Historical context

Germanicus Caesar, born 15 BC, served Rome under Augustus and Tiberius. Being an excepotinal general, eloquent speaker and charimatic leader lead him to right the wrong of the Roman massacre at the Teutoburg Forest. His father was brother of Tiberius, stepson of Augustus, son of Mark Antony's daughter but his birth name is unknown, as 'Germanicus' is honorary title given to him after the conquests in Germania.

Before he even had turned 20, Germanicus served wiht distinction under General Tiberius. At the age of 20 he became Quaestor, five years before the standard age of 25. He was allowed to skip Praetor and became a full Consul of Rome at just 27. By this time the people loved him and his men would follow him into battle without doubt.
The troops under his command revolted as Augustus died and claim Germanicus should become emperor instead of Tiberius. As his men kept on pressing him to replace Tiberius, Germanicus threatened to kill himself rather to betryal Tiberius and it made his men back down. In an effort to divert and reward them, Germanicus led a campaign to recover the lost standards of the Roman legions doing the Battle of Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD.

He defeated the Germanic tribes, where he showed no mercy, and returned to Rome triumphant with two of the three lost Eagle standards, Germanicus' constand rise in popolarity began to worry Tiberius and sent him off to control the province of Syria. Tiberius asked his friend, provincial governor Calpurnius Piso to keep an eye on Germanicus. Germanicus and Piso did not get along so Germanicus left Piso to administer the province and went to Greece and Egypt. When Germanicus returned he found Piso ruling wihtout him and officially broke ties and banished him. As Germanicus fell ill rumour spread that Piso's wife had poisoned him, his health deteriorated, and after charging his generals to avenge his murder at Piso's hand, he died in Octobter 19 AD. Piso was tried and executed for treason.

Germanicus had become a legend; he was father to Emperor Caligula, brother to Emperor Claudius and grandfather to Empereor Nero - all three loved to remind the people that they were related to the great Germanicus Caesar.
