?{{panel title|icon=[[file:USS Fletcher icon.png|150px|left|]]|content=Small, light and unassuming, destroyers may not be the most durable of ships, but all of them are well capable of punching many times above their weight through a deadly mix of speed, maneuverability, stealth and astounding firepower. Torpedoes are their main weapon, and no one is safe from them (not even teammates). Smoke screens shield them from enemy sight, allowing them to safely close the distance in order to score better torpedo hits, or bail when the situation gets sticky. Engine Boost temporarily increases engine power by 8%, allowing them to close even faster or duck behind islands (or other ships) quickly.+

?The first destroyers were mere torpedo boats, designed to launch torpedoes at enemy fleets while protecting their own from suffering the same fates, but they lacked speed and operating range. Over time, improvements in engine design allowed them to overcome this deficiency, and naval commanders began to utilise them more often than any other type of ship due to their new-found flexibility, lower costs and ease of deployment. Traditional destroyer development reached its peak during the interwar years and in World War II with the Fubuki, Shimakaze, Fletcher and Gearing classes. After World War II, with the advent of long-range anti-surface and anti-air missile technology, along with the widespread use of helicopters, destroyers evolved to be the workhorse ship of a navy throughout the world.+

?As mentioned earlier, the main armament of destroyers are their torpedoes; their effective use is directly correlated with the effectiveness of the destroyer. Torpedoes can cripple or outright destroy any type and class of ship they encounter as long as they can hit them, and they do not reveal the destroyer's location when launched. However, unlike shells fired from guns, they have longer travel times and do not have the benefit of arcing over land masses, making well placed torpedo salvos an art form. +

?Destroyers also have 2 main abilities: Smoke Screen and Engine Boost. Smoke Screen lays down vision obscuring smoke, hiding the destroyer (and anything behind it) as long as they stay within the smokescreen, or keeping the smokescreen between them and the enemy. Smoke Screens however, also work both ways; they can hide the enemy if you let them go behind or into it as well. Engine Boost increases the engine power of the destroyer by 8%, increasing its mobility and making it even more difficult to hit (assuming the destroyer performs evasive maneuvers).+

?American, Soviet and Japanese destroyers vary wildly and play differently. While both retain excellent speed, maneuverability and stealth, American destroyers tend to have more hitpoints, possess quick-training, fast firing guns but have torpedoes with a range shorter than their detection range . Soviet destroyers tend to have slow-training but fast-firing guns along with long-range torpedoes. Japanese destroyers tend to be stealthier, possess slow-training, slower-firing guns but have longer-range torpedoes; they can strike targets beyond their detection range. As a result, American destroyers must use their speed and maneuverability to close within knife-fight range to launch their torpedoes while Japanese destroyers must use their speed and maneuverability to keep their distance to avoid close-range knife-fights with cruisers and their American counterparts. Learning the strengths and weaknesses of your vessel is essential to survival. +
