Specifically, the mismatch in crew values caused by commander's 10% crew skill bonus. Outside of a crew of 1 commander only, 100% crew is a fiction. The client values, given for 100% crew, will normally be taken into battle with 110% crew skill members aside from specific functions, causing their actual performance to deviate from the expected client value. These differences are taken into account in tooltip boxes.

The T54E1 is an American tier 9 medium tank.

A medium tank with an oscillating turret and automatic loading. Developed on the basis of the M48 tank in the mid-50s. Two prototypes were built. However, during trials automatic loading proved faulty and the development was discontinued in 1957.

The T54E1 leads to the T57 Heavy Tank.

Player Opinion

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Great mobility, better than the T69's
  • 90mm stock gun gets a 5 round drum as opposed to the 4 rounds for the same gun in the T69 - profit!
  • 105mm gun has 4 rounds with 390 alpha each, averaging 1560 alpha in one burst - enough to kill most tier 8 tanks from full he
  • 2.22 sec reload between 105 mm rounds in magazine can be devastating to your opponents
  • Relatively cheap repair costs

Cons:

  • Huge, weak, and easily damaged turret ring
  • Poor armor
  • Ammo rack gets frequent damage
  • Top of tank easily gets penetrated by arty HE shells
  • Awful stock penetration, inadequate top penetration

Performance

When using the stock 90mm, utilize the 5 round drum to its maximum advantage - anyone not familiar with the tank will most likely assume it to be a 4 round drum (as it was in the T69). Reload time between rounds with the right consumables, modules and skills is the same ~2sec, which ties into the aim time neatly (use a Vert-Stab, GLD and the right skills to get the aim time down below the stock 2.6sec). Time to reload the drum - even with the extra round going in - is the same as the 4 round drum for the 90mm on the T69 - about 23sec with the right skills etc. This means that the 90mm gun you bring from the T69 is capable of dishing out a lot more DPM - effectively making it a significant upgrade, as opposed to a carry-over.

The real sweet stuff happens when you grind up to the 105mm for this tank. You will carry a total of 36 rounds with this gun, in loads of four this time. Again, the reload time between rounds is the same, ~2sec. Reloading takes ~33sec, which is not too bad at all. You can only run APCR (gold) or AP rounds, not HE. The aim time and accuracy for the 105mm are slightly worse than the 90mm but not terrible. You are still an effective second row tank. A flanking, lurking, spam-damage machine, and like it says above, you're pretty nimble. Think of it as an M48 Patton with an autoloader. If you've played the M48, this will make sense. Average damage with either of the 105mm rounds is the same: 390, which is not bad at all. Penetration is 255mm for the APCR, not too damn bad either.

Again though, just like the T69, you need to operate either well out of the field, out on a flank, or lurk with a couple of big boys. Never go it alone somewhere that a flanking medium can pick you up. A T-62A for example, will eat you for breakfast in a head-to-head. Sometimes you'll be heckled for not 'playing like a normal medium' - just ignore it - you're not a 'normal medium' at all.

One thing that you might consider, if you have some pals with the same tank, is to mass-platoon three of them and stagger-fire, covering each other on the magazine reloads. The amount of metal coming out of a platoon of three that works closely together is insane, and you can certainly go it alone in this instance. Arty will be all over you like a rash though, so keep mobile, use that agility well and listen to that sweet sound of three 105mm cannons firing in rapid succession.

Early Research

  • The AN/GRC-7 radio carries over from the T71 (not the T69) and should be installed immediately.
  • The Continental AV-1790-3 engine carries over from the T29 if you played it previously.
  • The Continental AV-1790-5B engine can be used if the M103 is unlocked.
  • The AN/GRC-7 radio transfers over if you have the M103 elited.

Historical Info

The T54 was a series of prototype American tanks of the 1950s with three different turrets, all armed with a 105mm gun, mounted on the M48 Patton chassis. The original T54 had a conventional turret with an autoloader, while the turret on T54E1 was of an oscillating design with an autoloader and the one on T54E2 was conventional with a human loader. The turret on T54E1 was similar to that of the T69 in its oscillating design and in that it held a crew of three and a nine-round drum autoloader under the gun. The T54E1 was abandoned in 1956 and in 1957 the entire project was cancelled in favor of the T95
