?This tank destroyer is another great example of the french "glass-cannon" concept tanks. Whilst it has possibly the best gun among tier 7 tank destroyers (even surpassing some tier 8 heavy tanks) its side and rear armor are so thin that most HE shells will be able to fully penetrate and thus deal heavy HP and crew/module damage. Also, even though the front armor is 120mm thick, it is angled far less than the Jagdpanther's and on top of that the AMX AC Mle.1946 has two massive weak spots that can easily be hit from the front side - the commander's copula and the range finder.+The AMX AC mle. 1946 is arguably the first French tank destroyer to feature a decent level of protection. With decently well-sloped 120 mm frontal plates, it can and will bounce a surprising number of shots. It is also unique among the French tank destroyers with its outstanding 10 degrees of gun depression, highly beneficial when fighting on uneven terrain. However, like the preceding ARL V39, these two features are ruined by the large and relatively thinly armored machine-gun turret and stereoscopic rangefinder mounted on top of the superstructure. These weakspots are fairly easy to hit, and can allow enemy tanks to hit the AC 46 before it can bring its gun to bear. This weakness is shared by all French tank destroyers after the AC 46, and it is important to get used to it. While the frontal armor is decent, from any other angle the AC 46 is exceedingly poorly protected, with a maximum thickness of only 40 mm on the sides and rear, and an atrocious 20 mm on the roof. Artillery is extremely dangerous and will one-shot the AC 46 if it scores a direct hit on anywhere but the front with high explosive shells.
?It is however highly maneuverable and fast for being a tank destroyer. Able to hit up to 50km/h (low-40s on flat ground) this tank destroyer can easily relocate if spotted and can quickly re-position to support certain weak points in the battle line.+

?The AMX AC Mle.46 also has fantastic gun depression at -10 degrees. While this is definitely a boon, especially compared to the other TD's in the French TD tree, be careful when cresting over hills to fire, as your commander's cupola and rangefinder are large weakspots, and your enemies will hit them before you can fire back.+There are two viable guns on the AC 46. The 90 mm DCA 45 is first encountered on the ARL V39, and receives much better soft statistics on the AC 46, especially in terms of aim time and dispersion. With 212 mm of penetration, it still far outclasses most other tank destroyer guns at Tier 7 in that area, although its damage-per-shot is now mediocre for that tier. It fires relatively fast to make up for this. The 100 mm SA 47 features outstanding penetration at 232 mm, the best in its tier, along with acceptable damage-per-shot. However, it is marred by the very poor aim time, gun dispersion, as well as an awful base damage-per-minute (DPM) of only around 1800 (the DCA 45 can achieve over 2000). These problems can be exacerbated by the very poor gun traverse angles of the AC 46, a problem also shared by the ARL V39. Both guns have fairly good base accuracy. The 90 mm DCA 30 is simply unacceptable at Tier 7, and should never be considered for use, especially since the DCA 45 can be unlocked on the preceding ARL V39.
 +
+The AC 46, being based on the faster variant of the AMX M 4 mle. 1945, has a fairly good power/weight ratio thanks to its powerful engine, and will easily do above 40 km/h on flat terrain. It accelerates quite well and can easily shift across the battlefield. Unfortunately, because of its poor terrain resistance values and hull traverse speeds, it does not turn as well as one would expect, and light or medium tanks can outmaneuver it fairly easily.
 +
+Due to a combination of poor armor beyond the frontal aspect, poor turning ability, large size, poor DPM, and awful gun traverse angles, the AC 46 does not tend to fare well in close combat situations and tends to work better from a more stand-off distance where it is harder to hit the weakspots, and its excellent gun penetration and good accuracy can be best used and the poor gun traverse and dispersion are less relevant.

AMX AC mle. 46

VII

AnnoF35_AMX_AC_Mle1946.png

1350000

The AMX AC mle. 46 is a French tier 7 tank destroyer.

Proposed plan for a heavy tank destroyer on the basis of the M4. Development was started in 1946. The configuration of the vehicle had a strong resemblance to the Jagdpanther. Existed only in blueprints.

After the previously fragile vehicles in the French tank destroyer branch, players may feel a slight relief upon acquiring this tank. With decent frontal armor, a fairly good gun selection, and high mobility, the AMX AC mle. 1946 provides a first glimpse at what to expect from the rest of the tank destroyer line.

The AMX AC mle. 46 leads to the AMX AC mle. 48.

Player Opinion

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Decently sloped frontal armor up to 120 mm thick
  • High speed and acceleration
  • Good gun selection, with some of the highest penetration guns of its class and tier
  • Great gun depression

Cons:

  • Poor gun placement, with narrow gun traverse angles
  • Subpar view range
  • Extremely thin side & rear armor
  • Poor hull traverse speed
  • Large size with poor camouflage rating

Performance

The AMX AC mle.

There are two viable guns on the AC 46.

The AC 46, being based on the faster variant of the AMX M 4 mle.

Due to a combination of poor armor beyond the frontal aspect, poor turning ability, large size, poor DPM, and awful gun traverse angles, the AC 46 does not tend to fare well in close combat situations and tends to work better from a more stand-off distance where it is harder to hit the weakspots, and its excellent gun penetration and good accuracy can be best used and the poor gun traverse and dispersion are less relevant.

Early Research

  • The stock suspension is sufficient to hold all module upgrades and equipment, so players should equip the 90 mm AC DCA 45 and upgraded radio.
  • Research the 2nd and 3rd engine next. The additional power will make it a lot more nimble. If you have already played the ARL 44 the second engine is already available, while the third engine is also on the AMX M4 mle. 45.
  • Then grind the 100 mm, as it is also used on the AMX AC mle. 1948.
  • Lastly, the suspension should be upgraded for the increased traverse speed and better hull movement gun dispersion values.
