Total War: ARENA servers are offline.

Tutorial

When you start the game, you should have seen this and it’s important for you to go through it consciously. If you’ve missed it, worry not, as you can redo it at any time by clicking on the small student hat at the bottom right of the camp screen.

PvE

Once the Tutorial is completed you will only be able to go into PvE mode. This mode is only available to units being tier 1, 2 and 3. The AI isn’t very strong and it’s very easy to defeat the AI with all your units and with a low tactical coordination between you and your teammates (none needed if you know the game well enough). Why should you go back to PvE? To level up and train new unit types and commanders. This will help you get the grip on the basis of these unit types which will help you in your future games, either playing them or against them. To go into PvE:

  • Select a commander and give him Tier 1 to 3 units (Don’t forget to add their consumables)

(It’s ALWAYS HIGHLY recommended to take all 3 units of the same tier and either 3 times the same unit type or a 2-1 unit type distribution - 2 sword infantry and 1 range/cavalry for instance).

  • Click on the arrow next to the play button in the top center part of the camp screen.
  • Click on Play vs AI.
  • Click play.

PvP

This is the main mode of Total War: ARENA where you play 10v10 with and against fellow players doing your best to work with your team to defeat the opposing army. Available once you have your first Tier 3 unit unlocked, we would recommend you wait a bit before entering here as you will be fighting players that have more experience. That being said, it’s also your first taste at the main game mode and it’s important to experience battles against real players as that’s where you’ll start having to pay attention to tactical decisions and coordinating with your teammates to get the upper hand over the enemy army. To go into PvP:

  • Select a commander and give him Tier 3 to 10 units (Don’t forget to add their consumables).

  • Click on Play vs Humans.
  • Click play.

Custom battles

These cost you 5.000 silver. Which at around Tier 3 won’t be an issue at all for you, so don’t worry about the cost. This mode is great to try out tactics, strategies or just to try out new and fun ways of playing the game. To start this mode:

  • Go to the social tab in the top left corner of your camp screen.
  • Click on Private Lobby.
  • Click on Create Game or Join Game (this doesn’t take away your silver at this stage).
  • Share the Game ID with any players you want to play with (You can have it copied to the clipboard which you can paste with the Ctrl+V keyboard keys or copy paste it directly in the chat with the 2 buttons next to the game ID on the right-hand side.
  • You can also invite a specific friend if he is in your friend list in game.
  • Both teams need at least one player.
  • All players need to click the top screen ready button.
  • The room creator can then click on the play button that replaced the ready button.
  • Once you go in game it takes the 5000 silvers from the player who created this battle only.

Please note that you can choose the game length (5, 15, 30, 45 60 minutes), the map (all maps are available not considering your tier level), players can take any tiers so ensure you have the matchup you want. Last but not least, replays are not available, but you can record and simulate a spectator mode by having one of the players taking a tier 3 Germanicus infantry player for him to go in a bottom or top corner of the map on his side and activate testudo (which reduces view range) to compensate for this. (This is used in all tournaments.)

Ranked games (Not available)

This mode has been announced by the devs and they’ve already talked a fair bit about it. It is still under development and it may change from what we’ve been told, so take the following with a grain of salt. The Ranked mode has been tested during a week-end, and here is how it was : At the moment it has been said that Rank mode will be:

  • Limited to tier 7 units only.
  • A rotation of 3 specific maps only (Passage of Augustus, Rubicon and (?))
  • No unit banned.
  • 5v5 (devs have tested 7v7 so maybe it could become 7v7?).

As more info becomes available, be sure to check this page out to update it or read the updated information.

Clan wars/battles/Clan something (Not available)

Nothing has been stated about that apart from the fact that it should, at some point happen. How, what, when, all is up for speculation and nothing else now. So, come back later for more information on this.
