Historical context
The Queen of the Iceni led the most significant revolt in the history of Roman Britain. Roman historian Cassiu Dio described her as being fierce and striking but also 'possessing the greater intelligence that often belongs women".
Her husband King Prautagas was allied with Rome under Emeror Nero. In his will he divided between Rome and his daugthers, in a hope to maintain peace while Rome provided for his people. When Prasutagas died in 60 AD all hell broke lose, Roman soldiers began to plunder Iceni lands. Boudica resisted these actions but after she was beaten and her daughters violated, she responed by leading her people in revolt.
Boudica stormed Camulodunum breaking the defences and slaughtered it's people. General Petilus Cerealis, who commanded the Ninth Legion marched to aid the settlement but was got cut down by Boudica's troops.
Britains governor, general Suetonuin, hurried back from a campaign in Wales to put down the rebellion but was outnumbered and chose to retreat. While Boudica sacked Londinim and Verulamium, Suetonius found a site that favoured his armed and becan to wait for Boudica's forces.
When the Briton army arrived their wagons and cattle placed behind them so the none combattens would witness this glorious victory. As the Britons charged on Boudica's signal they clashed into the Roman line, but the Romans began to push forward in a wedge. When the Britons were pushed back the Roman cavalry slammed into their flanks which caused them to flee but trapped by their own wagons, the battle turned into a slaughter and the slaughter into a massacre.
Tacitus writes, "not less than 80.000 Britons were put to the sword and the Romans lost around 400 men." Boudica along side her daughters escaped the battle, killed themselve with poision rather than to be captured. The rebellion united the Britanic tribes against the oppressing Rome.
To day she is celebrated as a heorine who fought for justice and freedom for her people.
