian Tech Tree and will use a very similar build. Below is a recommended build for Vittorio Cuniberti and the Italian Tech Tree destroyers.
Consumables
Vittorio Cuniberti equips the following consumables:
- Slot 1: Damage Control Party
- Slot 2: Exhaust Smoke Generator
- 3 charges
- Slot 3: Emergency Engine Power
- 6 charges
