The <value_unset_error> is a [[|]] tier .
<value_unset_error>
It has excellent armor for its tier and the sloped turret is effective in causing shots to bounce. Like early French low tier tanks, it is very slow and has poor turning characteristics. The upgraded engine only adds 10 additional horsepower and does little to mitigate the problem.
It starts with the 37 mm SA38 which has decent penetration but poor accuracy. It can be upgraded to the 47mm SA34 short barrel which offers worse penetration and accuracy for a small increase in damage. It it best to upgrade the gun to the high penetration 25mm cannon or spend experience on the 47mm SA35 as it's an essential module in the AMX 40 tree.
The <value_unset_error> marks the end of its line.

Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Very well armored
- Oddly shaped turret will confuse people on where to fire
- Has a reduced chance of engine fire
Cons:
- Very slow
- HP/ton is abysmal - Climbing hills and traversing obstacles are a real challenge
- Almost completely useless in any other battle than Tier 3
- Below average view and signal range - Despite being a "light" tank
- Premium Ammunition on the 47mm SA35 does little to offset the poor performance of the gun
Performance
The AMX 38 performs almost exactly like its child, the AMX 40. Slow and lumbering with a decent amount of armor and halfway decent firepower, the AMX 38 can, given the right team, or depending upon where you are in the list, give you the feeling that you're playing a heavy. If you're at the top, play like a heavy, as your armor can take the hits as a general rule, and most tanks below you will most assuredly bounce their shots. Take care if you're at the bottom and you've got some tier 5's in the battle with you, a Churchill will eat you alive. Beware of attacking in uneven terrain though, as the poor gun depression may hinder your ability to hit a target.
As a Tier 3 tank the AMX 38 is superior to the AMX 40 in nearly every way, simply because you won't get into the tier 6 matches that the AMX 40 gets into. In that regard the AMX 38 won't be nearly as ineffective or a pain to play as the AMX 40. In most regards though they play very much alike, with minor upgrades to HP, armor, and armament.
Early Research
- The 25 mm Canon Raccourci Mle. 1934 Gun and ER 53 Radio carry over from the Hotchkiss H35. However, only the radio can be mounted immediately.
- First research the AMX 38 série Suspension.
- Depending on whether you want more firepower or more speed, research either the 47 mm SA34 Gun, followed by the 47 mm SA35 Gun, or the Aster M Engine. Since the top engine only has 10 more horsepower than the stock, it is probably better to research the guns first.

Historical Info
The tank had a crew of two, a tank commander / gunner / radioman and a driver.
It can be estimated, the tank had a design weight of 18 tons. So in fact, it would be more a medium tank then a true light tank.
The dimensions are, length: 5280 mm Overall width: 1930 mm Overall height: 2227 mm (box height: 1427 mm).
Apart from the top turret (as FCM), it has a modern form (i.e. like a Pz III). It is characterized by a flat plate hull, probably screwed as was the D2. Only the front was molded/welded. The base has a prismatic shape characteristic. The tank is armed with a 47 SA 35 turret (37 SA 38 on the first prototype). Some designs include a 37 SA 18 turret. The turret is molded and mounted in the center axis on double ball path. It looks like the turret Batignolles studied for the Light Infantry Tank.
The tracks and suspensions are technical AMX (Engineer Molina) very similar to those of R 40: many small road wheels, vertical pendulum springs. Each train has 16 four-wheel drive and support rollers. The wheels are protected by a metal sheet, similar as the D2.
Although the drawings where ready, the tank was not manufactured in series.
